Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
Enlightenment.ai is a data strategy company, focused + lead by impact.

The impact is the driving force of EAI. Our company specializes in data strategy. We help our clients and partners bring a real positive impact through Data Science and Artificial Intelligence on their companies, their people, and the world. As the CEO of a small company, I have to take on different responsibilities, both strategic and operational. In one day I might be refining the company’s objectives and in another, I might be talking to a client.
What is the story behind starting this company?
EAI went through a major evolution.

We started as a typical data science company focused on delivering data science and AI projects of the highest quality. This was a natural evolution from our background: technical people who worked for universities like MIT, market leaders, and even investment funds in places like Singapore and London.

With time, executives gained our trust and instead of just asking us to design and implement data science systems, they started asking us for strategic advice on their data and data-driven products and services. For us, this was like a new beginning, a new start for Enlightenment.ai. After this, we have worked with clients on this particular subject and that was also when I started developing FORCE, our own data strategy methodology.
What are your companyโ€™s business modelโ€“in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
Quality is super important to us. We take our data strategy services very closely and personally. However, then when it comes to execution, being a small team of experts also has its limitations.

Sometimes a project is just too large for a team our size to implement in the right time frame. In this case, we take on the leadership of the project and then we work together with a network of reliable, proven experts we had a chance to work with in the past. This way, we manage everything for clients and we guarantee the work will be done with our quality standards.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
EAI leads by impact. Nowadays, data science, big data, and artificial intelligence have become fancy buzzwords that many companies use only for their marketing purposes. For us, these are not just words. We know how to leverage the potential of data to maximize our clients’ profits and sustainability. A lot of the time this can be done by either empowering decision-makers with data to drive their most important decisions and by automating repetitive tasks with data science and AI. We always strive to provide value and assistance to our clients on their data-driven journey.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We work with a wide variety of sectors, from retail and banking and finance to transportation and healthcare. However, our work experience and exponentially growing interest from other industries constantly prove that data strategy can be applied for every sector. That is why we always tailor our services to the needs of our clients to assist them in the best way possible.

Because we work with such a variety of customers and projects, the ratio of repetitive clients cannot reflect the diversity of our customer behavior. What we can say is that our data strategy program is a continuous process and that’s where our clients are the most repetitive. As for execution, it varies greatly. Some companies want help with a specific one-time project while others want permanent support. Our longest relationship with a client started in 2018 and hasn’t yet stopped.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
Our core service is the Data Strategy program which fully guides companies towards becoming data-driven. We help companies understand what data can do for them. It is based on our FORCE methodology where each letter stands for its own module: Foundation, Observation, Resilience, Competence, and Expansion. Nonetheless, every company is unique and these modules adapt to each specific context.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customerโ€™s needs and requirements?
We always pay close attention to our customer satisfaction. After the end of each project, we make a survey asking our clients about their experience during the cooperation, and if there’s anything they would like us to improve.
 
In order to meet the needs and requirements of our customers, we conduct both interviews and observations.

We do this at all levels of the company, C-board level, managers, and field-workers. As for observations, we join the company’s professionals for some time during their day-to-day work, in order to better understand their needs, wants, challenges and constraints. We believe that a deep understanding of each company’s context is key to a successful application of technology, such as data science and AI systems.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
We are very attentive to our clients and provide assistance and support whenever needed. We always try to make sure that the experience our customers have during and after the cooperation is as seamless as possible.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
R&D projects typically have a higher risk than regular development projects. For this reason, we always prefer a payment structure where the risks are shared between the client and us.

For single-time projects, there’s an initial payment of 50% at the beginning of the project and 50% upon delivery. For longer relationships, we tend to adapt this to each client, but there’s typically some kind of initial payment and consecutive monthly payments.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Investing in data science should not be seen lightly. When managers make data-driven decisions, it’s crucial that the supporting work is done correctly. The same goes for automation.

We have had multiple prospects turned into clients after they declined our proposal and started working with someone cheaper only to see that project fail. We try to avoid phrases like “I told you so”, but a lot of times, that’s the feeling.

We are, however, lucky enough that clients that take data science and artificial intelligence very seriously and allocate considerable budget for these initiatives. That’s also the reason why they are with us.

To answer your question directly, our budget requirements are a function of three variables: complexity, duration, and how overbooked we are. If there are multiple clients who want to work with us at the same time, the required budget tends to increase.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2020?
Unfortunately, we cannot disclose any information regarding our contracts with clients. We deeply respect and value the trust of our customers and keep this information confidential.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
In less than 10 years we are THE data strategy company, helping our clients capitalize on their data through different services and products.

Review Summary

I am responsible for the innovation in my company, and I was a bit lost on how to structure the data in a way that I could not only analyse what is going on, but also what actions we should be taking to improve our business.

There are multiple companies in the market that do Data Science but most of them will bill you by the time, so their incentive is for the project to take as much time as possible (billing you more in the process).

Enlightenment AI takes a different approach, they start by doing Data Strategy. I know most people feel the pressure from upper management to get going, but this was totally worth it.

By starting with Data Strategy, we were able to understand which data was important for our specific business case saving thousands even before starting the project.

Once they actually started doing Data Science, we had a Data Roadmap for the whole project. Everyone knew exactly what needed to be done and what was expected. Saving time and money.

Itโ€™s my understanding that most Data Science projects fail, now I can understand why, no strategy from the get go.
