Project Overview:

Uniconverge Technologies partnered with Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Ltd. (UGVCL) to develop a proof of concept (POC) for advanced meter reading in areas with unreliable or unavailable cellular networks. The project focused on implementing a LoRaWAN-based solution to facilitate remote meter reading across challenging environments in Gujarat.

Challenges and Objectives:

Remote Locations Without Cellular Coverage: Many areas under UGVCL's jurisdiction lack reliable cellular network coverage, making it difficult to implement traditional remote meter reading technologies.
Accurate and Timely Data Collection: Ensuring accurate and timely collection of meter data was critical for efficient billing and energy resource management.
Seamless Integration with Existing Systems: The solution needed to integrate seamlessly with UGVCL's existing infrastructure, particularly the L&T utility meters, using the DLMS (Device Language Message Specification) protocol.

Our Solution:

Implementation of DLMS Stack on LoRaWAN Network
Uniconverge Technologies deployed the DLMS stack over a LoRaWAN network to enable secure and reliable data communication over long distances. This solution allowed UGVCL to perform remote meter reading without relying on cellular networks, ensuring consistent data collection across all locations.

Remote Meter Reading in Non-Cellular Areas
Utilizing the LoRaWAN network's ability to provide connectivity over long distances and in areas with challenging terrain, the solution enabled UGVCL to gather meter readings from remote areas with no cellular coverage, ensuring uninterrupted service.

RS485 Interface for L&T Utility Meters
The L&T utility meters were connected to the LoRaWAN system via the RS485 interface, enabling smooth data transmission using the DLMS protocol. The RS485 interface was chosen for its reliability and ability to transmit data over long distances with minimal interference.

Implementation Details:

LoRaWAN Network Deployment
A robust LoRaWAN network was deployed across UGVCL’s service areas, providing the communication backbone for meter reading in remote locations.

DLMS Stack Customization

The DLMS stack was customized to work seamlessly over the LoRaWAN network, ensuring compatibility with UGVCL’s existing systems and efficient data transmission from the L&T meters.

Testing and Validation
The system was rigorously tested under various environmental conditions to ensure it could handle the unique challenges posed by remote locations, validating its performance and reliability.

Conclusion:

The DLMS meter reading POC developed by Uniconverge Technologies for UGVCL in Gujarat demonstrated the effectiveness of LoRaWAN technology in overcoming the challenges of remote meter reading in non-cellular areas. By integrating the DLMS protocol with LoRaWAN and utilizing the RS485 interface for L&T meters, the project provided a reliable, cost-effective, and scalable solution for advanced metering infrastructure, positioning UGVCL for future growth and technological advancements.
