Cleveroad Executive Interview

Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
I’m the founder and CEO of Cleveroad, a full-stack web, and mobile development company. For the past 5 years, we have successfully dealt with startups, B2B businesses and enterprise projects. Mobile apps created by our developers are based on iOS, Android and Windows Phone platforms. The services we offer are marketing research, planning, wireframing, UI/UX design, MVP creation, testing, release and post-release support. At the time when I got an idea of starting a tech company, the interest to technologies in Ukraine was at a fast-growing stage. We saw appearing new IT outsourcing companies almost monthly -- small with poor management and unfortunately poor results. I thought that could unite the best minds around me, who were working as freelancers and jointly concentrate on the quality of products that we delivered. Steadily, we developed from a start-up into a fully-fledged development company.
What is your company’s business model–in-house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
Cleveroad adheres to the in-house business model. Our team consists of experienced developers, QA engineer, project managers, and business analysts, so we do not outsource any of our projects or tasks related to the project.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
We try to add value to any project we undertake. To deliver high-quality products, you have to be agile. So we build products iteratively, conducting daily and weekly meetings. During development, we focus on project management and ensure the level of flexibility our customer requires. Also, we provide transparent pricing models and secure approach to product delivery.

We're following DevOps practices that allow us to automate build, test and deploy processes. This usually results in development cost reduction as we detect the issues during the early stages, deploy faster, and eliminate many tasks connected with the release process.
What industries do you generally cater to?
We provide custom web solutions for different areas of business including e-commerce, healthcare, real estate, etc. Websites can be developed from scratch or be CMS-based, depending on our customers’ requirements.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app
It usually depends on the number of screens in an app and complexity of required functionality. That’s normally it. When it comes to estimating of budget and an approximate timeline for the project, we carefully study any given case. The estimation process is divided into two parts: rough and detailed estimate and is absolutely free.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile application?
Creating front end and back end of any product depends on various factors. The main requirements for front end delivery are user-friendliness; which we achieve combining UI and UX smartly, and the client’s satisfaction. We understand that our clients have their vision on the product and try to meet it. As for back-end creation, it depends on the required functionality.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
Before taking a final decision and recommending our customers to develop for iOS or Android, unless our customer has a firm requirement to create for the particular platform, we weigh all the factors. We consider the geographical factor, industry, competition, user audience, price discrepancy (iOS development is usually 10-20% cheaper) and so on.
Which platform do you suggest your clients, to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
Again, it depends on certain factors. I would suggest starting with iOS app development considering the price and audience. Choosing Android app development, one should take into account the device and OS fragmentation, which adds up to the development costs. However, Android is more friendly for using third-party software and user audience is far bigger than iOS’s one. If you plan to monetize your app, iOS is a better option as its holders are more purchase-friendly.
These are very general facts to consider. Every single project is unique, that’s why we conduct deep research to help customers make the right choice. Anyway, to cover more potential users it’s worth considering creating apps for both platforms, taking into account that development for the second platform is always 10% faster.
Which platform (Native or Hybrid) is best to use to build an app? What are your recommendations?
We would definitely recommend a native platform. We don’t think it’s a good idea to compromise on user experience, expandability, and quality. If the customer wants to deliver the app to market in less than 6 months, then developing the hybrid app is the best alternative. We recommend native apps development for those apps that can’t compromise security and performance, need to have an offline mode and use OS specific functions (think camera, GPS, address book), in addition, then they have nothing to do but to develop a native app.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application
Generally, the only factors to influence the cost of mobile app development are size and complexity of the project. The larger the project is, the more resources are to be allocated. As for the other significant factors, time frames matter -- if our customer wants the project to be delivered faster, it requires more resources. Developing apps for both, iOS and Android, platforms double the cost. Next, what kind of services will be provided (design, DevOps, support devices, etc) also influence the cost. All these factors are carefully analyzed and appropriately estimated so that our customers could receive the fair price for the service.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients?
We tend to follow Fixed price model. The reason why we choose fixed price model is to ensure that our customers get their product within budget. They understand exactly how much and what they are paying for. Moreover, since the development team gets paid for the actual result rather than for hours spent in the office, they do their best to implement a quality product within the time period allowed.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement?
We don’t have the minimum budget requirement.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2016?
The projects were of different size and, therefore, of different price — from a few thousand dollars to more than 150 thousand.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
It depends on the type of app. At Cleveroad, we have specialists who can help set up a working monetization and app promotion strategy that will generate revenue. Speaking in general, we don’t recommend our customers charge for downloads. Depending on the app, in-app purchase or in-app advertising can bring more beneficial results.

We’ve chosen these fonts because they are clean and traditional. Several tracings of these fonts were used.

The design used the system of widgets, which allows interesting posts, useful information and articles to fit harmoniously into the structure.

After analyzing the websites of competitors, we have identified their strengths and weaknesses and created a prototype. During the prototyping, we have worked out dozens of options for the content location and have chosen the best.

This dynamic unit is in the form of widgets and displays interesting information for the user.

After a lot of work, we finally came to the design stage.

Consumer Products

Great service, especially if it specializes in branding for ecommerce, needs great design. So here is the redesigned website of the one, which enables its users to print logo or any other graphics on the customers’ products. The challenge was to meet the main UX requirement: as price depends on complexity – users first choose the product and upload their graphics, and after that, request the price. I think, we did it.

MAIN PAGE SOLUTIONS

The main page shows an interaction model with the website UI for unregistered users. "Shop now" button allows users to reach the desired category or product directly from the main page. Each category is illustrated with a specially designed icon. The top bar of the main page enables users to move to a catalog, search for the desired item or create an account. One more way to interact with the site is to move down the scrollable web page. Great user experience is proved by simple and pleasant transitions and intuitive interface.

MOBILE ADAPTATION

Now we’re close to creating a mobile application and our goal is to realise navigation through categories in a tap bar. It’s already in process and very soon we’ll share our GitHub project. The idea is to create neverending scroll which allows quick, free and fun switching between categories, which are veryvery important for our customer.

Review Summary

Cleveroad was a pleasure to work with on our project. We are a small company that provides services for medical device manufacturers. The software project with Cleveroad was an application that helps our customers manage their documentation.

Our company does not have any expertise in Software Development. Therefore, we relied completely on the expertise of the Cleveroad team - which we do not regret!

Cleveroad helped us efficiently define the MVP for the project at the very beginning. The Cleveroad team then worked to bring those plans to life. Both the planning and execution of the project were done on time and on budget. The team also spent a great deal of time understanding the "ins and outs" of our project and suggested many features that improved the overall usability of the application.

In the end, we are incredibly satisfied with the work Cleveroad did on our project and would happily work with them again on future projects.

What service was provided as part of the project?

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

Their design work is the most impressive thing about them. I was able to see a live product that Cleveroad built for my friend, and it impressed me. I was impressed again when I saw that they were designing and implementing my idea as I wanted it. I don’t know how strong they are in terms of coding, but I’ve appreciated their design, as have other people.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

We’ve had some misunderstandings around the tracked development hours. For example, they’ve told me that they spent 35 hours developing a feature, but I later found out that it took 40 hours. This was not a big problem, and we’re still working within our development timeframes, but time tracking could be improved.

Review Summary

Our company was founded in 2011, we sell Metal roof PV, Solar PV Mounting, Shingle Roof Flashing and PV Racking. Our website was out of date and it became harder to sell anything because customers saw our poor site and thought that our roofs were in the same poor condition. That is why we decided not only to redesign it but also add new screens and some new features. We needed to redesign our site and add there new functionality. We were looking for a reliable vendor and the first thing we checked was the feedback from customers of a company. Cleveroad has lots of happy customers that is why we chose the guys. Our website is build on Squarespace CMS and JQuery library, we didn’t want to change them but we needed it to look better than it did. We were provided by a team of Cleveroad specialists: 2 backend developers, 2 UI/UX designers, 1 project manager, 1 QA engineer. It took us almost 5 month to make the site look the way we liked it and the cost was $25.000.
Ss a Business Development Manager I can say that our sales have increased since we launched our rebuilt website. Our customers now see that the products we sell are with the best quality. They have more information on the site and can easily find it there. With the new product catalog they can see the wide range of all goods we sell. I liked the punctuality we started our meetings, I appreciate that.

Review Summary

My name is Bruno Lecar. I am a founder of a startup company from Portugal. I wanted to develop an event app, so the main challenge was to implement the detection of events. One more task was to build a feature that allows users finding events near them based on their location. I asked Cleveroad to build me an app for iOS and Android, as well as a design for them since I had nothing except for idea.

I was browsing your site and looking for trustworthy companies which could build apps for me. Before Cleveroad, I've contacted three different companies but their prices were over my budget. Later, I found Cleveroad and contacted them. Their conditions were satisfactory if compared to other firms.

The project duration was about 5 months. However, apps are still in testing, so it may take a little more time.

It will take some time until I get the final version of my apps. However, I can single out the company's design department that did a really great job. Apps look fresh and eye-catching.

This company has good value for money.

I’m satisfied with the cooperation with Cleveroad but I think they should work on their estimates since in my case there is some extra time they require in order to finish the development.

The way how I was greeted in Cleveroad was beyond praise: nice and professional team that encourages open and trustful communication, that was exactly what I was looking for. Beside the development, I ordered design in Cleveroad that was aligned with our corporate colors. We started the project in November (2016) and in the end of May they helped me with launching. Additionally, they suggested me the initial SEO optimization services and I suppose I’m going to take their offer. Taking into account the tight budget and schedule, we’ve done great job together. I suppose that was because of our experience in real estate sphere: mine in business (more than 4 years) and theirs in building similar projects. We had a small delay in development due to the holiday season in Ukraine which I was notified about in advance. However, this didn’t prevent us from finishing the project in time. They have done everything in time. In the middle of June I’ve already had my website hosted on the local host. BTW, now we are negotiating with Cleveroad because we want to update the website adding some new features, and website is suspended for now. All my team is looking forward to get results already, and I can say we are satisfied with the work Cleveroad does.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Nothing as such.

Review Summary

Virgin Atlantic is one of the leading airlines in the UK. With the main office in Crawley, England, and three operating bases, it has more than 9,000 people on staff. The company is interested in getting its operations as much automated and optimized as possible. During the cooperation with Cleveroad, I was working as an IT Project Manager at Virgin Atlantic. I was dealing with inner projects, aimed at optimizing a variety of organizational issues. The scope of my major responsibilities included creating and maintaining project management procedures. In other words, to ensure that projects are developed and implemented according to approved business requirements. As the number of employees is rather vast in Virgin Atlantic, HR department faced the problem managing them all. They were overloaded with calculations of working and sick days. HRs did it manually using some simple solutions like Excel, of course it wasn't effective, took much time and efforts. Eventually they came up with an idea to automate the process. They contacted to me and we defined main functionality for the new system. We needed an app for IOS and Android where our workers could login (only via the app), app should calculate the amount of working days monthly, it should also notify about some urgent news in the company, contain entrance badge - a QR code, spot the location of the worker and time you are working from the moment you logged in. We also needed a web admin panel for HR managers, where they can see the statistics. My team wasn't able to solve this task and we decided to find an outside vendor. As the initiator was HR department, we were budget limited, so it was impossible to engage our usual contractors. We decided that it should be a foreign middle sized company. I made a research on the Internet and found Cleveroad, their site seemed to me rather neat and informative, especially I liked the blog and portfolio. I filled the form and their sales manager contacted me. It was easy to check their skills and knowledge as I have been working in this field a lot. The crucial points were time, money and quality, of course. And after short negotiations we signed the contract. The strategy was defined by our team and we had strict guidelines to the design as we needed it to follow our corporate style, however we didn't have designers in our company, so Cleveroad was responsible for this and everything else. I was a manager on the project, so it was easy to control the whole process, to tell you the truth we had to change the design a few times so in the end it fit perfectly the concept of our company. We started in February with the documentation, in a few weeks we got all the materials and started the development. So the whole duration was almost 7 months. We finished IOS version of the app a little bit earlier and decided that the best test is a test in real life, so our workers started using it even earlier than we planned in the first place. Android was finished in 10 days, so it didn't make much difference. We launched our app in August 2016 and it still works perfectly.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

<p>I really liked to work with the guys, because of the punctuality despite the difference between timezones. We worked side by side and it wasn&#39;t difficult for me to communicate with their team.</p>

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

<p>We had a few small bugs but, basically, we fixed it easily, our HR managers liked the Admin panel, they didn&rsquo;t have to do everything manually any more.</p>
