Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
Five Jars is an international Drupal, Web Development, Web Design, and Strategy company led by leaders with 10+ years of experience serving mid to enterprise clients in health & fitness, media, art & culture, and NGO markets.

As CEO, Director of Business Development, and Digital Strategist, I lead the company’s growth and expansion and build relationships with clients and partners.
What is the story behind starting this company?
Five Jars was founded in 2017 by a group of technology enthusiasts, digital experts, and dreamers with years of experience in other Drupal companies to deliver high-quality web solutions. The desire to be not just another web development agency but to provide clients with an exceptional boutique service has united these Drupal professionals. The main people core of the Five Jars is obsessed with honing processes, striving for perfect results even in small things and full ownership of the projects they work on. We gathered together only top talents to produce quality products and be as successful as our clients. Our enthusiasm, passion, and focus drive our efforts to meet our clients’ needs. We’re proud of our client partnerships, and we love what we do.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We are a group of professionals who are looking to disrupt the way digital agencies work sustainably. Because we want to change the industry, we do things differently. We are convinced that creativity, talent, and potential are not bound by borders. That is why we have people all around the world. We only hire the greatest people - it doesn’t matter where they are located. We believe in opportunities and do not only hire well-experienced experts but also people who bring a new drive to the team. The mix of fresh ideas and established experience is the key to our success. That said, we have an in-house team but with an extensive network of partners.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
We are a leading innovation agency that has built many progressive products. We aim to provide cost-saving strategies and always care about security. It is what really distinguishes Five Jars among other vendors. We build and support websites and perform overall digital transformation starting from work on the website, and we make a digital ecosystem and aim to increase our clients' revenue. Additionally, Five Jars team grew out of the Drupal community. We continue to be active participants in the community, allowing us to grow and evolve.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We cover multiple industries with in-depth expert knowledge and extensive experience. Our main development tool Drupal is great for certain industries (such as nonprofit, art and music, culture, health, fitness, etc.). It allows us to focus on certain technologies and evolve. Most of our clients are nonprofit organizations, and through our work, we are part of the impact of their missions. Our best products are present in industries such as education, health, and fitness, media, arts and culture, nonprofits, and enterprises.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
We believe, and our clients confirm, that everything starts with web development. Five Jars is renowned for being at the forefront of development trends, and our developers are among the most experienced and senior ones on the market. Our teams are interdisciplinarily organized and consist of developers, marketing experts, design gurus, and many other professionals leading in their very own fields of expertise. On the other hand, Five Jars is more than a developer. We create a product strategy together with the client and also offer design, hosting, support, and integration services.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
Five Jars have tried different approaches to communicating with customers over the past few years and empirically came up with a combination of factors that work best for us. We’re transparent: we organize our work using Agile & Scrum and provide clients with regular status reports. Our empathy helps us maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. We look at each problem through the eyes of the customer and try to create solutions that help clients reach their goals. Speaking of the practical side of the issue, our team also uses collaborative tools for communication and tasks so that the needs of customers are heard as quickly as possible and implemented literally before their eyes.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
We see ourselves as partners rather than service providers. Five Jars emphasizes long-term collaborations when it comes to supporting agreements. Together with clients, we develop an audit and maintenance schedule which integrates their unique peak times and requirements to accommodate clients' goals in the most efficient manner.
  • Platform upgrades
  • Security upgrades
  • Bug fixes and improvements
  • Website monitoring
  • Personal support
  • Regular checks of your website and its proper functioning
  • Support in using all functionality
  • Ongoing website testing to ensure functionality after browser updates
  • Content management support
  • Analytics support
As said, we see ourselves as partners – and we prove that with everything we do.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
In our practice, Five Jars accepts both fixed prices and time and materials. The Fix Price strategy is based on detailed planning and sequentially defining milestones before the real development process begins. It works best for projects that have a well-defined execution strategy, a ton of project documentation, and a clear roadmap.
The T&M method does not throw a client into unpredictability as it might seem. Even if the agreement doesn't have a set ultimate sum, Five Jars nonetheless gives a customer an estimation of the number of hours needed to finish the job. Detailed terms of cooperation and penalties in case of violation will be specified in the contract. Our team values T&M for the flexibility and transparency of the payment method.

The selection of the correct pricing is directly related to the selection of the development methodology and must be consistent with the requirements and objectives of the project, as well as the overall costs incurred by the developer.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We have some basic requirements for the project. These are technology, organization size, budget, and timeline. They vary across industries, but we try to clarify them to guarantee that we have the capacity to start and finish the projects in time.

In our experience, small opportunities may lead to long-term and fruitful partnerships, so if we feel like we are a good match for the client, we may lower the bar of the entry budget, so it is a variable rather than a constant value.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2021?
Given that we offer various services for long-term and newly onboarded, that number should be reviewed case by case. On average, we worked with budgets of $50,000 - $250,000+ depending on the type and size of the project.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
Five Jars will become a large company, a leader among other outsourcing companies. We will continue making a significant impact by providing the best in class services. Our projects and products will continue helping millions of people worldwide. Five Jars continues helping the largest and the best brands worldwide succeed by building innovative digital experiences and capitalizing on business and impact.

Spooky Nook Sports recently transitioned to a new CRM system and identified various areas for improvement. Especially the UX design and the user journeys required an update to align with the overall desired website experience. Five Jars was hired to analyze the current state, identify areas for improvement and, eventually, integrate the required third-party functionalities.

We have launched a calendar and schedules widgets on the website that are constantly syncing with the ACTIVENet CRM and display up-to-date information about all available events. In order to achieve a seamless and intuitive solution, we analyzed the current state of the CRM transition and anticipated the near-future changes to the data structure. We ultimately went live in a phased way to ensure a smooth roll-out of our solution.

George Washington’s Mount Vernon has been increasing its video production efforts to offer additional value to its visitors and members. Besides pre-recorded videos, Mount Vernon now offers live events and other captivating online experiences as well as a membership area with additional members-only content. However, their video content management system reached its peak of usability and they turned to Five Jars as their long-term development partner to re-design the way content is managed and presented to visitors and members.

Through the initial discovery phase, our developers created a detailed backlog and kicked off with a structured time and budget plan. The final solution not only reduced the time needed to manage the video portal by over 200 hours per year but also updated the UI/UX of the video portal to a more sophisticated online web platform worthy of Mount Vernon.

However, without having done any major update to their old website, their technology environment became outdated and error-prone. Five Jars was hired to update their entire website in order to enable the running of all the necessary functionality. By updating their entire web presence, Five Jars introduced a user-centric approach to creating seamless user journeys.

Five Jars migrated and overhauled an existing website to harness the power of sophisticated functionalities such as single sign-on and data analytics. One of the overarching goals, however, was to foster efficient updating in the future. Therefore, our developers created synergies wherever possible and created an intuitive user interface as well as a backend to simplify all processes.

Review Summary

Our company wanted to automate the process of notifying oil rig workers about their shifts. Employees often change shifts and we wanted to make this process more convenient and also move it online. We chose Five Jars for it. Being PHP-based, the scheduler is accessible online 24/7 and personnel can always keep an eye on their schedule. Administrative personnel can conduct reports on work, sign up, trade shifts and time off, and export the reports as Excel, CSV or PDF files.

What was the project name that you have worked with Five Jars?

Online Scheduler for Oil Production Company

What service was provided as part of the project?

Web Development, Software Development, Web Designing (UI/UX)

Describe your project in brief

There are three main units in the system: employees, units and shifts. Every employee is assigned to one or several units and always stays informed of his shifts — when, how many hours and with what team he is assigned to work. The employee can also trade his shifts, watch trade suggestions, read news and communicate with colleagues via an internal messenger or on the forum.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

I was afraid my lack of technical background would make it hard for me to follow project progress but PM was brilliant.

I knew what was happening at every step of the way.

We had regular weekly calls with the project manager on Zoom, and the main communication was via email or Slack.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Our partnership with Five Jars has been so productive that I have absolutely nothing to recommend to them.

Review Summary

For quite a long time we took orders by e-mail or personally from customers. It took a lot of time, as we either made layouts by hand or printed them according to the vague requirements of clients. All these difficulties have pushed us to take a step towards the digital transformation of our business. Development of the backend system allowed to reduce hand work time for business operators 4 times. We continue to actively work with Five Jars - the guys have a huge number of ideas on how to improve all processes of our production. The command tries to improve the internal data processing processes for our site, as we now receive ten times more daily data than ever. We consider the introduction of a new product type - photo books with a variety of settings. This is our next step in digital transformation.

What was the project name that you have worked with Five Jars?

Web-to-print solution for print shop

What service was provided as part of the project?

Web Development, Software Development, Web Designing (UI/UX)

Describe your project in brief

The team of Five Jars has developed a frontend and backend for our web tool to create print layouts. It includes several mockups for products: standard mug, standard water bottle, standard T-shirt, badge and several more items. The user can choose the color of the object, its size and load print and edit it in the print field (zoom in, decrease, move), add a custom text or choose from ready-made clipart such as flowers and hearts. The editor allows you to make simple manipulations with the user-loaded picture like cropping it, making it brighter or paler, imposing a few simple filters or making a picture black and white. The editor allows you to upload most of the popular formats of pictures. After a user-designed a layout and chose the date of redemption of the goods, we receive an order with a completed document on the side of the administrator panel and we convey the goods to print.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

We communicated on Skype and chatted in Slack, also Trello and Jira were used to track progress.

I can easily interact with the team, since we have no problems with the language barrier and the guys are always ready to listen to my requests.

The team is not afraid to take on difficult tasks, since many years of experience are on their side.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

I have nothing to say about this. This is a real partnership when the development team becomes part of the business.

Review Summary

At the beginning of the pandemic, I decided to improve the quality of its work and introduce new features following the latest e-learning trends. I was looking for companies that had experience with large educational platforms. There are some really big players in the eLearning market in the Five Jars portfolio, so I trusted their development experience. Our platform has become more attractive to users. Over the past year, we have noticed a significant increase in daily visits, so much so that we even had to change hosting. Five Jars helped us with that too!

What was the project name that you have worked with Five Jars?

Web Platform for Conducting Online Lessons

What service was provided as part of the project?

Web Development, Software Development, Web Designing (UI/UX)

Describe your project in brief

Our platform serves for conducting online meetings. At its core, there is a learning “room” that consists of a whiteboard and a web call possibility. The users create a room where they write text, draw and talk to each other in online mode. Any person can create their room or access the room they need by entering its name. Our Five Jars team provides a comfortable learning process by redesigning and making an intuitive layout with an adjusted whiteboard and responsive instruments enhancing such basic operations as undo, redo, zooming, selecting, moving objects, and others. Five Jars have implemented the possibility of group calls with the ability to share and record the screen, write text and draw objects on the board during a call, and basic operations with the board.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

Five Jars is very easy to work with! Recommend! We talked in Slack and periodically called up.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

I had my doubts about their hourly price, but it was worth it!

The team developed a site for creating and searching for events. Parents and event organizers play the main roles here - this is a truly family-friendly application that is designed to attract both parents and their children. The application itself contains all the events for children in the selected city in the form of a calendar based on filters, such as the age of participants, topics, duration, and so on. In addition, there is an event blog where users can comment on events or even share them via Facebook. I love working with professionals when I don't have to dive into a whole area that I don't know. Working with the Five Jars was a real partnership where the other side fulfilled their obligations without my constant checks.

What was the project name that you have worked with Five Jars?

Philadelphia Family Events Aggregator MVP

What service was provided as part of the project?

Web Development, Web Designing (UI/UX)

Describe your project in brief

My wife and I came up with this startup at a time when we got tired of searching the Internet every weekend for events where we could entertain our children. At that moment, we decided to make a website that would collect information about events in our city and facilitate the process of finding family entertainment. We decided to start with our community and, if successful, make separate versions of sites for other cities.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

I'm satisfied with the MVP we've done with the Five Jars team. I am currently looking for an investor for this project.

We had Skype calls several times, but most of the time I prefer text messages.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

I think the team needs to expand the development staff because sometimes the implementation of a feature was delayed due to other projects.

I worked in the luxury goods industry for a long time and realized that for the modern buyer there is not enough of something like a marketplace where luxury goods from different manufacturers would be collected. This would help save the buyer time and organize the purchase of all luxury items in one place. I chose Five Jars because of their price tag, attractive social media, and an office close to my home. Right now our MVP is ready for testing. It looks great and I think we will be ready to present the project to the world in a couple of months. Now I am looking for a more profitable hosting option for the aggregator.

What was the project name that you have worked with Five Jars?

E-commerce aggregator of luxury goods

What service was provided as part of the project?

The web application parses products from different source sites, such as marketplaces and brand stores. The product is registered in the database and its card is displayed on the site. In the admin panel, you can view disassembled goods, and edit their cards (description, photo, price, link to the official website).

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

They are open to ideas and willing to innovate themselves.

They are also really at the forefront of technological innovation!

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Review Summary

Our company produces and promotes entertainment channels on YouTube, such as a variety of content about creativity, quick handmade, channels dedicated to various ratings, channels with animated stories, and so on. We decided to create a small internal video editor that would allow us to quickly create this type of content so that producers could do it themselves without delegating these tasks to editors. This is a tool for internal use, so it's unlikely I can provide any detailed details. In any case, we saved quite a lot of time for our editors and automated the video publishing process. This greatly helps us expand our channels faster and helps us gain subscribers and distribute content.

What was the project name that you have worked with Five Jars?

Video creation automation tool for YouTube Production Company

What service was provided as part of the project?

Web Development

Describe your project in brief

Our small web internal video editor project includes a fairly standard video editor interface with a timeline and a preview window. The tool allows you to upload several videos, crop them, move them around the timeline, add certain editing effects, titles and sounds, speed up or slow down the speed of video playback, and scale video fragments. The final step is to render the clip in multiple video formats.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

They don't go into a long learning phase but quickly move into development with a sufficient number of experienced developers.

Five Jars is a team of professionals with many years of experience.

Five Jars never missed deadlines and was always in touch, using Slack as the main communication channel.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Since we are implementing a subscription delivery system, every week the team of chefs changes their menu, and new sets of dishes are combined and published on our website. Having collected all incoming orders, we manually created a table with all customers and their orders. All this took a huge amount of time and had to be automated. Initially, the Five Jars team acted as business analysts and studied all our processes in order to automate them effectively. Now, most of the preliminary work is done automatically, and not manually: the panel itself adapts and organizes orders, prioritizes them for chefs and builds delivery routes. Also, the panel now generates labels for orders with filled in addressee data. But the most valuable thing for us is that the team has developed a solution for automatically separating dishes from sets into individual ingredients. This allows you to transfer finished lists to the kitchen without manual labor. We are already using the MVP version.

Describe your project in brief

I am the owner and chef of a health food restaurant. Our family restaurant caters to the needs of vegans, vegetarians and people who maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

The guys listened to all my wishes and always supported me if I asked for a new feature. It was really comfortable to work with them!

Now the process of creating a list of food packages takes a few seconds instead of several hours, which can be done with a single click.

Processing orders in the system does not take much time.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

It's really hard for me to say something when it comes to improvement zones. It was a very comfortable experience, so I have nothing to say.

Review Summary

Having worked in the music industry for many years, I know how difficult it is to promote music products and distribute them to customers. The main goal was to create a platform with the ability for artists to upload their music tracks. Users who require background music (such as YouTubers, bloggers and other content creators) can choose a subscription plan of their liking or buy tracks one at a time. The platform also includes a large library of license-free tracks. Artists receive royalties for their work, and creators can use quality music at affordable prices. It's like Shutterstock, but for musicians! Now my platform includes over 100 genres and over 1000 music tracks and effects. In the near future, I plan to scale this startup and add not only the roles of musicians and users but also other music labels.

I am the owner of a private fitness club and a fitness app for this club. At the time I started working with the Five Jars team, I had a system of two mobile applications and a website that is used to upload content to applications. The applications are built more or less well, but the main problem with the site is that it was poorly coded, so the site did not work correctly. The Five Jars development team rebuilt the site from scratch, implementing all the features I needed and increasing the speed of the entire fitness system. They did not work with mobile applications, only with the web platform, but the system works perfectly. It's hard for me to say exactly what they did with the site code, but now users with the administrator role can control almost anything on the site. Our fitness system started to work much faster. Now it can handle a load of hundreds of users at once. Many of our clients have decided to try remote training from home using our updated system.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

They are ready to explain any development detail and do not try to use highly specialized terms. In other words, the communication was amazing.

We used a lot of internal tracking tools like Slack, so I always knew what was happening on the project.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

I don't think they need to change anything - I'm happy with my collaboration with Five Jars.

Review Summary

I am the CEO of a large manufacturer of custom folding cartons - we produce different types of cartons. We needed to create a web application for customers that would make it easier and more convenient to order the necessary materials, track stock balances and find out the current status of their orders. For a long time, we used spreadsheets for databases and the company's customers sent their orders in Excel or CSV format, and this was processed manually by the company's specialist. It was inconvenient for us and for our clients. The Five Jars team has helped us go through the full digitization journey. They implemented several off-the-shelf tools such as product configurators and a WYSIWYG editor for packaging, but most of the work involved custom development. Now the Five Jars team is focused on automating the workflow between departments within the company. This is a long and productive partnership that we plan to continue.

For a long time, we used spreadsheets for databases and the company's customers sent their orders in Excel or CSV format, and this was processed manually by the company's specialist. It was inconvenient for us and for our clients. With the onset of the pandemic, the demand for carton packaging has skyrocketed as a large number of purchases have been made online. Our goal was to simplify and speed up the experience of our customers in ordering and customizing carton packaging as much as possible.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

They easily get in touch and at any time are ready to discuss the details of the project at the level of understanding of the client.

Throughout the work with us, our project manager is in touch every day, who always knows the status of each task and at what stage the development is.

We have gone from spreadsheets to a stunning modern product with Five Jars.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

I have absolutely nothing to say about this, except that Five Jars needs to increase the development staff, as they have more and more projects, as fa

Review Summary

I am a professional artist who is part of a community of professional painters, decorators and frames. Our team strives to make it easier for businesses and individuals to purchase and collect art. Our community launched a startup selling contemporary art and customizing frames and glass for that. We were looking for a provider with similar cases in the art industry. On the Five Jars website, we saw that the team has experience in implementing a project for George Washington's Mount Vernon. The Five Jars team made it a goal to reduce the number of processes associated with the purchase of works of art. The user can find a list of paintings with a detailed description, including the author, sizes, materials, prices, and then add the picture with the glass and frame they like. We are planning to add an NFT purchase to the site shortly, so our partnership with Five Jars continues.

Describe your project in brief

Our e-commerce website is dedicated to selling paintings and custom frames to art consultants and interior designers. The site is based on simple Drupal CMS software and an e-commerce plugin.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

The Five Jars team are real partners, not performers. They dive into the project deep, suggest ideas and implement them.

The designer of the team created a modern and attractive design based on our wishes.

We also found them in several rankings and articles of the best web developers.

We could control the development progress in Jira and use Adobe XD for the design.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Working with them was an amazing experience so I have nothing to say.

Review Summary

I am the founder of the flower company. I wanted to implement an online sale and delivery of flowers from my flower store. Before the pandemic, we were not represented online, but now it has become a convenient way to do business. I needed a development team that would be able to create a workable product in a short time so that we would be presented online as soon as possible.

The Five Jars team has developed an online flower store with an admin panel and user profiles. As an administrator, I can change item cards, add or remove them, accept payments, and track the status of an order. The users can make an online purchase of any item, edit their profile and track the delivery status. The team used Drupal to create the store, and they also implemented a Stripe payment system.
The design team has created a modern and lightweight design that reflects the concept of buying flowers as a daily pleasure.
