Argentics Executive Interview

Alexander Khodorkovsky
CEO
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
Argentics is an AAA Game Development company. We can handle all the production pipeline stages of A to Z to develop games of any complexity for all major platforms. As the CEO I’m responsible for keeping the highest quality of our services and products. This includes making sure that we have the right experts on board, and that the company atmosphere helps everyone in the team to unfold his/her potential.
What is the story behind starting this company?
Good games were my childhood passion that evolved into a curiosity to understand what a good and addictive game is and how to make one. My interest in game development was accompanied by attempts to make games, and meet like-minded people to share experiences. All this led to an aspiration to develop outstanding games.

Argentics is a mix of strong desire and being lucky to meet and gather the right and professional teammates with the right values and create an atmosphere that would help everybody to work effectively. After all, Argentics is a strong team of amazing people who love games and praise high quality.
What is your company’s business model in-house team or third-party vendors/ outsourcing?
We provide end-to-end game development services that are based on a 100% in-house team.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
We rely on seasoned crew members who have solid hands-on experience creating games of various genres. With all the cool art and development ninjas on board, our production pipeline has proven to be effective across numerous projects. We expect those willing to join our friendly ranks to have a solid professional track record and share our values. Our team strives for perfectionism at all production levels to offer the best to our Clients. Having the right chemistry between all teammates has always been the cornerstone of our highly efficient and stable production.

Now, there is another thing. To be at most helpful to our Clients we adhere to a proactive approach at all stages: from inception through game design, concept art, game mechanics to monetization.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We believe that game technologies come in handy across multiple industries: marketing, education, and medicine. Our team built a few products for Clients from the mentioned domains.

Over the last few years, we decided to focus on Game Development, and now 100% of our clients are game development companies.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
We offer various services, from game design creation to concept art and modeling, through development and eventual post-release support. As of the present, our team is mostly focused on end-to-end game development services.

Also, we are eager to help when our Clients need a hand with big pieces of complex artwork.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
We've been able to ensure a high satisfaction rate by relying on our experience and industry best practices. The quality inception phase is fundamental to understanding the Client’s needs and hence to the success of the entire project. Once we get on the same page with our Clients with respect to key needs and requirements, we build an effective communication pipeline.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
The very nature of the projects we work on implies tight cooperation with our clients on a regular basis. It’s safe to say that our teams get intertwined in a way. We keep in touch simultaneously using multiple tools ranging from email and chats to repositories and kanban charts.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
Normally we work on Pay per Milestone terms on a monthly basis.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We understand that we can serve our best only when our team handles a project end-to-end. Our secret is in the synergy of different departments that allows us to achieve the best outcome. So it’s more about the project that we get and chemistry with a Client and less about the budget.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2021?
We are open for mid and large-scale projects. It’s really more about chemistry with Clients and projects than about specific budget caps.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
We believe we will be one of the world's most famous game development companies.

About

Graviton Zero is a multiplayer game that offers its players the role of spaceship captains in a vast sci-fi universe controlled by two rivaling factions. Build up your own planetary base, customize your vessel, engage in fights and trade and move up the ranks to help lead your race to victory!

Game Design

Given the scale of the game universe and complexity of its core mechanics, creating a comprehensive game design document followed by an elaborate Game Architecture were the logical first steps. It was important to focus on minimalistic MVP features while keeping the bigger picture in mind - both not to overextend the budget but to also implement the most critical features. Additionally we planned integration of smart contracts.

Concept Art

Two game factions with a number of ship classes, each with distinctive design and a variety of guns, all required solid concept artwork. It was important to convey the vibes of each of the two rivaling space races in every element of their spacecrafts. So over a rather short period of time we focused our Art Team efforts on producing a comprehensive moodboard followed by a number of quality sketches of several battleships.

Once the above had been done, we moved to conceptualizing pilots, cockpits, interreplacable weapon modules, space stations and core elements of combat UI.

3D Modeling

Great attention to details is what helps to build tight bounds between a player and their ship. Every spacecraft model and respective cockpit elements were designed to tell a story, pretty much as all the weapons for each of the two factions. Also, it was of great importance to build a universal pipeline to produce optimized assets.

In addition to vessels, both compact private bases and public colossal space stations were important elements of the story. Working theri interiors and exteriors from scratch was an equally enjoyable experience for our artists.

About

TryHards is an action driven top-down MOBA set in a sci-fi world where four factions fight for dominance. As the team that developed TryHards from scratch, we put our best efforts to make the game a colorful and engaging experience for its players.

Game Design

Solid game design lays the foundation for quality gameplay. We followed the Client’s narrative to flash out a comprehensive Game Design Document elaborating on game mechanics, visual references and much more.

Concept Art

A game with a top-down perspective requires a specific approach to character and environment concept design. Our team conceptualized 20 heroes and many elements of the combat arena and the social hub.

3D Modeling

Catchy 3D characters and environment greatly contribute to engaging game experience. We modeled all the game 3D assets to convey its storytelling in the most visually appealing manner.

Animations

The majority of 20 in-game characters required custom movement animations each. In particular, we paid great attention to non-humanoid characters with unique behavior.

Development

Argentics handled end-to-end front and backend-development for TryHards. We started with completing a comprehensive Game Architecture Document based on our hands-on experience in building multiplayer titles. Based on it, the team made a playable Demo and eventually the MVP with a custom server solution. Also, we handled end-to-end game integration with respective NFT smart contracts.

The project has been tested internally and with the community to collect invaluable gameplay feedback.

Description

Lost in Random is a stylized game title inspired by Alice in the Wonderland. Our team of Concept and 3D artists developed some of key chracters and elements of the environment for this game.

Challenge

It takes time to find a team of seasoned artists that can deliver prime quality game assets on within a tight time frame. The studio behind Lost in Random needed a hand with some key pieces of game art.

Solution

Our Art Lead and a few more Artists loved the original game concept art and its vibe. In a matter of a week we ramped up the dedicated team of just the right 3D modellers who started working on the task.

Impact

After almost a year of work we delivered a number of key characters and quite a number of elements of the environment. The game is praised for its cool visuals and dark fairy atmoshpere.

Description

This is an app with quite a number of AR experiences: a realistic model of a cow chewing grass, a 3D dairy town etc. Also it contains a runner mini game. It was designed and developed from scratch by us for a big national Dairy brand.

Challenge

A national Dairy brand wanted to increase customer engagement and loyalty by developing a gamified application. A single AR animation or a game were not enough.

Solutions

To ensure rich and memorable AR experience our team came up with the following ideas:

  • we decided to created several quarters of a cartoony Dairy town
  • our designers worked a lot on a realistic model of a cow that user could project on a floor or a table
  • we also made the cow a part of a funny and colourful runner game

Impact

The app received positive user reviews and will be shown on several creative ads contests:

Description

“M.A.D. Cliff - All Quiet On The Bridge” is a VR exclusive first person fantasy shooter. Filled with impressive special effects and exciting game tracks. Also its AI can learn to craft items by tracking Player's hands. The title won an award at an immersive games exhibition.

Challenges

We wanted to design and develop a game for several VR devices to demonstrate the abilities of Unity 3D Engine. This project was not being viewed as a commercial one. So we had to deal with a limited budget and yet ensure cool user experience.

Solutions

Fighting off waves of incoming enemies was just the right solution from a level design perspective. We were able to create a grim fantasy environment without having to design a huge map with too many elements of the environment. Which allowed us to focus on quality talking into account budget restrictions.

Impact

The game won an award at an Immersive Gaming exhibition. When we have some free in-house resources, we will re-design the game to make it a commercial success.

Description

FreeKick is a soccer game with realistic motion-capturing powered animations and over 5M downloads.

Challenge

Our team had to add some new flavour to the next game of the successful series. Creating a few new models of soccer icons would not bring much new to the table. And so our team decided to focus on realist animations.

Solution

There was only one good way to go - to record motions of real soccer players. This was what we actually did to ensure the next level experience. Also since Argentics worked on quite a number of sports games, it was relatively easy for us to add more characters to the roster.

Impact

The game well deserved over 5M downloads. Now we are working on the ball physics to make the application polished.

Description

Farming Simulator 20 is another game of the successful mobile series. Our team designed and animated all the assets for this and a few previous titles. The application has positive reviews on Google Play.

Challenge

To create a great successor for Farming Simulator 19,  the Client needed even better models of vehicles and the environment - all optimized for mobile devices. Our team had to show superior results to satisfy a demanding fanbase.

Solution

We had hands-on experience creating similar vehicles for this very game series. So Argetics’ 3D team did not have to dive deep into research and concepting. Instead we leveraged our know-how from the previous projects for the same Client. Also we hired a couple new Art Leds, which helped to speed up the process even more.

Impact

The game received positive reviews from its solid fan base.
