Codup Executive Interview

Asim Bawany
Asim Bawany
CEO
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
Located in the business hub of Texas, US with an outclass engineering team in Pakistan, we’re an award-winning software development company with a team of 150+ that includes developers, QA engineers, project managers, and business consultants who all work together to help you accelerate digital transformation.

I am the co-founder and CEO at Codup.
What is the story behind starting this company?
My brother and I hailed from 2 different backgrounds.

Adam is an artist at heart with a flair for design. He ventured into graphic design and started Bawany Media. I am a problem solver, entrepreneur, and marketer. I started Big Moose Marketing in 2010. In 2012, however, we both joined forces and started Codup with the mission to revolutionize software development delivery and create a workplace our people could call home.

Our first year as partners was very difficult due to us being brothers barely 2 years apart in age. However, we quickly realized that we make a great team because we both bring unique and complementary skills to the table.  Adam has very strong focus and organizational skills. That made him a great operator and project manager. I on the other hand with my diverse background in sales, and marketing and a natural aptitude for problem-solving, was able to bring in the right type of clients, partners, and team.
Together, we’ve grown the company from scratch to a team of 150+ professionals and growing.
What are your company’s business model–in-house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We have a team of 150+ and growing. Our core services include Staff Augmentation and End-to-End Project Development. While we have a network of partners, the bulk of our work is done in-house in the heart of Karachi.

Our clients are small and medium-sized businesses and startups to large enterprises. This gives us the opportunity to bring in fresh blood from the best local universities and give them a solid path to growth where they can grow their careers with us. This also means that many of our clients grow with us because we are able to offer unmatched reliability and stability to their long-term projects that most others in our industry promise but are unable to deliver.

We work on all 4 major engagement models that the industry uses with FIxed Bid Projects, Time and Material Projects, Dev Retainers, and Staff Augmentation. Clients are able to use any and all that fulfill their business needs.

Due to this, many of our clients literally grow with us and over time our relationships evolve into “partnerships” in the truest sense of the word.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
Our company is built on 3 core values: Excellence, Integrity, and Dignity. These three values essentially set us apart from our competitors. Everything that we promise: top-notch communication, superior expectation setting, high coding standards, mature processes, efficient project management, and an agile environment all boil down to the three core values.  As we grow our team, we ensure that each employee we onboard share these values with us and feels strongly about them. Each one of our team members is a high-integrity individual who strives to create value for our clients, themselves, and Codup.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
Retail and Manufacturing is one of our top niche markets where we have strong expertise. We have a proven track record of building, SaaS, PaaS, Custom eCommerce Solutions, and Travel Tech. We also support seed-stage startups with their engineering needs and help them hire Silicon Valley caliber engineers for a fraction of the cost.  Our Customer Lifetime Value is high. Almost 80% of our clients are repetitive. We have served most industries: Manufacturing, Retail, eCommerce, Marketing, and Travel Tech.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
eCommerce Development (B2B and B2C), Web Application Development, and Staff Augmentation are our most popular services. One of our largest channels for these services is small US agencies (generally less than 10 person teams) that need a solid dev partner to be able to go out and sell with confidence.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
We have a 4.9 rating on review platforms like GoodFirms. Based on that, our customer satisfaction looks good. Perhaps the biggest contributor to these ratings is indeed our insistence on our 3 core values; Excellence, Integrity, and Dignity. With these, we are able to instill the right mindset in our team which motivates and enables them to deliver at a very high level.

In addition to this, we have very mature processes around client qualification, expectation setting, and delivery. Its starts with finding the right type of clients to partner with. That sets us up for mutual success. From there it's just making sure we only commit to what we can absolutely deliver and then follow the process to final delivery. We consistently over-deliver on all our projects.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
I do not believe in a ticketing system for the kind of work we do. I realized early on that clients hate a ticketing system for the kind of service we provide. We do complex work and it takes multiple types of communication to ensure that nothing gets lost in translation, especially when most of our work happens across multiple timezones.
We have open lines of communication through multiple channels like Slack, Email, Whatsapp, and Phone. Whenever the customer faces any issue, they simply reach out via any channel they prefer and our project managers ensure that their issues are resolved promptly. We have our teams working multiple shifts throughout the day so your issue doesn’t wait until the next day. We ensure our clients’ experiences aren’t affected by time zone differences.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We have multiple and flexible modes of engagement: Fixed Price, Monthly Retainer, Time and Material, and Staff Augmentation. When a client approaches us, we spend the time and energy to determine which pricing model will work best for their needs and make suggestions accordingly. Ultimately, they choose how they wish to engage with us.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Our best work has been done with clients who started out very small with us. Many have quite literally grown with us. Clients who started with a couple of thousand dollar projects went on to partner with us on large, million-dollar projects! For that reason, we have kept our minimum quite low to this day. We take on projects with a minimum budget of $5000. Although most of our projects tend to start around $20,000 and go up from there.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
We’ve been in business for 10 years. We started with 2 people (one of whom is with us today) and employ 150+ people today. We already have a strong reputation in the markets we operate within. In the next 10 years, I see Codup as a global leader in the IT Services industry with a strong sales and pre-sales presence in the US, UK, Nordics, and Middle East with strong back offices in Pakistan, Eastern Europe, and LATAM.

This custom software development project involved multiple layers of customizations and development work including API integrations, custom Freshdesk and Freshsales app development and workflow automation. All of this allowed our client to automatically send a CSAT survey link to customers via SMS as soon as their contact was created in their CRM with the customer’s response saved in both their helpdesk solution and CRM.

The result was improved CX and increased customer loyalty for our client.

As part of this B2B eCommerce Development project, we developed an intuitive online catalog for our client. The online catalog allowed our client to take the first step towards digitization. Retail

After getting a sound understanding of our client’s business model, their unique products, and the challenges they faced during fulfillment, Codup devised a solution for them. We would build a custom Shopify app that pretty much solved all our client’s problems and helped them cut inefficiencies from their business.

Our custom Shopify app helped our client solve their business complexity, optimize their eCommerce channel, increase efficiencies, and make the most use of their resources.

E-commerce

We used Node JS, React JS, and MySQL to build an end-to-end eCommerce marketplace that connects notaries with their customers.

We built three types of users in the Cyberize It platform:

  • Admin that controlled the whole platform and managed users
  • Customers who signed up to get notarization services
  • Notaries who signed up to offer their notarization and witnessing services

By building the Cyberize It online notarization marketplace, Codup was able to bring our client’s vision to life. Our agile development processes allowed our client to go to market much faster than what it would have taken for a complex project of this size.
