QAwerk Executive Interview

Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
QAwerk is a software testing and QA agency established in 2015. We specialize in manual and automated testing of SaaS products, meaning we help businesses test front-end, backend, mobile apps, and APIs.

We help midsize companies and startups like Unfold, Evolv, and Zazu achieve exponential growth by thoroughly testing their software, seamlessly integrating with their internal teams, and serving as a tech advisor sharing the commitment to the product’s long-standing success. Thanks to prioritizing software quality, Unfold, for example, managed to transform their simple, often crashy story maker into a powerful, one-billion-user platform recognized by Apple, Google, and Squarespace.

So far, QAwerk has helped over 300 products globally enhance their software quality and eliminate costly bugs. While QAwerk is a relatively young company, our expertise and steady progress are recognized by reputable tech media, such as The Next Web and TechCrunch.

Our testing team has also gained solid experience in testing mobile games and penetration testing. We grow organically and continuously explore new niches to expand our expertise and provide additional value to our clients.

Giving back to the broader tech and business community is another crucial part of our work. We contribute by testing software for free and showcasing the bugs we managed to find, often of critical, high, and medium severity. We call it Bug Crawl, and anyone interested in the initiative can participate and request free testing in exchange for being featured on our website. Bug Crawl is the best fit for companies who’d like to receive an unbiased opinion on their software quality from an independent tech expert and compare their internal bug reports with ours in terms of their depth, types of the issues found, and severity of those bugs. Bug Crawl is also highly beneficial to startups with limited QA resources and lax testing processes as it is their chance to spot critical bugs and redesign their testing strategy.

In 2020, we released Bug Hunter, a mobile app designed for Android app developers, testers, and UI/UX designers. It addresses the numerous challenges of manual testing of Android apps, such as the high granularity of Android OS versions, the multitude of screen sizes and resolutions, and hardware differences. Bug Hunter’s mission is to ease the lives of manual testers by reducing the amount of repetitive and monotonous work and eliminating the need to use multiple apps to verify the accuracy of UIs under test.

As a Founder and CEO, my primary task is to ensure that each department is fully operational and that any arising issues are dealt with efficiently and promptly. I equally care about the happiness & success of my clients and the happiness & well-being of my team. I believe in happy employees bringing their best selves to work, translating that into the projects they are working on, and positively impacting our clients’ businesses.

I am a software engineer turned entrepreneur, so I continuously master new skills and dive deep into less technical stuff like sales, marketing, and SEO to delegate, improve existing workflows, and effectively communicate with non-techies.
What is the story behind starting this company?
Software testing is an indispensable part of any development project. You can’t write the code once and expect it to miraculously work for the years to come. Any kind of software requires continuous, comprehensive maintenance, and professional software testing is what keeps it running.

Especially nowadays, when it feels like new frameworks appear every day, browsers become more advanced, and the SDLC is reduced to keep up with the competition. Frequent releases are no longer an advantage, rather a must-have, proof your product is legit, secure, and consumer-friendly. All these factors prompt businesses to race and deploy apps and features sooner than they’re actually ready to be taken to market. More so, when combined with overwhelmed in-house QA teams, this becomes a recipe for disaster.

My solution to the dilemma above is outsourcing software testing and basically killing two birds with one stone - you save both money and time. While the idea of outsourcing is definitely not new or unique, the way it is implemented is what makes it distinct.

I wanted to make a cooperation with QAwerk comfortable for a broad audience - small companies, well-established businesses, outsourcing pros, outsourcing rookies, technical founders, as well as non-technical entrepreneurs. To achieve that, I clearly outlined what we do and what we don’t. For example, we do provide our clients with independently managed QA teams, we do monitor the workload of our QA engineers, their progress, and prepare monthly reports highlighting our wins, areas for improvement, and ways to maximize our results. On the contrary, we don’t work with freelancers, we don’t do mere outstaffing, and we don’t overpromise.

QAwerk software testers can handle an entire software testing life cycle or take over its specific part - be it test planning, test case development, or test execution. We rely on our hands-on expertise, leverage the power of battle-tested testing tools & frameworks, and use modern testing methods to carry out full-scale testing of our client's products.
What is your company’s business model–in-house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
Having the right team is what distinguishes successful service agencies from outsourcing failures. I’ve always wanted to have full visibility of each project, build transparent relations with clients, and maintain the reputation of a trusted advisor. For that, one needs an in-house team of seasoned professionals; you can’t achieve the same results with freelancers.

QAwerk has 2 offices in Kyiv and Zaporizhia, Ukraine. For clients’ projects, we hire only middle and senior software testers to provide fast onboarding, good speed of testing, and consistent quality results. This approach not only safeguards us from failures but also helps reduce employee turnover as experienced QA engineers don’t get distracted by mentoring and managing juniors. We may hire a junior only for an internal project.

We are remote-first; however, we can travel to your location and work on-site should you have such a preference. Our geographical proximity to Western Europe allows us to work with European clients with no or minimal time difference. At the same time, our clients from North America, New Zealand, and Australia can benefit from the time-zone gap with Ukraine by ordering overnight testing - what used to take 3 days can be done in 2. In essence, overnight testing works like this: your developers write code and go to bed; it’s daytime in Ukraine, so we take that code and test it while your team sleeps; your developers see bug reports and feedback on the quality of their code first thing in the morning.

We found one more solution to minimizing feedback-related delays. If the project is well-documented, we can start working on feature testing even when the feature is still under development. We scrutinize the requirements, outline missing information, clarify assumptions,  and write test cases. This way, when the build is ready for testing, our QA engineers waste no time on communication and get to the practical stuff right away.

By the way, whenever you happen to be in Ukraine, come visit our offices to meet the team in person, learn more about our culture, and simply have a good time. We love having guests around.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
The IT services market in Ukraine is growing at breakneck speed. In 2020, it reached $5 bln, surpassing the export of transport and gas transit services. Therefore, it is only natural that more and more tech agencies are appearing on the IT scene.

Here is what sets us apart from similar vendors:
  • Test automation for comprehensive test coverage and boost in speed. Finding a reliable vendor providing manual testing is one thing, but hiring someone who is also proficient in test automation is a much more difficult endeavor. QAwerk helps businesses reduce the amount of monotonous, labor-intensive testing by covering common scenarios with test automation. When implemented the right way, it totally justifies the investment. Look at Evolv, a US-based provider of AI-driven digital growth solutions, who leveraged our test automation expertise and increased their regression testing speed by 50%.
  • Bar-raising and strong work ethic. We uphold high work standards and hire only experienced specialists who possess the technical know-how and well-developed soft skills. While assigning specialists to a project, we ensure it's a complete match - in background, experience, speed, tools & frameworks, interests, etc. The benefits of hiring an already managed QA team are apparent: you work with certified professionals, you delegate all the managerial burden to the agency, and you receive guarantees. None of these perks are attainable with crowdtesting or outstaffing.
  • Streamlined talent acquisition. Our HR Department works tirelessly to attract new talent, maintain and expand our candidate reserve, and strengthen our corporate image. All this effort pays off, allowing us to ramp up a team at a week's notice.
  • A complete suite of testing services - from functional, usability, and performance testing to API, security, penetration, and accessibility testing. We also take care of the project's documentation by updating, expanding, or creating from scratch test plans, test cases, checklists, use cases, bug reports, and traceability matrices. Well-maintained documentation helps keep things in order, brings clarity and longevity to the project, and our QA team can accommodate all of that.
  • Track record of clients' achievements - our expertise manifests itself in our clients' numerous awards and improved business metrics. With our help, Zazu, an African fintech startup, managed to successfully launch their app and secure Mastercard Principal Membership. Unpakt, a popular moving service marketplace in the US, used our support to painlessly migrate to a new tech stack, detect server-side bugs before a release, and cater to the needs of mobile users by eliminating website responsiveness issues we spotted.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
Since 2015, we’ve tested over 300 projects, among which are web, desktop, mobile apps, SaaS platforms, and games.
As for long-term projects, we have worked with businesses in the Workforce Management, Digital Growth, Media & Entertainment, FinTech, E-Commerce, E-government, E-learning, and GameDev industries.

Our Bug Crawl initiative allows us to tap into new niches and fully prepare our software testers for new projects coming in. Among the 200-plus Bug Crawl participants are:

•    Workplace productivity platforms & BPA solutions like Hive.
•    Marketing SaaS like Mailmunch.
•    CRM software like Zapier.
•    E-readers like Chegg.
•    Mental health apps like Smiling Mind.
•    Fitness apps like MyFitnessPal.
•    Video communication tools like Loom.
•    Music marketplaces like Cosound.
•    Social discovery apps like F3.
•    Food delivery apps like Postmates.
•    E-learning apps like Coursera.
•    Digital wallets like YouGo.

This list is by no means exhaustive as we test new products weekly.

As for our client retention rate, “repetitive” is not quite applicable to the software testing agencies. Quality assurance is tied to software development, and the latter is never a finished process. Also, there is no final software in the modern-day world. Every day there are updates and new versions of operating systems, libraries, browsers, devices, screen resolutions, etc. So even in the unlikely scenario your software is bug-free today, tomorrow it will have bugs when something is updated. Therefore, we measure our success not by the repetitiveness but by the lifespan of our partnerships. And yes, about 65% of our cooperations with clients is long-term.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
Most of our prospects, whether they’ve tried outsourcing before or not, share the same problem - lack or complete absence of QA resources. While not every project requires all types of testing to ensure decent product quality, having a tech partner who can cater to all of your testing needs is a pleasant bonus. Here are some of our in-demand services:

•    Manual testing
•    Test automation
•    Functional testing
•    Regression testing
•    Performance testing
•    Usability testing
•    Accessibility testing
•    Cross-browser testing
•    Integration testing
•    System testing
•    User acceptance testing
•    Security & penetration testing
•    API testing
•    Cloud testing

Clients who've worked with us for some time and witnessed our diligence tend to expand our area of responsibility. For instance, Evolv initially hired us to conduct manual testing only but soon entrusted us with automated testing too. Unfold has long delegated the entire software testing life cycle to QAwerk, giving us the utmost freedom in doing what we love and know best.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
As a service agency, QAwerk is, of course, customer-centric. Considering that we get 70% of our leads by word of mouth, I guess our customer satisfaction rate is pretty decent. We’ve come a long way to understand what keeps our clients happy. I’m not talking about the basics like being transparent, meeting deadlines, being able to deliver what’s been promised, being available, and so on.  These should be provided by default.

Cooperating with QAwerk is, first of all, comfortable. We’ve worked on Scrum, Kanban, Lean Development, and Waterfall projects using a multitude of tools: issues trackers like Jira, Azure DevOps, and Asana; test management software like CucumberStudio; CI/CD tools like Bitrise, mobile app testing tools like TestFlight. Such familiarity with some of the most popular software for testing and development allows us to be onboarded fast and get along with the client’s internal team from day one.

Secondly, we respect our clients’ communication style. We have clients who are email gurus and prefer communicating mostly in a written form, and we get that. Not every conversation requires a call, and we all know Zoom fatigue is real. On the other hand, we have clients who prefer to communicate via video calls and who’d rather over-communicate than miss out on important details. And we have no problem satisfying the latter request as well.

Lastly, when we ask our prospects what they value most in a vendor, they all seek and agree on one thing - reliability. It’s not the cost that makes them doubt; it’s the lack of trustworthiness, lack of social proof that this cooperation will be successful. In turn, we can provide a guarantee that everything will go smoothly since we’ve done it before, received numerous words of appreciation for our work, and brought tangible results to our clients.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
As I mentioned before, we provide the client with a team, and each team at QAwerk has a dedicated PM/BA overseeing the project progress.

Our project managers are our clients’ major points of contact who address their queries, escalate issues or requests to developers, and clarify any kind of miscommunication. They make sure we have a clear-cut vision of our client's immediate and long-term needs and prioritize tasks accordingly.

This approach frees up our clients from a large chunk of administrative work as they don’t have to micromanage and monitor the performance of individual QA engineers. Instead, they focus on their most critical, revenue-generating tasks while our PMs handle the team, balance workload, and prepare monthly reports.
Another crucial part of our support system is taking over all the documentation work. Before starting a project, we test the documentation for completeness and accuracy and expand it if needed. Suppose the project is not documented at all. In that case, we’ll create everything from scratch - starting with a test strategy, test data, and test plans and finishing with test scenarios, test cases, use cases, bug reports, and test summary reports. Our QA engineers and PMs are skilled in technical writing, so we keep all project materials crisp and clear throughout the entire STLC.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
Living in a fast-paced world, we all need a framework that would address the need to incorporate changes to requirements, new client preferences, and new consumer demands in a stress-free way. Our framework is Time & Material: our clients pay only for the actual work done and have full visibility of the time invested in testing particular areas of their product.

So how does it work? We have hourly rates, and we track our work day-to-day. At the end of each month, we provide our clients with a report breaking down the tasks and person-hours spent. Our clients have access to our internal ticketing system for ultimate transparency and control of their finances.

We also offer 4 subscription plans - differing in the number of products under test, types of testing to be performed, the number of supported devices, operations systems, browsers, test documentation, among other things. All packages are presented in greater detail on the QAwerk pricing page.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Yes, we do. We've never shunned smaller projects because they equally need help with software testing and quality assurance. QAwerk's mission is to make software better by reducing the number of bugs it has, and it doesn't matter if you're a startup or an industry giant. Your product is never bug-free; what matters is how many critical bugs it has and how good you're at triaging those bugs. Our clients have high standards and they know their business is special.

I know that some well-established software agencies are quite picky and proceed only with big and lucrative projects. While they think they win, they actually lose. You can never predict how a product develops, especially on a discovery call. Have a look at Unfold: they came to us with the beta version of an Android app, and in about two years, they became prominent enough to launch a new offering and get acquired by Squarespace, a website builder & hosting provider known around the world.

Since the tech industry never stands still, our minimum budget requirements are also prone to change. When contacted directly, though, we have no trouble disclosing them and informing our prospects right away of whether we're the right fit for them or not.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2020?
Our clients are startups, midsize businesses, and large corporations from around the world. So far, we’ve worked with companies from North America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and Africa. They all have varying testing needs, which explains the difference in project cost.

As of 2020, the price for projects we’ve delivered varied from $10000 to $2000 per month.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
Lesson learned from 2020 is that you should never be too confident in what the future holds. Nevertheless, our QAwerk team dreams big and plans to continue accumulating expertise in new domains. Recently, we’ve formed a team of penetration testers, and in the coming years, we’re going to expand our horizontal market even further.

Another goal to reach is to extend our services to new geographies, such as Denmark, Sweden, and Japan.

Having the team of professionals motivated to grow together with QAwerk, I know what we’ve achieved so far is just the beginning.

VirtaMed (Zurich, Switzerland): VR simulation software for health practitioners worldwide continuously tested and improved by QAwerk

"We have a specialty/niche product that needs a significant time for onboarding normally. QAwerk was willing and able to do the onboarding and work on the rather complex testing setup. There were some initial hiccups with the technical setup, largely owing to our specialty configuration, but the testing team was patient and willing to work with us on tackling the issues. The flexibility alongside the good technical work has become a staple of this product's testing" - Carolyn Mattes-O'Brien, Head of DevOps and IT at VirtaMed

NEED
VirtaMed turned to QAwerk to strengthen their on-site QA team with independent software testers. They looked for someone proficient in game testing because their medical training software is built on Unity, and the sessions themselves, to some extent, have game-like mechanics.

VirtaMed also needed someone flexible enough to cope with the following challenges: remote testing, medical terms, product novelty.

SOLUTION
Our QA team was engaged in testing software for LaparoS General Surgery and LaparoS Gynecology simulators. To achieve comprehensive, in-depth testing of the simulation software, we conducted functional testing, non-functional testing, UI testing, regression testing, negative testing.

RESULT
With our continuous QA support, VirtaMed can consistently release software updates while maintaining the quality bar high.

Together with QAwerk, VirtaMed managed to significantly increase test coverage. As an independent, third-party advisor, we explore their software from a different angle, which helps improve existing products and develop new solutions for online training.

Kazidomi (Brussels, Belgium): Belgium’s first ethical & sustainable webshop thoroughly tested and future-proofed by QAwerk

“QAwerk team has been of enormous help in improving the quality of our releases at Kazidomi. They are communicative and highly professional, with a proactive attitude. The automated and manual testing work we did with them was delivered to a high standard, and we’ve become trusted partners” –  Benjamin Stuart, Product Manager at Kazidomi

NEED

The partnership with QAwerk aimed at achieving the following results:

Faster bug fixing. Our task was to complete reports written by the internal team with pre-conditions, steps to reproduce the bug, and other details to save Kazidomi developers’ time and make it crystal clear what went wrong and under what exact circumstances.

Automated testing. We needed to introduce test automation to reduce the time spent on functional, UI, and regression testing, which in turn leads to faster and smoother delivery of new capabilities to users.

Improved conversion. QAwerk was responsible for paying utmost attention to the functionality directly impacting conversions. Our goal was to detect all possible conversion killers and ensure the user experiences no hiccups along their journey.

SOLUTION
For a web solution like Kazidomi, these types of testing were essential:

- Functional Testing

- Integration Testing

- Cross Browser Testing

- UI Testing

- Regression Testing

We wrote 587 test cases from the ground up, among which 284 were automated.

RESULT
First, we developed a comprehensive suite of test cases serving as a solid foundation for future testing. Another advantage is a faster development cycle through reduced time spent on testing.

Finally, we contributed to improving the product’s quality by detecting critical, medium-severity, and minor bugs before they reached prod, helping Kazidomi continue to delight their users with effortless and satisfying shopping.

Designing

Logo Maker Shop (Seoul, South Korea): Logo & brand story design app with 10K+ Satisfied Users rigorously tested before launch by QAwerk

NEED

PIXO turned to QAwerk for help with Android app testing. PIXO was explicitly looking for a QA agency that was not only a pro in Android app testing but also had a track record of testing apps with similar or the exact same functionality

CHALLENGE

We were responsible for ensuring the Logo Maker Shop app for Android matches the following requirements:

1. Runs smoothly on all devices. Testing Android apps is more challenging than testing iOS apps due to disparate screen resolutions and sizes of Android devices. Our task was to ensure Logo Maker Shop is fully optimized for several commonly used Android smartphones and the latest OSs.

2. Brings joy to customers. How do you turn an average experience into a satisfying user journey? By scrutinizing all functionality – from common paths to unlikely, yet still possible scenarios. Our goal was to thoroughly test the app from the tester’s and user’s points of view.

3. Google-Play-ready. Preparing the app for launch on Google Play with subsequent distribution in several countries was the final deliverable. The first impression matters a lot, and we needed to do our part to make it positive.

Our QA team was also tasked with creating the test documentation from scratch and updating it on time as we moved forward with the project.

RESULT

In about two months, we helped the PIXO team prepare for the release of Logo Maker Shop on Google Play. The result of our work can be seen in a decent overall ranking, the prevailing majority of five-star user reviews, and a growing number of installs. Logo Maker Shop is already enjoyed by 10K users, and we believe it will catch up with its iOS counterpart pretty fast.

Magic Mountain (London, United Kingdom): Social Fitness App Powered by Group Psychology refined before launch and continuously tested by QAwerk

NEED

Magic Mountain is a fitness app built on the idea of connecting and competing with friends, colleagues, and family to stay motivated.

Magic Mountain turned to QAwerk at a point when they were doing a massive redesign of their app to bring it from freemium to subscription-ready. As a startup, they were looking for someone who already has years of experience in testing mobile solutions and could bring that expertise to the table.

CHALLENGE

Our primary areas of focus were as follows:

1. Facebook-Grade Quality. QAwerk team was tasked to ensure no bugs travel to prod, and the app remains stable and fully functional after each update. Both dev and QA teams were aiming for a genuinely high-end product as a final result.

2. Seamless Sync with Wearables. The Magic Mountain app syncs to Apple Watch and Fitbit fitness trackers, which eases logging workouts for users. Our goal was to discover scenarios when the integration wouldn’t work as expected and lead to data loss or other inconveniences.

3. Multi-User Interaction. Creating team challenges is the app’s foundational and distinctive feature. So we needed to scrutinize every bit of this functionality to ensure all kinds of interactions between multiple users and different devices run like clockwork.

RESULT

We helped Magic Mountain grow from a simple freemium to a robust subscription-based app. By sharing our expertise and openly speaking about how we feel about the app from the user’s standpoint, we also contributed to improving certain feature implementations.

Startups

Arctype (Palo Alto, CA, United States): Collaborative SQL client and DB management tool continuously tested by QAwerk

NEED
As a successfully growing startup, Arctype felt the need to strengthen their development team with experienced QA engineers. They needed someone to follow the best practices and draw on their expertise to create new test cases. This way, developers won’t waste their time on software testing and instead will channel their energy toward feature development and bug fixing.

CHALLENGE
Arctype turned to QAwerk to help them ensure multiple monthly releases go smoothly and with the needed speed. We were expected to run test cases the same day the release was put out. Thanks to the difference in our time zones and overnight testing, it was possible that when Arctype developers log off, it’s daytime here in Ukraine and our QA engineers begin testing. The next day, Arctype developers have all bugs already logged in Jira to start bug fixing first thing in the morning.

RESULT
Here are the types of testing we regularly perform to achieve the desired quality: functional testing, integration testing, regression testing, automation testing, installation testing, smoke testing.

We are proud to know Arctype recognized our commitment to their success by steadily increasing our workload and delegating us more and more functions. What used to be 5 test runs per month is now performed by the QAwerk team weekly. We’ve significantly expanded the number of test cases, removed outdated ones, and detailed the existing ones.

Having witnessed how thorough we are with manual testing, Arctype also entrusted us with test automation. With our support, Arctype has gained confidence and stability in software releases, delivering new capabilities faster and more frequently.

Union54 (Lusaka, Zambia): Africa’s first card-issuing API fully tested and polished before a critical demo by QAwerk

"I just wanted to say a massive thank you to the QAwerk team. Valentin and Aliaksei have been doing a great job over the past few weeks - it goes above and beyond the call, given you work for QAwerk and not Union54. Our production release so far has been bug-free thanks to both of them, and Aliaksey is building a robust regression suite in Cypress. The team showed great teamwork and commitment, a pleasure to have you on board" - Jon Wade, CTO at Union54

NEED
We were responsible for timely testing of API endpoints as well as for development a stable test automation suite that is both comprehensive and easy to maintain and scale.

SOLUTION
To ensure sufficient test coverage from early development stages and meet the deadlines, we decided to combine test automation with manual testing. Such an allocation of resources allowed us to automate about 90% of test scenarios concerning endpoints and most essential database triggers. We tested API endpoints as they were being built, so our test plan included testing new features, integration, and regression testing.

RESULT
With our continuous support from early development, the Union54 team thoroughly tested and polished its product before the life-changing demo day. In about two months, we helped Union54 discover critical bugs and developed a robust automated regression suite to spot similar issues before they travel to prod.

The result of our fruitful cooperation is spectacular: Union54 received $3 mln in seed funding soon after graduating from Y Combinator. The Union54 API is currently explored by over 50 African fintech companies and keeps raising interest among investors worldwide.

Education

Keystone (Fornebu, Norway): Higher education search portal with 110 mln annual visits comprehensively tested by QAwerk

"We started the cooperation by deciding on testing priorities: devices and OSs popular among users, the highest priority domains for testing, and the most crucial user flows, which should always run smoothly. We also created a Slack channel where all our requirements towards tests were discussed. Since then, the tests have been conducted by QAwerk periodically and thoroughly. Any changes to the initial plan can be communicated through Slack and will be addressed immediately" - Eryk Basta, Product Manager at Keystone Academic Solutions

Unfold (New York, NY, USA): Storytelling platform loved by 1 BLN users tested by QAwerk and acquired by Squarespace

"The QA team has been a great help for the release of our new offering, Unfold for Brands. The team has really put themselves in the place of the user to find any bugs or user experience issues, mitigating any potential issues at launch" - Alfonso Cobo, Head of Unfold at Squarespace

NEED
Our major task was to test Android and iOS versions on all possible devices to make the Unfold app crash-proof and flawless. We worked with pretty tight deadlines, so to release the product updates by the set date, our QA engineers were ready to work extra hours as well as test on weekends, showing utmost responsibility, flexibility, and true commitment to the app’s success.

SOLUTION
Since Unfold’s customer base is growing day by day, we performed compatibility and cross-platform testing to allow everyone interested in the app to enjoy its benefits. As the finishing touch, we did user acceptance testing to fully polish the product. We tested the Unfold app on seven iOS Devices with iOS 10-13 versions and eight Android devices with Android 5-10 versions. All the testing was done on real devices to achieve maximum precision in results.

RESULT
With the Unfold development team and QAwerk engineers’ joint effort, the app has gained a new look and a new feel, attracting millions of users around the globe. Our team was given sufficient flexibility and independence, which allowed QAwerk testers to be fully engaged in the project and thus contribute to enhancing the product. Apart from receiving an increased number of positive reviews in the App Store and Google Play, Unfold got acquired by Squarespace, one of the leading SaaS-based CMSs worldwide

Station (Paris, France): Productivity app with 600+ integrations tested by QAwerk

"We've worked with QAwerk to handle the QA of our native desktop app. They've done a tremendous job and even went out of their way to ensure the quality of the app. We'll continue working with them in the future" - Julien Berthomier, CEO & Co-founder at Station

NEED
Due to regular updates and fast functionality extensions, the app required regular quality assurance. Since the application had to be tested in a short time, within one-two days, it was a challenge for us to catch all bugs, especially when the number of test cases has skyrocketed with the addition of new app integrations. However, with every new test run, we proved that nothing is impossible for our experienced team, so we managed to cope with the assignments in time. We are proud that our client highly appreciated our efforts.

SOLUTION
Regression testing was performed to find and report errors that were affecting the existing features. When running test cases, we made sure that fixing some of the previously reported bugs did not cause others to occur and that every new build was stable. With all new test cases written by our team, the original 22 test cases grew to 541 test cases and counting. We managed to complete the full regression testing within no more than two working days, even considering the numerous test cases we had to go through.

RESULT
Using our hands-on experience in working on projects with tight deadlines, our QA engineers performed full regression testing within the set timeframe. We helped Station discover several critical bugs that required immediate attention as well as malfunctions of minor severity. Since Station keeps working on improving its product, we work with them on an ongoing basis to preserve the app’s functionality regardless of the frequent updates.

Unpakt (NY, United States): Online Marketplace Changing the Way People Move, tested by QAwerk

NEED

Unpakt came to the QAwerk team for assistance with manual testing. They had releases each month and needed a reliable QA partner to test new features. A bit later, they decided to switch from Angular to React; as a result, regression testing of main features was needed both on desktop and mobile devices. Our primary tasks were to maintain the desktop and mobile versions of the app and assist in smooth transitioning from one technology to another.

BUGS FOUND

The majority of the bugs we found concerned the website adaptation to mobile screens, incorrect work of the calendar elements, inventory items, and visual look of text input fields. Additionally, we encountered a sufficient number of defects related to the work of servers during the entire testing process.

RESULT

Manual testing of the Unpakt platform allowed us to detect all functional and non-functional issues both in the web and mobile versions and fix them before a new release. We are proud of contributing to the project that is among the most popular moving services in the USA, and that continually grows and expands its features.

Zazu (Lusaka, Zambia): #1 finance management app in Africa tested by QAwerk and recognized by Mastercard

"The team is really supportive, and they are nice people, it's always nice to work with such people. They are really effective at what they do" - Sassoon Scheepers, Business Analyst at Zazu

NEED
Having a team of developers, Zazu could cover all unit testing; however, they were looking for someone to perform user acceptance testing (UAT) and regression testing of iOS and Android apps. Additionally, there was a request to test their back-end admin interface, also referred to as Customer Service Interface (CSI).

SOLUTION
During our collaboration, 99 test cases were written for the iOS/Android app and 55 test cases for CSI. Some of the test cases were updated several times as long as changes in UI/UX occurred or new features were implemented. The main types of testing we used were acceptance testing and regression testing, but during the project, we also performed UI/UX testing, smoke testing, and exploratory testing.

RESULT
The testing of the Zazu app lasted for several months until both of us were sure that all test cases are written, all bugs are found and fixed. Later on, we were happy to receive new requests from clients to update the test cases and perform regression testing as new features were developed and UI was changed. We are excited to see that Zazu continues to grow, and we are proud to be a part of its success.

Review Summary

We have a specialty/niche product that needs a significant time for on-boarding normally. QAWerk was willing and able to do the on-boarding and work on the rather complex testing setup. There were some initial hiccups with the technical setup, largely owing to our specialty configuration, but the testing team was patient and willing to work with us on tackling the issues. The flexibility alongside the good technical work has become a staple of this product's testing.

Review Summary

QAwerk was as professional as a remote contracting agency could be. Tasks taken on would be completed as promised 95+% of the time. When they were not, they would come to the next daily meeting with a list of questions to deal with any blockers that were hit in the task. If there was any drawback, I needed them to slow down a little bit and not try to be so aggressive with tasks. Attention to detail was more important than raw speed in completing tasks for us, and we were willing to pay for that. So it was common to have some back and forth where we'd review the work and have it updated, but it was reasonable given the amount of work they took on.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

They were dealing with some turnover that caused us to have to ramp new folks up often. Need better consultant retention.
