What is the story behind starting this company?
In the early 2000s, when mobile increasingly became the crucial mode of communication, collaboration & connectivity across the globe, and further propelled by the advent of touch-screen-enabled smartphones, we saw a big revolution coming that would change the world rapidly in the next few years to come.

Understanding the growing potential of the mobile landscape, the three co-founders, Arvind, Aakash, and I, came together to seize this massive global opportunity ahead of us. With Arvind came marketing excellence, Aakash pitched in with strong technical expertise, and I contributed with my decade-plus experience in the mobility domain and operations excellence. That’s how Copper Mobile was founded and we kick-started our journey in 2010 from Dallas.

Exactly as anticipated, mobile technology expertise emerged as the most sought-after skill as a service. With the advances in mobile technology and infrastructure, the need for connectivity, accessibility, and availability continues to increase multifold in these last 2 decades. What are your company’s business model–in-house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We utilize the benefits of a well-architected and well-executed Digital Transformation Strategy to convert Clients’ challenges into business modernization, automation, and efficient growth opportunities. With a 200+ strong in-house, highly skilled workforce across geographies and time zones, we primarily offer two engagement models to our clients.

1. Project Based or Turn Key -
In a Project-based/ turn-key engagement, we act as your end-to-end Technology Solution Partner. Right from building the Strategy together, working on UI/UX, Architecture Design, Development, Quality Assurance, and Deployment to ongoing Support & Maintenance. This generally can be structured as Fixed Bid engagement if the requirements are well-documented and/or finalized for the planned release.

If the requirements are not defined, documented, prioritized, or analyzed from a business perspective, it can be executed as a Time and Materials engagement within a ballparked budget or it can be initiated as a Discovery Phase to help with defining the roadmap that can be later converted to Fixed Bid or continue to run as TnM as per Client's preference. In either case, the engagement is fully Agile and transparent to the Client's stakeholders, to be aware of the progress and priorities of various deliverables aimed toward the business goals established.

2. Team-Based or Team Extension -
This engagement model is an option where the Client may have a team in-house and desires to establish or extend a Team that needs our expertise to augment a specific project or skills. In general, this could also be a remote Team, co-located Team, blended Team, offshore Team, nearshore Team, Hybrid Team, etc. At the same time, the focus continues to become a very cohesive Team to the Client's culture, process, and vision to enable the scalability requirements for Client-managed initiatives.

When a client approaches us with a business problem/proposal, we just do not simply implement it; instead, we do a complete end-to-end feasibility analysis, give our inputs and suggestions, and a detailed solution proposal to solve their business need. As a process, we follow a 4-Step approach which has proven to be effective and has been very well received by our customers.

The first step is the Discovery & Strategy Formulation phase, where we assess all the challenges and requirements to define the overall Strategy. We do discovery sessions with clients to understand not only the problem at hand but also their business and the need for the solution they are looking at. Once the approach has been finalized, we move to the Iterative Design Phase, where we prepare Process flows, Wireframes, and UI/UX-driven Storyboarding.

After the wireframes and storyboards are approved by the client, we move on to the Development Phase, where we start the implementation based on the defined architecture and technology stack that fits the overall Strategy and feasibility. This is followed by a rigorous QA Phase, in which we review & refine to ensure quality deliverables. The entire process is highly Agile, with customer involvement and feedback adopted at every step so that the end product meets the business priorities, market strategy, highest quality, and overall customer satisfaction.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
As an Agile company, we work very closely with the Customers throughout the entire journey of our project. We understand that requirements evolve and change during the process, and being Agile gives us the flexibility to adapt to these changing requirements and keep the customers happy and aligned. The entire process is highly transparent, with sprint plans shared in advance and followed by daily stand-up, and weekly demos/updates to ensure the client has all the updates related to project progress, timelines, and milestones.

A dedicated team works on a project with a Project manager who is directly responsible for dedicatedly and promptly handling all queries and issues raised by the clients. We support all methods of communication like audio/video calls, emails, messaging communications, project tools like JIRA, slack, confluence, etc, and regular client visits as needed for effective collaboration.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions, etc.)
We are flexible with our payment structure to ensure clients' requirements are met within the budget and timelines. Copper Mobile provides the following payment models to extend its support for client's technology initiatives -
  • Fix Bid Payment Model: It's a milestone-driven payment structure where we bill the client after completing the pre-determined project milestones. Change Management is closely followed in this process to align with the Fixed Project Requirements to be successfully delivered.
  • Time & Material Model - In the T&M payment structure, clients are charged on an hourly bill rate basis for the project resources and with an overall maximum budget identified to work with. Communication, Governance, and Collaboration are key to aligning with Agile goals of business and time to market.

An innovative business idea and long-term partnerships are indispensable components of our checklist.
