Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
I am Alexey Kalachik, a Co-Founder and CEO at Fively, a full-cycle software development company headquartered in Warsaw, Poland.

Having more than 10 years of experience in software development for numerous industries and business niches, I always foster technology innovation and the best quality software products in our company. Together with highly professional like-minded engineers, we bring game-changing products and business-tailored services to market.

We are not limited by the client’s industry and company size: Fively works both with small yet promising startups and well-established companies to find new ways of how technology can transform and advance businesses worldwide.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
Back in the days when both I and my company partners were software developers, we often experienced how difficult it is to promote game-changing ideas in large software corporations overwhelmed with bureaucracy and strict hierarchy.

That’s why we had always dreamt of creating our own unique company. Having collected more than 10 years of experience and best practices in software development, we created Fively, which has now become one of the top-rated custom software companies according to numerous review agencies.

Fively is a well-knit team of like-minded senior software engineers with an in-depth understanding of business processes and strong backgrounds in numerous industries. This allows us not only to find a common language with customers from a business point of view but also to see which technical solutions suit them best.

Moreover, we have a friendly and easy-going atmosphere inside of the company which makes it possible to create lots of fresh solutions. At Fively, we give space to all the talents in our company, encourage their growth, and promote any brilliant ideas and hi-tech innovations.
What is your company’s business model – in-house team or third-party vendors/ outsourcing?
We provide both dedicated project teams and also strengthen clients’ in-house software development departments with our bright engineering specialists.

In both cooperation models, we help our clients with the discovery phase, analyzing the market on customer needs, competitors, must-have features, possible product advantages, and business opportunities and building the product roadmap. Then, we prepare UI/UX and technical architecture, ending with the development and maintenance of the product.

We have numerous frontend, backend, and full stack developers, as well as DevOps specialists, QA engineers, and web designers to scale up your team. We also provide could development services including end-to-end engineering of SaaS, PaaS, and other related cloud-based solutions.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
The most important benefit which distinguishes us from other companies is our unique business model: our deep technical expertise is combined with profound knowledge of numerous industries and niches. It helps us create high-quality business-tailored apps that are able to optimize clients’ workflow and generate a significant amount of revenue.

We also pay special attention to product investigation, as we know that this is of core importance for the smooth development process. That’s why from the very moment when the cooperation is started and till the product release, our team discusses with the client the main idea, target audience, features, and value of the future application registers any slight changes if any, and provides corresponding suggestions on the MVP, and the product itself.

Next, we’re devotees to transparent communication across all the company’s processes and projects’ development stages. Any technical and business questions, projects’ timelines, team structure, and budgets are discussed clearly, smoothly, and in a friendly atmosphere.

And last but not least, we are very open-minded, welcome fresh ideas, and always consider various approaches to fulfill our customers’ requirements. This out-of-the-box strategy allows us to get the best possible result with our products. I personally believe this is one of the most important factors for any software development project's success.

These advantages help us always be on the same page with the client, feel the beat of the technological era we are living in, and implement the best ideas and solutions in our custom software.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We work with many industries, as we have really deep expertise in various business niches. Still, most part of our customers comes from eCommerce, Cybersecurity, Fintech, Healthtech, Insurance, Real Estate, and Edtech industries (as of now, we have an almost equal amount of projects in these niches).

We are specialists in creating custom web applications and cloud-based solutions for enterprises (CRMs, HRMs, business automation systems, marketplaces, etc). Speaking about mobile development, we create mobile-friendly PWAs and native iOS apps, as well as cross-platform and hybrid ones.

The high quality of our services together with our client-centered and pure communication style, allows us to have a significant number of repetitive customers. As for now, 25% of our customers are repetitive. With many of them, we work for several years in a row already. We appreciate a lot the trust our customers have in our development model and always try our best to make our clients come back for a new product when it’s needed.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a web app?
It depends on the complexity of the certain app.

For example, if we take a standard web app development with simple e-payment options and basic customer management, it will approximately take less than 6 months to finish the development. Web apps for small businesses and simple eCommerce websites are classic examples of such apps.

But if it’s a complex web app with high traffic, robust personalization features, and multiple types of user accounts, the development usually takes up more than 6 months till the final product launch. Here we speak about HRM, BPM, CRM, and other complex business-tailored systems.

There can be additional factors such as changes in the product requirements, budget, or team structure, so we always recommend our clients contact the project manager and discuss all the issues as soon as they arise to work out the best possible timeline for each project.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right tech stack for a web application?
Choosing the right tech stack is half of the project's success, that’s why Fively specialists pay special attention to choosing the best-fitting technologies for each custom application. We provide professional development services using all the modern programming languages and frameworks such as Node.js, Python, React, React Native, TypeScript, Ruby, PHP, AWS, etc. The final choice depends on the product requirements, target audience, and scaling potential.

We always recommend our clients shift their assets to the Cloud, as this is the best way to transform and digitalize business operations. We also use scalable and highly flexible technologies to make the further maintenance and support of our custom apps budget-effective and flawless.
What types of web applications do you develop?
Fively provides a wide range of business-tailored software solutions to companies belonging to such industries as eCommerce, Cybersecurity, Fintech, Healthtech, Insurance, Real Estate, and Edtech. Our main segment is startups and SMEs (80%), with a growing number of enterprise companies. The majority of our projects geographically come from the USA, the UK, and the EU.

We provide custom web applications, cloud applications, workflow automation, web portal, virtual assistant, marketplace, as well as browser extension development services. We also create custom remote monitoring, HRM, CRM, and CMS software solutions.
Our software is designed to cover various customers’ business needs, optimizing their workflow and streamlining their operations.
Why do your clients prefer custom web applications over off-the-shelf solutions?
Off-the-shelf software can be limited in features, as in most cases it’s provided only in several ready-made versions or plans, that could not possess the needed functionality to the full extent. It can also be quite costly in the long perspective, as organizations need to pay for the functions they don’t use or for additional apps to replace the functions that are lacking.

Custom software development, and vice versa, has a number of advantages. It is business-tailored, which means that every element is designed to cover the needs of a certain customer; it is cost-effective, as organizations have all the needed functions in 1 app and can easily scale it; it's user-friendly, fast, and easy in use, so it can be utilized by all employees regardless their technical background; finally, it has the highest possible level of security, so all the customer's data stays safe.

Fively as a top-notch custom software company provides not only app design, development, and testing services. We also provide our clients with deep technical consultations, code reviews and audits, legacy software re-engineering, shifting to Cloud, and many other additional services.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding on the cost of a web application?
As I’ve already mentioned, it depends on the app’s complexity, the features our clients want to implement, the timeline, and the required scaling potential. There can also be some other factors like deep analytics, further technical maintenance, etc.

So the cost may vary on a case-by-case basis. Nevertheless, we always do our best to provide every client with the best-fitting tech stack, scalable architecture, and fair prices for all our services.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions, etc.)
From our experience, a greater number of clients tend to choose a fixed-cost payment model when they need full-cycle custom software development for their product idea. Due to the wide experience of our full-stack engineers and project managers, we can provide our clients with a highly detailed and accurate timesheet with estimates, timelines, and all the possible risks during the project development.

When we provide the client with our on-demand developers, we usually follow the time and material payment structure. Here we also provide the client upfront with the project estimation and timeline and only then start the development.

In most cases, the estimation has no amendments till the app is released. But sometimes, the client may wish to add or change some features until the project is finished, then we provide the client with a new estimation, and after their agreement, we continue to work.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If not, what minimum budget you have worked for?
We don’t have the minimum budget requirement for projects. Still, our customers see that complex business-tailored web application development differs from simple static website development, which is naturally reflected in the cost of our custom software engineering projects.

To help our clients out and to make the final cost fully transparent, we provide thorough assessment and professional consultation for free before starting any project. We also select the best-fitting team structure and technologies to use the development budget wisely and effectively and get the best result possible.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2021?
The price range of our custom software projects can vary greatly, so these figures can’t serve as a reference point, as each case is unique. Still, last year we had the lowest project cost at the amount of $25,000. What concerns the maximum amount, it’s really hard to state the figure, as we focus mostly on complex web projects with long-term cooperation, many of which last for years.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from web applications? Why?
Our engineers develop B2B and B2C solutions for businesses from eCommerce, Cybersecurity, Fintech, Healthtech, Insurance, Real Estate, Edtech, and many other industries. But despite the dissimilarity of our clients, we always recommend them to deliver the core functionality of the app for free or at least give customers a free trial period.

This will help to gain the needed amount of customers and make your target audience at least aware of your product and its features. All the additional and specialized features we recommend to provide on subscription basic with several plans available to fit the greatest possible amount of users.

Is it possible to create software that will be appreciated by both engineers and managers? Yes, we can do it!

DogQ is a California-based startup that is focused on test automation in web development. The main goal of our cooperation was to create a service for automating manual tests that would be feature-rich to impress engineers and user-friendly to be convenient for people without technical expertise.

We've made code-free QA a reality.

Our development team took over the technical implementation of this project and participated in the process from start to finish. The result of painstaking work is an online service that can automatically execute custom test scenarios of any complexity. In addition, scenarios can be combined into projects and edited if such a need arises. A range of analytics tools with all key metrics is available to users as well.

WebinarNinja, a world-famous webinar platform, decided to collaborate with Fively to fix bugs in their product and enrich it with brand-new functions.

WebinarNinja is an easy-to-use, all-in-one webinar platform. The company itself has headquarters in Sydney. The business owners were looking for experienced backend engineers who could not only brighten up the existing product’s code but also implement new functionality into the platform. We turned out to be the most suitable software company for this mission.

With minimal instructions, we dived into the preexisted code and put a good shine on it.

Our engineers started working on the automated webinar platform in 2019. Since then, the backend code has been carefully studied and optimized for greater performance across the platform. We fixed a pretty amount of bugs, improved platform loading speed, and ensured its seamless operation. Our engineers also created some additional functionality from scratch, including a complex system of registration forms for webinars.
