Kindly share your feedback on how GoodFirms has been doing so far in increasing your visibility among potential clients.
I think the best part about a listing on GoodFirms is the chance it gives us to have conversations with like-minded people in the industry. It opens Mutual Mobile up to fascinating prospects and hands us the platform to explore fresh opportunities. We couldn’t be happier with being mentioned on such a proactive platform!
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
Mutual Mobile is a leading technology company that brings digital experiences to life through an integrated approach. We have been at the forefront of digital transformation ever since the advent of the smartphone era a little over a decade ago. We’ve worked on building digital experiences for companies like Walmart, Nike, AccuWeather, The Economist, and more.

I’m the company’s President. I bring over 12 years of international experience on the back of a multicultural background and several roles in the tech industry to this job. I started as a QA Manager in India but eventually grew to be Mutual Mobile’s General Manager. Some learning and professional development later, in 2019, I rose to become the company’s President. I believe that my unwavering desire for knowledge, optimism, and an appetite for risk has helped me fulfill my true passion for helping renowned brands make the best of technology.
What is the story behind starting this company?
Mutual Mobile was founded by a group of highly creative individuals in 2009. Initially, they were just testing new waters and built an app for the iPhone — which wasn’t thought of very highly, to say the least. But soon, the company began to grow by leaps and bounds as it explored cutting-edge technologies and began delivering work for reputed companies. From creating a few of the first-ever smartphone apps to working on the horizon of emerging technology, our passion for innovation continues to drive us up and onward.
What is your company’s business model: an in-house team or third party vendors/outsourcing?
Mutual Mobile is a global company with offices in two cities — Austin, USA, and Hyderabad, India. In both locations, we work with the best local talent to deliver the ultimate customer experience. Our project teams sit in India and have some of our most creative thinkers. They have rich experience in catering to the tech needs of some of the largest global companies. We keep almost all of our work entirely in-house to control quality and offer competitive pricing. But, occasionally, we bring in outside experts or additional development support. In such cases, we work closely with our partners to ensure the overall client experience is seamless.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
Well, our competitors include other emerging digital technology firms. They make us better and stronger in several ways. In fact, we wouldn’t be doing well were it not for their constant push to innovate and break past boundaries. This is why we keep a constant eye on staying ahead in the game. On a granular scale, we invest in our people and ensure they get the optimum time to work on their craftsmanship and improve their skills. But on a larger scale, there are no two ways around it except an unrelenting focus on customers’ needs, a genuine curiosity to solve their problems, and working to open new streams of revenue.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
At Mutual Mobile, we believe we have the right mix of people to work with both Fortune 500s and startups alike — and a quick look at our portfolio explains why. For instance, during a period that saw us deliver well-received work for companies like Walmart, AccuWeather, Nike, and The Economist, we were also working with up and coming startups like Dribe, TechDen, and Ruckit. This has given us rich experience with a diverse range of industries — including Banking/Finance, Construction, Healthcare, Education, Energy, Retail, Media, Sports & Fitness, and Travel.

Although a lot of our customers choose to stay on with us for support and maintenance, we encourage our team to look beyond the scope of what is conventional and work in industries and with companies that don’t have it all figured out yet. So that would put us at a current ratio of about 80:20 (repeat business to new business). This healthy openness to change and adaptation keeps us on our toes and ignites our spark for learning.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
Our roots go back to the days where apps were still relatively new, so app development — especially cloud-native custom apps — (iOS, Android, Web) is something Mutual Mobile is synonymous with. But the umbrella of our offerings today is much wider than when we started and includes capabilities to manage enterprise cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP), as well as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), eCommerce, and software engineering capabilities in general. As a full-stack and full-cycle development agency, we like to say that Mutual Mobile can take you from whiteboard to product launch — and that’s expertise clients of ours can always bank on.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
Our teams are known for their transparency and free-flowing communication — both in Austin as well as Hyderabad — as well as rich experience in the lines of work we undertake. This has fetched us a lot of boomerang clients — people who refer to us when they move companies or begin new projects. This has naturally led to a positive feedback loop and keeps us hungry for improvement. I would say that we need to experiment even more with emerging technologies. Apart from our work in North America, we have made a foray into Europe with Dribe — a very exciting Danish startup. We are looking to capitalize on this by digging deeper and working with clients from an even more diverse range of industries and geographies.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
Communication is mission-critical at Mutual Mobile and for us — action is the source of power. So we display our commitment to clients by actively molding ourselves to their specific requirements. This could mean constant testing and iteration — something our experience has taught us to never compromise on. One thing about Mutual Mobile every client seems to enjoy is how open and communicative our teams are. This is the result of a concerted effort we make to be more approachable and keep our discussions with clients more free-wheeling.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
Most of our projects happen on a pay-per-hour basis. These hours are calculated to correspond to the features we agree to develop in the scope of work. However, there are instances where this model feels inflexible, which is why we sometimes use the pay-per-milestone system as well.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Yes, we pegged our minimum budget requirement at $25,000. Although the budget holds significant weightage in our list of qualifying criteria, it isn’t the only one. We cycle through a variety of concerns and problems to determine if a client we’re onboarding is a good match for our skills and experience. If they aren’t, we’re only too happy to pass up the opportunity because there simply is no room for quality compromise in Mutual Mobile’s DNA.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2020?
That would be between the range of $25,000 to $1.8 million.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
We see Mutual Mobile matching the tech industry’s growth pace for pace. After all, we have been around since the first-ever smartphone apps came out. In 10 years’ time, we see ourselves doing more meaningful work than ever before and deploying technology solutions that bring change in people’s lives. On a more microscopic scale, this means taking up work that actively pursues tech breakthroughs and focuses on creating tangible real-world products and solutions for purposeful businesses.

Retail

Mutual Mobile partnered with Walmart to create an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) in-store shopping experience. With the aim of giving shoppers a glimpse into the future of retail, the VR experience lets shoppers browse Walmart aisles, pick up products, read labels, talk to virtual assistants, and load shopping carts. It repositioned Walmart as a leader in the retail technology space and created a lot of positive buzz at SXSW 2017. The experience put retail shopping beyond mere brick and mortar establishments and proved virtual can be just as interactive as face-to-face, if not more.

Mutual Mobile partnered with Nike to create Nike SB 2.0, delivering an award-winning digital experience to skaters world over. Enhancing a previous build, it offers dynamic animations to search for cool tricks with the Learn-It multi-angle video player that enables skaters to watch the pros perform tricks frame by frame, in slow motion and reverse. The enhanced build offers improved backend functionality for iPhones and integrates Beacon — which allows Skaters to broadcast video content to big-screen displays at events. In addition, we designed and developed an iPad web console to help admins upload videos and manage content during events.

Mutual Mobile partnered with Southwire to develop a Configurator app that let it quickly deliver accurate quotes to a large audience. We focussed on an intuitive user flow that flattened the previously steep learning curve and let users make more granular choices. It helped Southwire do away with paperwork and rely on a digital Request For Quote (RFQ) system. Since the app was a web-based one, it threw the platform open to a diverse group and increased user growth by 700%.

Marrying React Native with Danish design standards, the app offered B2B and B2C solutions on both iOS and Android. We developed cloud hosted systems to manage identity, inventory, subscription, and third-party integrations for both app versions. Our team provided proactive design support while managing separate work streams to work on new features and enhancements. Within a year of its launch in 2018, Dribe acquired over 1,600 users and welcomed over 1,400 vehicles. We currently work with them to lead expansion into new markets and explore franchise opportunities.

Review Summary

This application has been in the pipeline for a while and my team had brilliant ideas for it. This created an overwhelming situation on both sides but the project manager at Mutual Mobile strategically handled everything which was impressive. We had multiple sessions for a month to discuss the strategies and requirements of the application. I must say they kept me updated regularly and I received the final product on time.
