Fulcrum Executive Interview

Ihor Prokopenko
Ihor Prokopenko
CEO & Co-Founder
Visit Profile
Kindly share your feedback on how GoodFirms has been doing so far in increasing your visibility among potential clients.
I would say that we have not yet observed some really dramatic influence of GoodFirms on increasing visibility among our potential clients. Yet, I believe that GoodFirms is a great channel to raise awareness about the company and illustrate our expertise and reputation of a reliable outsourcing partner.
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
I’m a Co-Founder and CEO at Fulcrum. Fulcrum is an offshore, in-house agency. We build mobile & web apps that win users’ hearts.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
For me, outsourcing is not just about a good price, but also about deeper expertise. It’s about one common purpose - to achieve success.
I believe that in future outsourcing will be based on sharing both risks and results. I see it as a way to find your technical partner that wants and does the best for your business: finds a perfect team, offers top-notch solutions and supports you till your full success.

That’s what I founded Fulcrum for. We help entrepreneurs achieve their goals. By always being there for them. By having all the technical issues on us. Simply by becoming a reliable technical partner, who cares about their product 24/7.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
Fulcrum is an outsourcing software development company. We’re offshore, in-house agency.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
As I’ve already mentioned, outsourcing is the best suitable option for many companies and startups which need a reliable and experienced technical partner. It’s much more about efficiency and the most optimal expertise/cost ratio. Outsourcing allows companies to solve their business problems with the help of experienced specialists. I also believe that outsourcing model will become even more widespread in future, since in its core will be the responsibility for both client’s success and risks.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
Industries we usually cater to include business automatization, streaming (video processing), on-demand delivery, high-load systems, cloud solutions, gaming, cybersecurity, marketplaces, and social networks. We also thinking about entering healthcare industry, since under the load of current challenges it requires new IT solutions. Our customers are repetitive. To be more precise, our ratio of repetitive clients is 80%.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
App’s functionality. We do the mind-map, estimation to see how long the project will take.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
All depends on the app. It’s really hard to tell you some time period on spot.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
Industry, user portrait, the place where the app is used (at home, on the road, e.g).
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
We recommend cross-platform apps.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
Hybrid is better since the development process is faster.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
We mainly consider the scope of work required to provide a certain service, deadlines and time cost of the Fulcrum specialists involved.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
In Fulcrum, we offer 32 main payment models:
1. Fixed price. Client pays a set price for the project.
2. Time & Material. The team works on an hourly rate.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We’re working on the projects starting for $5,000+.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2019?
In 2019, the price range of projects was $5K-100K.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
One more time I would stress that outsourcing seems to be the most optimal model right now and in the future. It provides business with a reliable technical partner who offers their expertise 24/7.

We hired Fulcrum to take on part of our project for our client. They helped us create a Backend renderer for a mobile VR app. The app helps to create 3D scenes with custom models and backend side renderer. We had a strict timeline so we wanted to involve help from outside. We knew Fulcrum before, so we contacted them. The project isn't released yet, but we are at the final stage now. And our client is satisfied with the progress and with the code quality.

Review Summary

First of all, we would never have had a new site if we were to do it our self since we don't have the time and resources. In addition we needed someone we could trust as we have a very strong, personal ownership to our startup. As of project completion, we have not deployed the site yet, but the feedback from testers and focus groups indicate that the new site will serve its purpose.

What was the project name that you have worked with Fulcrum?

Last Call

What service was provided as part of the project?

Web Development

Describe your project in brief

Fulcrum created a new landing page for a website based on provided requirements. This involved creating a wireframe and then implementing agile design and development.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

They are young and really engaged in both the tech and the solution created for us. I feel that they are on our side in this. The ability to be confident in pricing is something I have never experienced before. I think the pre-project setup is very productive as long as you are able to keep agility in the project execution.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Difficult to do bigger changes in the middle of the project since we have more or less fixed the scope after the pre-project. I suggest having a buffer in the budget to use in case we find some bigger changes we want to do.

Review Summary

So far, Fulcrum has worked accurately, and the app they developed has received positive external feedback. The team's thorough QA process allows them to identify and fix bugs before the production phase. On top of having well-structured processes, they are committed to fulfilling business needs.

Mobile App Development

Describe your project in brief

After going through a discovery phase, Fulcrum worked almost completely from scratch to develop a React Native, cross-platform iOS and Android app that features direct in-app links to various niche products.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

Their communication skills and the processes they have in place are incredibly well suited to startups. The team really gets what we are trying to do. They understand that we have massive time constraints and that this product is our baby. Their processes are brilliant, and they communicate incredibly actively. Those are their two main strengths.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

No, I have no suggestions. I would really be scraping the barrel if I answered this question. There are always areas people can improve but, to be honest, I really can’t complain because they’ve done a great job.

Describe your project in brief

Fulcrum was hired by an online jewelry retailer to develop an e-commerce site. The team has initially prepared a product requirements document before working on the site's development.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

First and foremost, we were impressed by Fulcrum’s flexibility, which is especially suitable for a startup like us. Their approach worked very well for us and it was totally pro-client. Overall, the website development was professional, proactive, and on schedule. It was more than we expected. For us – a startup that faces lots of unknown issues and problems – Fulcrum was a stable point in this project in terms of the development & following the timelines.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

They did their job with great professionalism and made us happy with the website they built. So far, I don’t see any considerable areas of improvement for Fulcrum.

Review Summary

We decided to engage Fulcrum on a pre-project to map out all of our needs and essentially start the full specification of what we needed to start operating and start building. We had a four-day workshop with them where we agreed on what they should start building.

We worked in Figma, so they prepared the mock-ups and wireframes and we approved them and made any changes together. We have worked together for nine months now so they have quite a good idea of our long-term product vision. It is quite simple for us to communicate on new features and improvements.

In terms of development, Fulcrum built React Native apps for iOS and Android for the driving students, and they also built an iOS app for the driving instructors. With the student app, the student can arrange all the different driving lessons. They don’t choose the instructor, but they choose the timeslot, and then the system will assign them an instructor.

They select the pickup address, so they use both a calendar for booking as well as a Google Maps API for selecting the pickup address. Then the booking is forwarded and added to the instructor’s calendar.

They connected all the APIs. It is hosted on AWS, and they used SendGrid for the email confirmations before and after the lesson, as well as the Twilio API to send SMS and texts. They also integrated a European payment provider to charge payments and built our admin dashboard. We also have a simple but not constantly evolving analytics dashboard so we can see how the users interact with our app.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

First of all, for us in Norway, it is quite expensive to contract both developers and PMs, so the price is important for us because we are also a new company and we don’t have a lot of money to throw around and especially not to waste. Pricing wise, they are very good. They have a very good product vision, and they share our long-term goals. They are a young team, and I think they are hungrier than a lot of other developers that we talked to, especially compared to the local developers that we talked to. Fulcrum is eager to get the job done and they are a lot faster than other development teams.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Not really. We haven’t had any situations where we needed to straighten them out so to speak. I don’t have any experience working with other remote teams like Fulcrum, so my comparison bar is not the best. From other people I have talked to who also worked with them, they seem quite happy. I am not sure what could have been done better or differently.

Review Summary

Fulcrum delivered a working MVP platform. The thing that impressed me was the level of quality control and testing that they applied on their side. We went through a rather extensive testing of all use cases. Compared to previous experiences I’ve had, and given our shoestring budget, there was very little that didn’t work. They have a very good process for making sure that what they specify and the changes that come up are fully regression-tested. Another helpful thing is that they’ve been incredibly responsive in terms of dealing with small bugs that came up on the weekend or other times outside of the agreed-upon response times.

What service was provided as part of the project?

Mobile App Development

Describe your project in brief

Fulcrum developed a web platform with JavaScript, React, and AngularJS. Following a discovery phase, they developed the MVP with user and admin interfaces. They did thorough testing and remain on retainer.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

Their internal quality control process sets them apart. I assume they have the size to also tackle bigger projects. They have sufficient resources to add an extra developer when things get tight. They keep all of these resources together.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

For some of our questions, I wish the project manager had more technical expertise. There were many things she had to take back to the team. It wasn’t a problem; she just couldn’t give me immediate answers. I got the sense that she didn’t have a technical background, but it was okay in the end. As long as she had project management in her control, it was fine.

Review Summary

I've worked with Fulcrum on three products so far (two low-budget MVPs and a fully scalable marketplace product) and all of my interactions and our work together have been efficient, high producing, and complimented by all of our users.

Everything from the client onboarding work to the discovery and requirements gathering phase, to the timeline and design work to the final development follows a very professional and optimal process to give the right communication and thought partnership across the business and technical teams. I highly recommend Fulcrum for all of your software and app development needs.

Describe your project in brief

Launch a two sided marketplace (web) for physicians to find nonclinical consulting gigs in the US.

flipMD (acquired by GoodRx) is a competitive marketplace where physicians can source and secure consulting side gig jobs coming from a broad range of clients across all major industries that need medical experts in their line of work. Clients set the parameters or their jobs, including a fixed-rate budget or hourly rate, to get bids from interested consultants. Consultants are hired for work based on credentials and availability. Collaboration is made easier through messaging tools. Payment and bookkeeping is made simpler and more secure through online money transfer at the point of hire, and release of funds upon approval of work.

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

Thoroughness in communication, documentation and following best practices for design and development.

Commitment to keeping timelines and budget requirements that align with the business objectives.

A willingness to dive deeper into the strategy of the business, user experience, revenue and branding goals beyond the technical requests sent.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Nothing, they are honestly that good, they take feedback and critique very well if you ever need to course-correct.

Review Summary

Fulcrum designed & developed a website for one of our projects. At the moment, our client had problems with low conversion & sales, so we recommended Fulcrum and they performed a UX audit. The client was so impressed by the insights Fulcrum presented after the audit, that we eventually decided to continue with further website redesign & development. In the end, Fulcrum delivered an appealing website built on React.

During our partnership, Fulcrum managed to render all the features the client required in the website, still making it user-friendly and stylish. The development went really smoothly too, our client was satisfied with the project itself and mentioned great growth in conversion after the website was released. Great job!
