Evon Technologies Executive Interview

Sumeet Arora
Sumeet Arora
CTO & Founder
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
Evon Technologies started in 2006 and currently have a team of around 250 people. We are focussed on consulting and software technology services serving small and medium enterprises as well as startups around the world. I am the Founder of the company and hold the position of CTO. My primary role in the company is to discover new industry verticals and emerging technologies and help the company watch out for more opportunities. I also help in formulating solutions for specific set of clients, shaping their ideas into reality with key technical inputs.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
The idea behind starting this organization was to offer top quality technical services to the client and accept hi-tech challenging assignments. Now the challenge that companies face in metros like Delhi NCR or Bangalore in creating offshore teams for clients is that it is very difficult to retain employees in these cities which becomes a hindrance in investing in people in order to offer long term services to the client, as people keep on switching jobs. That is why the idea was to target B class cities and setup development center there so that the overall productivity of the people is very high and we can retain people and the knowledge for longer periods.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We operate on a completely in-house team model and do not work with any third party vendors, contractors or part-time models.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
In accordance with our business model for setting up development center in B class cities in India, we chose Dehradun as the primary test center. This empowers us to offer the following three values to our clients, compared to other companies.
  1. Low Attrition Rate: You can invest in an Evonian’s training without worrying about him leaving the job anytime soon. When a client or a startup is investing in the idea, the biggest asset at that point is the knowledge and IP that is developed in the people who work on the project. Now, if the team keeps getting changed every six months, that becomes a very big challenge for the client due to loss in retaining knowledge and increase in costs due to continuous training cycles. So, lower attrition rates help clients in investing in the people as they are ensured of long term commitments for their service.
  2. Higher Productivity: We do not have so called "big city" problems like high travel-time & pollution. That makes us a healthy workforce. Moreover, with such problems out of the way, we can happily spend 8-12 hours in the office each day.
  3. Lower Living Cost: Hence lower billing rates.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We have clients ranging from startups to small and mid-size enterprises in the domains ranging from education, entertainment, media, medical and healthcare, eCommerce, financial etc. Yes, we do have repeat customers and in fact 50% of our business is from long term customers who have been with us for 3-4 years or more. Apart from the repeat business, we get a lot of our customers through references from our old customers. Our marketing costs are very low because of this reason. Our current satisfied customers always  help us get new customers in a big way.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
The standard parameters that matter in determining the timeframe for developing a mobile app are:
  • The functional scope of the app, of course
  • Number of OS platforms it is required on
  • Choice of technologies; native or cross-platform
But apart from these, there is another important consideration that plays a major role. Every application in general is a mix of specific business requirements (the core idea) and a host of other generic requirement modules; like membership, authentication, social sharing, notifications, like/comment, maps, in-built or third party chat, payment methods etc. These are generic modules implemented in many applications. We have code packets (our own IP) for such modules that can be plugged into the core business requirements and used as-is or with minimal changes. So, we divide the requirements into core ideas and generic modules. We estimate for the core idea and these generic modules separately, which are plug-n-play in most cases, hence save a lot of time.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
This completely depends on the functional scope of the application. Again, the core idea of the application has to be developed and then it depends on how many generic requirements are there in the application for which we can utilize module code from our own code packet library.

We always suggest our clients to go by the MVP route, i.e., develop the core idea of the product as a minimum viable product in around three month duration, launch the idea, test it with end users and then build on top of it. It helps in reaching the market early and test the idea with end users to check what works and what doesn’t. Based on this, you get an early idea of what is best for the application in a rapidly changing market. If you are investing six months or year in developing the whole of the requirements and then launching, the market is changing by that time. So, it is better to get your idea across to the customers quickly and build on top of it based on end customer feedback.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
I assume, you mean the choice of right technology platform for the development of the mobile app. This is a very critical decision to make. We have teams for HTML 5, Native Script, Native and React Native. AngularJS and Ionic are also a favoured choice of technologies in our company. Following factors play an important role.
  • OS to be supported; iOS, Android etc
  • Critical technical functions required in the app involving hardware interaction functions; like bluetooth. These determine if we need to go native or use cross platform frameworks. If the app is a completely hardware drive app, then we prefer to go the Native route, but if hardware interaction is just a piece in the app, then we can also take the route of developing native plugins for such functions.
  • If the client requires a web application developed along with the mobile apps with similar functions on both web and mobile, then we can go by AngularJS and Ionic as choices for technology platforms.
  • Client recommendation and preferences, based on client side teams and their technical preferences, because in many cases, it is the client side teams that need to manage the application in the long run.
  • Timeline of the project
So, we have teams covering the entire technology spectrum for mobile applications. We make our suggestions to the client, but in the end it is up to the client to make final decisions.
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
We generally start with both platforms in parallel. The market size for both platforms is quite big and most of the clients need apps in both the platforms. If we are developing in ReactNative, the builds can be tested in both platforms simultaneously. All our developers have test devices for both platforms and they can test the apps on both at the same time. Even if we are developing in Native platforms, we try to develop both at the same time. At the most, the development cycle on one platform can run 1 month behind the other, so that the learning on one platform can be utilized on another.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
“Horses for courses” is the answer. Cross platform frameworks have got very popular now. They save development and testing costs and are easy to maintain over a longer period. At the same time, nothing can match native apps when it comes to better interaction with hardware function. Even in cross platform frameworks, one can write native plugins. So essentially, it is what makes the most sense for the application from technical, commercial and maintainability perspective.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
We have a well tried and tested method of drawing estimations which takes into account various factors like; functional scope, visual design expectations, critical implementation pieces (that may require a Proof of Concept), OS and device support required (that affects the testing scope).
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We work in both Fixed Cost as well as Time and Material billing models. Payments are either milestone based or billing cycle based.
We have developed effective methods to ensure complete transparency with our clients in billables. Our home grown product, www.findnerd.com, is used as a project management tool in all our projects. Clients are given access to the platform which is used for effective communication on the projects for Sprints planning and management, task planning, prioritization and assignment, issue management, timesheets and automated dev box screen captures. This gives a complete day-to-day clarity to clients into the time spent by the team in various project tasks and billed time.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Yes, we do have a minimum budget requirement. We do not take projects below USD 5000.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2018?
In the year 2018, we worked with 9 startups on Fixed Price model and 8 on Time and material (TnM) model. Fixed price projects were priced in the range of  USD 12 K to USD 45 K. The team size of TnM projects were ranged from 3 people to 12 people team.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
This varies depending upon the nature of the application and the target audience to which it caters. Some business models that we have employed in the past are; ads based, paid apps with a one-time fee, subscription-based apps, in-app purchases based apps.
Kindly share your feedback on how GoodFirms has been doing so far in increasing your visibility among potential clients.
We have received at least 4 interests in the past year which is good in many ways. Hoping for still better results after this interview.
