What is the role of a management consulting firm and do businesses need them?
J

Updated on Last month

The co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios Ed Catmull once quoted-

---“ It is not the manager’s job to prevent risks. It is the manager’s job to make it safe to take them.”

The management consulting firm does something similar for million-dollar companies. They pull out the companies stuck in the quicksand of wrong decisions and prompt them to undertake business risks.

During the operation, the consultancy firm wears many hats to provide robust business solutions to its clients. They solve the most complex problems of the organization, including how to launch the product? How to optimize company revenue? Or how to market the product sidelining a strong competitor?

Whether you are working for a management consulting firm or operating individually, it is one of the highest-paid jobs in the world, but it comes with the price. It demands lots of hard work, traveling, burning mid-night oil et al.

Some famous management consulting firms you may have heard about would be McKinsey & Company, Accenture, Deloitte & Touche, Gartner, etc. Their demand is on the rise with the management consulting industry, growing 3.6% to revenues of $241 billion for more than 708,000 firms in the last five years in the U.S alone. So what exactly they do?

Role of management consulting firm

Management consultancy firms’ services span over a broad area. It offers services across all business operations – from HR and marketing to IT and finance. They train staff to solve the most rigid problems, devise invaluable strategies, and improve the financial and operational health of their clients’ organizations.

The role of the consultant may vary depending on their experience and position. As a junior consultant, particularly at big-league firms, you may be part of a team advising businesses that are already doing well.

Management Consulting Operation Areas

The management consulting services address issues of the organization and as we had mentioned earlier, and it spans across various domains.

Like many domains, the consultant has different roles to perform. Here are a few examples.

Why organization need business consulting firms

  • When a client wants a third party opinion and has to take a critical decision
  • When they want a temporary workforce that is efficient and experienced. It helps them to save time and money to hire a full-time expert.
  • When they need Subject Matter Expert, for instance, knowing the Lean Six Sigma process design to finance organization structures.
  • Since they have worked with many firms, they can bring in experience from a variety of companies
  • Consultancy firms show readiness to teach new clients about areas they need to stay competitive

Do businesses need Management consultancy firms?

Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, one of the most valuable companies in the world, goes to great lengths to stop his company from using consultants.

There is a common notion about hiring Management consultancy firms, and few people think it is unnecessary to hire them when the organization has a team of experienced CEOs, executives, and stakeholders for business transformation.

Some even argue that consultants know little or nothing about their clients’ companies, and merely dish out information their clients already have. If you are hiring expensive corporate executives just for knowledge transfer, then remember there are cheaper sources available to fill the void. There is no need to spend a hefty amount.

Besides that, as many as 80 percents of new consulting firms fail during the first two years, there is always a risk of hiring a wrong consultancy firm. It can bring double loss; you may lose huge money on hiring the firm and bear the extra loss with the business problem yet not resolved.

There is also a group of business owners who think consultancy firms work as a shield for managers. They can escape any form of responsibility. They can blame consultants if things go wrong and accept praise for hiring them if things work out.

Another major issue on the hiring management consultant is the ego clash. Senior executives may not co-operate with the consultancy firm and may try to sabotage their views or ideas. To gain effective results from the consultancy firm, it is necessary to fix the internal conflict.

There is a lot of disparity over hiring management consultancy firms. The old school relies on its internal resource while modern-day entrepreneurs envisage consultancy firm as the savior. There is a chance to get an advantage from hiring management consultancy if a business owner knows the knowledge and guidance they are seeking from the consulting firm is a good value for money. This comes by selecting the best management consultancy firm.

How to select the best Management consultancy firms

This is a difficult question to answer when you have an overwhelming list of Management consultancy firms. A correct choice, in the beginning, means a positive result in the end. These are a few tips which could help to find the best management consultancy firms.

  1. Check their work history: Always ask about who they have worked with and how successful the project was. If required, contact past clients with their consent.
  2. Evaluate the legal clause: Diligently evaluate the legal formalities, rules, and quality of the service before signing any agreement
  3. Consider experience over money: An inexperienced consultant who is cheaper but takes a longer time to reach your goal may be more costly than an experienced consultant
  4. Add value: Having the same people with the same skills might not help to grow business or find a solution. Always hire a consulting firm that has provided services in various fields and has resourced people with a myriad of skills
  5. Analyze Government records: Do not merely rely on the Google search data; some might have posted false information. Most government has official legal records and other references about legally registered consulting firms. Use them.
  6. Check reviews and ratings: There are excellent online review sites that list companies based on users genuine remarks, public opinion and service rendered

If you are seriously thinking to triumph another business milestone, then bring on board some best talent from the top management consulting firms.

Which is best team messaging app for a software development firm?
ProfileImage

Updated on 3 weeks ago

I am a big fan of Slack since the day 1. I have been using Slack from past 3 years and there's never a dull moment with it. With Slack app on the phone it is like I am conveniently carrying my entire workspace with me where I go, making my life so much easy.

I can stay in touch with my team, check my tasks, update my tasks, discuss on them or even collaborate with my google docs and finish small tasks like editing all from one app and that too while I am on the go.

Also, i love using other features like channels, threads and espcially its reminder feature. I simply set a reminder and the Slackbot will remind me or anybody from my team whom I have tagged to do a particular thing/task on a stipulated date and time. Isn't that awesome!

You can upload documents, pictures and videos as well on it, making it easier for the team to communicate with different media files as well.

So I guess it is certainly a great messaging app to use for software development companies whether big or small.
