Codal Executive Interview

Keval Baxi
Keval Baxi
CEO
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
We are Codal, a UX design and software engineering agency based in Chicago. Our clientele has ranged from small businesses to leading enterprise organizations, but our philosophy remains the same: to empower brand visibility and deliver the most robust and elegant web and mobile solutions possible. Some of our specialties include UX & UI design, custom app development, B2B web applications, dashboard development, customer experience, eCommerce, migrations, enterprise integrations, and conversion optimization.

As the CEO, I am in charge of the day-to-day operations, helping our clients generate millions of dollars in business growth. As one of Codal’s expert technologists, I also consult on the solution architecture on some of our larger or more complex projects.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
Before I started Codal, I was working as a Consultant. During this time, I saw so many inefficiencies in the ways these agencies handled tasks, projects, and processes. I wanted to start my own agency where the client comes first and where customer service is the top priority. I thought that I could develop a much more effective way to deliver projects on time, in scope and on a budget, so I started Codal.
What are your company’s business model – in-house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We do not outsource any of our work to other vendors. While we have two offshore offices in the UK and India. These offices are Codal-owned and are not run by a third party. It is important for us to have all of our client’s work be completed by a full-time Codal employee to ensure the highest possible quality.
How is your business model beneficial from a value-added perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
When you have a full-in house team, the team gains experience from the projects they complete and can then leverage that expertise during future projects. When companies outsource their work to third-party vendors, they don’t know that individual’s experience or expertise, and may not be fully committed and dedicated like a full-time employee would.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We cater to all industries, but we have been giving a lot of services in fields like eCommerce, healthcare, manufacturing, and finance. I would estimate that about sixty percent of our clients are repetitive. The clients that are repetitive use our ongoing support and maintenance package, called Amplify. Amplify lets our clients build a Codal team dedicated to their project on a flexible and scalable contract.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
Our engineers and designers estimate the number of hours each module or feature will take to complete and that is how we generate a time frame for the application development. If there are multiple resources working on the project at once, the time frame would be shortened. If our client has a date that the app must be launched by, and it’s a tight timeline, we’ll add more resources to the project when possible.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
Mostly it depends upon the type of application but usually, Backend and API development take longer than the front-end development.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
Some of the parameters that go into determining the right platform include:
● Clients timeline & clients budget
● App features and functionality
● How many users are on the app
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
It completely depends on the type of project and its requirements. Our iOS and Android teams are skilled in the latest mobile standards and have the experience necessary to get your project done right.

For many of our clients, their app or website is not just an extension of their business—it is their business. For those who require 24/7 support at a moment’s notice, Codal can form a team of developers who are completely dedicated to your platform. They are your troubleshooting stewards and are available around the clock to squash bugs, remedy defects and ensure your application is always running seamlessly.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
It is difficult to give a suggestion without knowing any information on an application. We develop websites and mobile apps for both iOS and Android, all backend with the most cutting-edge technology available today. We conduct extensive business analysis and research of your company, industry and users to determine the strengths & weaknesses of your platform and base a design strategy off of it. Understanding deep into the problem space, we conduct thorough competitive research and begins gathering business intelligence. Armed with this knowledge, we craft in-depth user persons, journey maps, and user touch points.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
Once we get all relevant project information from a potential client, we take all of the documentation and pass it along to our business analysis and engineering teams. Our engineers estimate the number of hours each task and feature will take, and that is how we come up with the final cost and timeline.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We offer a few different payment models and are very flexible with our clients. We typically bill for time & material, which is “true billing,” where our clients will receive a bi-weekly invoice for the work completed. If the client prefers, we will offer a fixed project rate, broken down into milestones.
. Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We don’t have a minimum budget requirement. Most of our projects are quite large and we are definitely not the cheapest option out there. But all of our clients know that when they work with us, they are getting quality work with highly experienced individuals on the team.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2018?
Our project range is quite large, but most of our projects start at a minimum of $15,000.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
This really depends on what type of app it is like consumer-facing, B2B, etc. Every application has a different end goal and the end goal is important in determining the business model.
Kindly share your feedback on how GoodFirms has been doing so far in increasing your visibility among potential clients.
It’s great to work with GoodFirms and allow potential partners and clients find us through the portal, It really has given our agency some good visibility and brand awareness.
