LambdaTest Executive Interview

Asad Khan
Asad Khan
CEO and Co-Founder
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
LambdaTest is a cloud-based cross-browser compatibility testing platform that gives instant on-demand access to 2000+ different browser and operating system environments. The platform allows developers, testers, product managers, and web owners to perform live interactive testing or run selenium automation scripts on the choice of browser, browser versions, or operating system combination including both desktop and mobile browsers.

Our vision is to bring all testing related tasks to a single integrated cloud platform. As a step towards this vision, we are working on eliminating the need for developing and maintaining expensive infrastructure for testing. Now you won't have to maintain in-house device labs or worry about maintaining an expensive private cloud of virtual machines. LambdaTest platform handles this for you. This frees up developers and testers to focus on developing quality products instead of worrying about infrastructure.

As a Co-founder and CEO, my role is to amplify with the vision and scope of the product and the company so that the team continually feels excited about where the company is heading. I always take out time to analyze if we have the right people in the right places or do we need to reshuffle a bit for better results. LambdaTest endorses a culture where every effort gets duly rewarded, and I love to keep a close eye overseeing and maintaining it.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
The aim behind building LambdaTest was to build an integrated ecosystem where testers and developers do not have to worry about the development and maintenance of infrastructure. An integrated platform where all tools talk with each other and a developer or tester doesn’t have to hop from one platform to another for every small task.

The main source of inspiration was Adobe, who has built an umbrella for designer i.e. a single suit for designing, photography, videography editing, and designing needs. LambdaTest cut down the steps included in testing web applications and helped focus developers and building products that solve real-world problems.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
LambdaTest is a Software as a Service platform that aims at bringing the whole testing ecosystem to a cloud-based platform. For now, we are providing the on-demand testing infrastructure that is used by developers and testers for performing testing of their web-based applications. We provide browser, browser version, and operating system combination that the user may not have access to, in-house. We have an in-house team for all aspects of the application development process and rarely get the need to outsource any task to third party vendors.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
The biggest value addition LambdaTest brings is in terms of freedom from investing in infrastructure for testing purposes. Users would not have to invest both time and resources on building up in-house device labs or worry about maintaining sets of virtual infrastructure.

Most cloud-based infrastructure providers focus on providing access to hardware on the cloud. You would still have to invest considerable effort in developing the desired environment of the operating system, browser, and browser version for testing purposes.

With LambdaTest, we take care of maintaining and developing infrastructure. Every time a new operating system is launched, a new mobile device is launched, or a new browser is released, we add it to our infrastructure cloud, and users get on-demand access to these environments at no extra cost.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
LambdaTest is used by developers, testers, project managers, webmasters, and web owners of companies of all sizes. We have users ranging from fortune 500 companies to months-old startups.

We offer subscription-based services; and thanks to our platform’s performance and our customer service, we have a very high retention rate. We are growing exponentially month on month, and we have a very high rate of repeat business. In ratio, more than 30% of users every month are new subscribers, whereas the rest are repeat users.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of testing an application & website.
For all web applications, and especially so for customer-facing web applications, the most critical parameters to test are usability, functionality, user experience, and performance. Usability and functionality have to be tested even before making the website on production, whereas performance and load-taking capacity of a website is something that can only be accurately tested in a live environment. We also recommend thorough testing of web pages on different browsers for cross-browser compatibility and testing on all the most popular mobile devices for the responsiveness of the webpages.
How much effort in terms of time goes into testing the front end and back end of an application & website?
Effort spent in frontend and backend testing is dependent a lot on the structure and purpose of the website. Compute-heavy websites that have a lot of background server-side processes usually require longer and thorough backend testing, whereas user-facing heavy websites with lots of frontend pages and functionality require more focus on frontend testing at every release.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right model for testing?
Before starting any project, it’s really important to start thinking about testing right from the planning phases itself. The key parameters to consider includes:
● Type of product being built and architecture of the product
● The objective of the testing
● Development and Release cycles
● Resources and Team Available
● The budget of the project
● Target Audience of the final product
● Devices, operating systems, and browsers being used by the target users
Agile Testing or Waterfall Testing. Which testing model do you prefer?
LambdaTest has always been a customer-centric company, and due to the same, we have always preferred agile development methodologies. Agile method allows us to add any feature in the product in a short amount of time.

This especially comes in handy in a case where we have to close an enterprise deal which is stuck due to a single feature. In my honest opinion, the agile methodology should be adopted by all startups as it will give them the flexibility to make changes in their product fast.
Please list some factors which are important while testing a product or service.
There are multiple factors to consider while starting any testing project including:
● Performance of the product
● Compatibility of the platform with different browsers, operating systems, and devices the users may use to access it
● Usability of the tool
● Testing process to be implemented
● Scalability of testing solution
● Targeted demographics
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of testing a product or service?
Here are the key deciding factors before choosing any testing product:
● Scalability - Ease of scaling up the testing solution as the main product increases in size and features
● Ease of use - How intuitive and use the platform actually is.
● What are the alternatives - Are there any possible alternatives that can get the job done easier, faster, or cheaper?
● Pricing and Cost of scaling up - What’s the price of the product now and what it would be as scale-up. There are a lot of platforms that cheaper alternatives at the starting; however, their cost starts rising exponentially as you grow in size.
● The number of man-hours saved because of the tools - Is the tool actually saving time for the team or is just another bureaucratic layer that will make the whole process more complex and time-consuming?
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions, etc.)
We follow a fixed recurring cost pattern under which our cost-per-month is based on the number of concurrent sessions. What this means is the number of parallel real-time or automated tests a user can run. More concurrency means more price.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
LambdaTest platform is open for all as offer both, a freemium plan and a paid plan. In our free plan, users get 60 minutes of real-time testing, 6 sessions of 10 minutes each along with 200 minutes for automation testing.

We offer 3 kinds of paid plans:

Review Summary

While we develop our web applications, our top concern was to verify the unintentional changes to the application's visuals. We need to make sure that changing one component doesn't break the styling of another component.

LambdaTest's Smart testing helped us to identify visual regression bugs for every new build. We could capture our website screenshots belonging to different environments i.e stage and production & upload them on the LambdaTest Visual Testing platform.

We were able to discover visual deviations with pixel to pixel comparison by capturing screenshots, comparing them against the baseline image, and highlighting visual changes. The slider mode is very helpful to compare the visual discrepancies between the two images by toggling them. Overall, Smart testing helped us perform reliable visual testing at scale and eliminated the risk of delivering visual bugs.

Review Summary

As technology advances, enterprises are switching from manual testing to Selenium Test Automation. But one area most enterprises are still struggling is with the scalability of running several tests in parallel. LambdaTest has been a boon for us when it comes to Selenium automation. With a Selenium Grid based on the cloud, we don't need to stress about setting up and maintaining infrastructure anymore. We can run hundreds of tests in parallel on 2000+ browsers and OS versions running on real machines. LambdaTest really helped us in reducing our web testing cost and at the same time scale it as and when required.

To leverage on marketing campaigns, we needed to ensure all our deliverables render seamlessly on different mobile and desktop browsers our users use to view them from across the world. The geolocation testing functionality helped us set the location and test our website over various locations. At LambdaTest, we can now run geolocation testing to test our website across 40+ countries. The pricing plan is pretty simple and easy to grasp, with no hidden costs at all.

LambdaTest Selenium Grid has been really productive for us to substantially shorten our test cycles and sustain cross-browser compatibility on the legacy versions of browsers. This was on priority as we could see the spike in users using our website from the older browser versions. Another feature I like most is its well designed UI, very stable and quick, which makes it easy to use and configure. LambdaTest also provides us with precise documentation of individual features to make the testing process easy to learn and implement. Cheers to LambdaTest! for giving us such a powerful tool.

Review Summary

Running tests serially can be a good option when your product is at an early stage. But as we scaled the product, we needed a tool to reduce test time execution and pace up our test cycles. LambdaTest simplified the Selenium testing experience for us with their cloud based platform which allowed us to execute our test cases in parallel on hundreds of browsers. We could easily automate the test cases, get the sessions recorded and share the test reports across the team for assessment using Asana integration. We even leverage the integration with CircleCI to run automated tests on LambdaTest through our pipeline. The CircleCI Orb is handy for testing our privately hosted application.

It’s good to see now that using LambdaTest we could run multiple tests on multiple VM’s, saving us hours of testing time and maintenance cost of local infrastructure.
Personally, one thing that LambdaTest does very well is continuing to provide tutorials for testing, so that we stay up to speed and are even able to learn new things.I definitely saw myself applying a lot of the new concepts that I learned from their blogs.

The industry we function (e-commerce) has a broad category of audience. We need to make sure our website is accessible to everyone irrespective of the browser / operating system they use. Ofcourse, responsive web design check is a major bullet point over our testing checklist as well. As a B2C, it's crucial for us to stay ahead of the customers and we wanted a solution which could help us ensure our changes would work seamlessly when shipped to the Production.

LambdaTest made a great fit here when considered the latest browsers on the product, ability to test local pages along with a complimentary access to LT browser which is an absolute delight for our developers and testers. It helps us save a considerable effort on responsive testing plus the native developer tools allow us to dig deep into any UI mismatch! Also As mentioned we could achieve wider test coverage in time by running multiple combinations of browsers in parallel with LambdaTest automation suite. Our director to purchase the subscription was due to their affordable pricing for the parallel tests and the communication from the support team!

Have been using Lambdatest for around 1 year now, and could say that it’s a useful testing tool for our team. Offering great combinations of browsers and operating systems for you to test on and most importantly there are many types of additional logs that come with each test which helps in debugging.. Glad to see the integration with Travis CI due to which we could optimally use this tool with our CI CD pipelines directly. We were able to effectively run TestNG and Selenium tests using their documentation and as an added advantage their support team is quick and helpful.

There is a latency in a single test when compared to a local machine. Maybe because of the cloud? So you have to run in parallel to cut down on testing times.

Review Summary

Using LambdaTest automation we could run all our functionality tests suits across multiple browsers and OS. Helped us identify UI misalignment specific to browsers or functionality failure due to incompatibility with a particular browser. The good part is you can automate screenshots and get insights into where and which browser your website’s UI is going off. Then we can use the live feature to identify and debug the compatibility issue. We strongly believe customer experience is the key and that could impede your product growth. With lambdatest, we could see improvements in identifying errors before our customer does.

Few Recommendations:
Offers out-of-the-box geolocation testing in automation which is amazing!

As said we perform multiple tests for browsers coverage, so we have scaled up our testing pipeline and are now running multiple tests in parallel. This scaling up was way too easy. No more adding VMs for testing locally.

Further, offers integration with CI/CD tools like Jenkins, Gitlab which makes our cycle easier.

Mobile application testing would be helpful for us. We have been asking the support team for this feature but it's yet to be implemented. Would also like to see more devices for screenshot testing.

Review Summary

Initially we had mixed feelings about trying this tool for our automation tests, however the trial period itself made us realize why investing in this tool would be worthwhile. Never knew our app was breaking in so many browsers !!

LambdaTest provides a good stack of web browsers environments to test against for running both manual and automated tests. The setup was super easy and intuitive, which is a big thumbs up! Interactive dashboard, very easy to navigate, and integration with Jira saves a lot of time. We now run multiple tests in Parallel on different combinations of browsers. So we increased our browser coverage and brought our whole pipeline to the cloud. This also improved the productivity of the team.

We are using the tool for cross-browser compatibility testing of both our production apps and prototypes. The UI is very neat, all features are easy to reach and intuitive, and most importantly, the feature to send issues directly to Backlog is a major time saver. We are now running all our regression test suites over LambdaTest, and we are very happy with the browser coverage we are getting.

Few points I would like to mention:
Covers all the latest browsers and operating systems we need with around $180 annually, decent I would say! Offers visual appeal supported with screenshots and video recordings for manual testing, and very reliable service , as we use automation suite for running tests throughout. Features to test native apps are missing and speed lags should be improved.

Review Summary

Being an e-commerce website, our main concern was to make sure that we don't lose out on customers due to bad shopping experience. LambdaTest proved to be a savior for us here, as one platform does the job! My team was able to test our website across varied browsers (based on our target audience) and reflect on any bugs encountered. We use TeamCity to manage projects and were surprised to see LambdaTest offering integration with the tool.
I would say we stumbled across the right tool at a right time.

Some winning points to consider:
The UI is pretty clean and easy to navigate, at first glance we were able to figure out.
As said the choices of browsers are massive and responsive testing becomes easy.
Integrations and convenience are the win points here
Free to start, which means you can actually see how it works and then take the decision to buy.

Apart from these I felt for mobile testing, if possible to simulate the finger pinch would make it more realistic. Also had some speed issues while taking the screenshots (for which I got in touch with the support team) I think will be looked upon now.

We use LambdaTest across our development & testing team. Our developers always perform cross browser tests on their local pages across different browsers and their versions before sending them to the testers. The integrations with 3rd party tools make it more useful. It provides a full development environment that looks very close to the real thing.
Before we started using LambdaTest, we're limited to the browsers and their versions that are available on our desktops and laptops. But now with LambdaTest, we are using Selenium grid of 2000+ browsers and their versions available on the platform.
If you want a solution to replace testing infrastructure that is hard to main and look after, LambdaTest is the best solution according to us.
