Redwerk Executive Interview

Konstantin Klyagin
CEO and Founder
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
Redwerk is a full-cycle software product development agency. Since 2005 we have been helping companies worldwide design, develop, enhance and test their products. Having started with a team of 3, now our headcount is close to 60.

In a nutshell, what we do can be described as "Software as a Service as a service". We specialize in a vast majority of modern software solutions which are SaaS or PaaS. A typical SaaS solution consists of a backend with database and business logic, a web frontend (normally responsive), mobile apps and sometimes also of an API for 3rd party developers.

I am the Founder and the CEO of the company. I learn new skills and design processes to delegate them to others, who are better at them than I am. My background is software engineering and before establishing Redwerk, I have played various roles in the software development industry like C++ developer, team leader, architect, project manager, product owner and technical writer. My interest in computers started at a very young age. I was 6 years old when I first saw a computer and 8 when I wrote my first program.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
The initial idea was to build a one-stop shop that can address every phase of a software development lifecycle: business analysis, functional and tech specification, UI/UX design and visuals, development, testing, deployment, maintenance and support. That’s why we’re not only a team of developers, but also QA engineers, DevOps, UI/UX and graphic designers, project managers and business analysts. Our customers appreciate the fact that everything is done in-house, without the need to employ multiple agencies and coordinate work between them.
What are your company’s business model in-house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
All the work is done by full-time employees of Redwerk in our two R&D centers in Ukraine. We do not use any external resources nor do we work with freelancers. Also, we do not outstaff. If you’re looking to screen and hire individual developers, hiring an agency for that is a huge overhead. What we do is manage teams, and take care of the entire process, including resource selection and also of replacements. Basically, providing managed teams where communication, planning, deadlines, as well as QA and code reviews are taken care of internally.
How is your business model beneficial from a value-added perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
In our typical managed team setup, communication is streamlined through a PM/BA from our side and the developers’ work is tested by a QA person. Our UI/UX team can also assist with new screens and flows. DevOps are to be called for on demand. Involving additional resources is flexible and our customers only pay for the actual hours we worked on their projects. On-demand usage lets reduce costs dramatically compared to outsourcing or outstaffing each role full-time. On top of that, our rates for all of these roles are very moderate compared to Europe and North America as our R&D is located in Ukraine, a country which is known for its engineering talent and education.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
When we started back in 2005, we had two customers: a leading vendor of e-government solutions in Benelux, and an electronics manufacturer, whose parts were used in the NASA Sprit and Opportunity mission to Mars.

I like to say that technology is something you can apply both in a church and in a brothel. It’s pretty much the same stack, be it web, mobile, machine learning or AI. Specializing in technology, in the later years we extended our industry knowledge to media and entertainment with US customers. We also helped one of our clients to take care of their legacy products through data mining. Recently, we worked on machine learning for a venture capital fund organization that wanted to shorten their decision-making time on loans with the help of AI. I’m really happy that most of our customers recommend us to their partners and bring us into their new companies when they switch jobs. Considering this repetitive, I would say that we get about 70% of business through word of mouth.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
For proper expectations management, before starting any project, we provide our customers with a detailed offer indicating the budget range and the delivery timeframe. Like in any software project, the detail level of the specification is the decisive parameter. Even in an agile process, you cannot start building the first prototype with too many unknowns. That’s why requirements check is a must. If they’re too broad or vague, it’s important to establish the functionality. For a mobile app, the best way to describe the functionality is a set of wireframes that clarifies its flow and business logic. If that’s unavailable, as a full-cycle agency, Redwerk offers prototyping and functional specification writing service. Together with the customer, this discovery effort up to a week for an average application introduces much more clarity and confidence when assessing the development effort and delivery timeline.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
It’s tricky to generalize on this question because it depends on how much overall business logic resides on frontend vs backend. For example, if it’s a casual game, of course, 90% to 100% of the effort is the mobile app itself. However, an app like the one managing table bookings for restaurant owners, where the frontend only visualizes the data from the server and submits changes back via the API, the effort distribution is 20% frontend vs 80% backend.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
While a lot has been achieved to make app development easier, from Titanium Appcelerator to Xamarin and React Native, the outcome is that it’s still easier to find developers with native skills. One of the main questions you need to answer when choosing a technology is: How easy is it to find a developer with the required skillset? While bringing web technology mobile was supposed to extend the army of the mobile developer, in reality, it requires knowledge of both web and a mobile stack of technologies, making it more difficult to find required talent. However, for games and graphics apps, Unity is an option to consider.
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
Nowadays choosing a store is more a business decision than that of technology. If the app itself is value, iOS App Store is better for selling the app or in-app purchases. By far people shop more there compared to Google Play. Selling a casual game or premium content? Post it on App Store and get more buys. However, if user outreach is the goal, Android userbase is bigger. It is the case when the app is a gateway to the value, which is not only available mobile. Consider an internet banking client app. Special cases are when your main target audience is users of a specific platform. For instance, if you’re selling drones and your research says most of your users are on iOS, you may want to start with this platform and then extend to Android.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
Cross-platform and WYSIWYG tools are great for prototyping or creating small apps that visualize the data coming from the backend. Problems begin when you try to do something the platform authors haven’t thought of. I saw cases when workarounds for platform limitations were equal or more significant in effort than re-writing the entire application natively. This is not just my observation. Earlier this year in June Airbnb announced it would be dropping React Native, whose development it was investing heavily into. Among the reasons, there were both the framework immaturity and three environments expertise their mobile developers had to possess. Airbnb switched entirely to native apps for both iOS and Android.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
As we work on a time and materials basis, for us hourly figures are the main factor that influences the cost of any software. We usually break down a project into smaller, more chewable chunks (functionalities, screens, parts of business logic) and give them two hourly figures: optimistic and pessimistic. Once all estimates have been collected, we sum them together and multiply by our hourly rate. The result is the cost of the project. Speaking of a typical mobile application, the factors to take into account are: the number of screens, external API and payment system integrations, push notifications, and non-standard UI controls.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We work on a time and materials basis, where the cost is driven by the amount of development, testing, design and project management hours. We only bill for the hours we work on the customer’s project, logging them daily into our issue-tracker for better transparency. Our customers have access to our tracker, where they can log in anytime to see how many hours have been spent today, this month or overall. If during the development phase there is scope creep, our project managers are instructed to pro-actively notify the customer about a possible increase in the resulting man-hours due to newly requested functionality addition or update. Our billing frequency is monthly, so at the end of each month we send out invoices based on the amount of logged hours.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Our sales team is instructed that the minimum budget requirement is the price of 100 man-hours. However, you shouldn’t neglect minor projects. Sometimes accepting a small project can lead to huge opportunities, making your business great again.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2018?
Many of our projects have no end. A modern software as a service product can only survive by continually adapting to the needs of its customers, A/B testing and improving its functionality. Through managerial decisions, projects can be moved in-house for customer’s own developers to continue. In this case, proper documentation and hand-off effort are undertaken. Another possibility is that an active development phase has been done and the project goes into UAT mode, where we only do maintenance as little as 20-40 hours per month until further decisions are made. Our duty is to assure its stability while adding no major features. On the low end, there was an $8,000 e-commerce website update that we did for a customer in the United Arab Emirates.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
The business model should be closely related to the idea of the application. While free with in-app purchases is a good option for premium content apps and for games with virtual goods. An advertisement is better for social applications, where ads can be seamlessly blended into the flow.
Kindly share your feedback on how GoodFirms has been doing so far in increasing your visibility among potential clients.
GoodFirms has been doing a great job contacting our customers for reviews on time and keeping a close eye on Redwerk’s progress, treating us with various achievements. My marketing team loves you for that. We got some leads through the listing on your site as well.

Orderstep (Ballerup, Denmark): Top quote management and customer flow SaaS in the Nordics extended and made feature-rich by Redwerk "Ukrainians are very dedicated people. No matter where they are or what's happening around them, they will deliver what they promised. Looking at how it can be done with smaller projects, I'm very confident that Redwerk would also work if you had a bigger project with more complicated requirements" - Lars Olafsson, Founding Partner at Orderstep NEED They wanted to extend the Orderstep customer portal with personal webshops so that their customers could not only improve quote management and customer flow at every touchpoint but also sell their products on the same platform. Orderstep asked the Redwerk team to develop the frontend part of the webshop functionality. Here are some of the requirements we were expected to meet framework-free solution, flexibility, documentation. SOLUTION React is a go-to framework for building a SPA. While we couldnt use frameworks because of the backend peculiarities, we still wanted the webshop to have some of the SPA benefits. Thats why we offered to use React for interactive parts of the online store, whereas static pages were frameworkless. The UI we developed includes a product gallery, detailed product page, fields for customizing the items color, number and other characteristics before adding the product to the cart, the shopping cart itself, and checkout. RESULT During our partnership, Orderstep increased not only the number of new features on their platform but also significantly grew the number of unique monthly visitors. In 2022, over 12K invoices were sent via their platform. Orderstep is also trusted by well-established companies that close 150 mln DKK deals. Were proud to have contributed to the growth of such a high-impact and revenue-generating product. Learn more: https://redwerk.com/case-studies/orderstep/

Redwerk (Kyiv, Ukraine): Handy Telegram Bot for Jira ideated and developed by Redwerk from the ground up.

“My teammates and I use MyJiraBot to stay up to date with the project updates. Unlike email, MyJiraBot sends Jira notifications momentarily, with no delays. I also use the bot when I’m away from my laptop, which allows me to monitor the latest events no matter where I am” – Kristina, Project Manager at Redwerk

NEED

Our major aim was to develop a handy Telegram bot for Jira that would help project managers and other team members stay updated wherever they are, discuss Jira tickets within one interface, and collaborate in group chats.

SOLUTION

All of the MyJiraBot commands revolve around three main functionalities active Jira users rely on day-to-day:

  • Retrieve Data from Jira. Type /listunresolved to receive all unresolved tickets assigned to you, a specific user, or the entire project. The /liststatus command allows viewing all tickets, whether yours, someone else’s, or related to the project, with the chosen status.

  • Receive Notifications from Jira. Here we have one primary command, which is /watch. The latter allows users to get notifications every time they are tagged in a comment, assigned a new ticket, or their existing ticket was updated

  • Schedule Jira Reports. The /schedule command automates data retrieval based on personal preferences with daily, weekly, or monthly reports.

RESULT

Born out of the need to improve internal workflows, MyJiraBot is now actively used by over 50 businesses. MyJiraBot is easy to set up, offers unique features, and supports personal and group chats. Our Telegram chatbot for Jira gives real-time visibility into your workload and project progress and brings discussions of work-related issues into one space.

My Bike Valet (Sommerville, MA, United States): Intelligent Bike Parking System developed by Redwerk from the ground up

"Having worked with many external service providers in my professional life so far, I can clearly say that Redwerk comes out on top. Redwerk’s customer-facing team is very professional, and besides that, it’s also fun to work with" - Walter Zahn, Founder of My Bike Valet

NEED
Our task here was to finalize the requirements before initiating fully-fledged development and factor in possible adjustments while keeping the cost of change low. Another milestone on our roadmap concerned building the architecture for Android and iOS MVPs. At this point, our primary goal was to lay the ground for essential functionalities while keeping the app scalable as more features are to come in the future.

SOLUTION
Our client was looking for an open-source and cost-effective solution for backend development. We selected .NET Core Framework as a powerful, open-source, and cross-platform framework for building modern, cloud-based web apps on Windows, macOS, or Linux. As for mobile apps, we advocate for native development as it allows us to guarantee great speed, performance, and UX. Native mobile development is also the right fit for apps with broad functionality, and our goal was to deliver an app with upcoming features in mind.

RESULT
The software we delivered complements the complex engineering My Bike Valet invested in to build a secure, convenient, and reliable bike parking system. With native iOS and Android apps, My Bike Valet users can receive an all-around experience, feeling prepared and having peace of mind when it comes to bike parking. We are immensely proud to have contributed to a solution that promotes a healthy lifestyle and brings awareness about sustainable traveling.

AWE Learning (Chester, PA, United States): E-Learning SaaS Used by 50% of US Public Libraries developed by Redwerk from the ground up

"The development/ IT teams at Redwerk were amazing to work with. They are highly skilled, quite professional, and passionate about their work. They helped us build Platinum Online, a cloud-based version of our All-in-One Early Literacy Station, in record time. I highly recommend them as an off-shore developer and look forward to working with the team on our next project" - Deborah B. Sorgi, President and Chief Executive Officer at AWE Learning

NEED
AWE Learning turned to Redwerk to help them build a SaaS platform for young learners, ages 2-12, from the ground up. They wanted to make their educational resources that were previously hosted through proprietary workstations installed in public libraries accessible to a broader community.

Our major task was to take the AWE Learning Early Literacy Station to the cloud and extend it with must-have SaaS features like reporting, role-based access, subscription and content management.

SOLUTION
We developed the whole platform from the ground up, including the designs for each of the STREAM areas, new icons and avatars. While the SaaS has a neutral cartoonish design, the app for touchscreen devices has a distinct emphasis on inclusivity, depicting children of different ethnicities, skin colors, and children with disabilities.

RESULT
AWE Learning Platinum Online is a one-of-a-kind e-learning solution that mirrors years of early education experience in a modern tech platform. We are immensely proud to have helped AWE Learning equip 50% of public libraries in the US and broader parent communities worldwide with a handy addition to homeschool and micro-school curriculums.

NEED
Our biggest challenge was to build a fully-functioning product with robust functionality that can be easily customized to the needs of government agencies across the USA. Realizing how ground-breaking this solution can potentially be, we felt immense responsibility to deliver the highest quality app within the set timeframe. We were inspired by C!A’s mission to impact the lives of millions of people dependent on various state-administered programs and took on the challenge.

KB&G (Dunedin, New Zealand): #1 automated smart pricing solution worldwide built by Redwerk from the ground up

"I have nothing but great things to say. The quality of work is great, it’s very very fast and the team always come up with suggestions on how to improve things" - Barry Hudson, Co-Founder and CEO at KB&G

NEED
KB&G needed someone who would be ready to fully immerse into the industry specifics, do a lot of math, and write tons of algorithms to select the most suitable ones. On top of that, we were expected to develop a solution that would assure data communication between KB&G’s innovative product and their clients’ legacy systems, often lacking proper documentation.

SOLUTION
Automated smart pricing is a SaaS product designed by construction materials experts for construction materials companies. It’s a robust web app that can be further enhanced and customized to suit KB&G clients’ needs. Its functionality cannot be condensed to one case study, but here are some of the modules we have successfully implemented:

  • Quote Generation
  • Pricing Tiers
  • Competitors View
  • Heat Maps
  • Data Import & Export

We also built a mobile version of the automated smart pricing app for sales managers to be able to generate quotes on the go.

RESULT
The outcome of our close partnership with KB&G is a modern, scalable, and easily maintainable solution helping construction materials companies achieve sustainable revenue growth. It perfectly complements KB&G’s long-standing consultancy expertise, allowing them to stay at the forefront of the competition and continue to be the industry pioneers and change agents. Mass Movement (Foxboro, MA, United States): Solution for Clear-Cut Fitness Logistics, developed by Redwerk from the ground up

"All software you did was amazing! If we ever decide to create any custom software development, it's going to be Redwerk. I have already recommended you to all of my colleagues." - Chris DiStefano, Operations Officer & National Account Manager at Mass Movement

CHALLENGE
Mass Movement came to Redwerk with one big challenge – to build a custom IMS that would be a perfect fit for their current workflow. To implement such a system, we had to dive deep under the hood of Mass Movement’s internal work processes, so that we clearly understood the logic and value behind every feature we develop.

OpenTeams (Austin, TX, USA): B2B Marketplace Making Open Source Thrive, refactored and further developed by Redwerk

"I really enjoyed it, I think that the team worked really well together. They were diligent and considering not just what I had asked for but what we were trying to accomplish with the product." - David Charboneau, CTO at OpenTeams

CHALLENGE
OpenTeams turned to us with the idea of further developing and enhancing a web product dedicated to open source, and we joined forces to bring this bold idea to life. The challenging part was that OpenTeams had a vision for the platform, but clear specifications were missing. Another challenging task was to implement the possibility to engage unregistered users which required quite a complex logic in implementation.

SOLUTION
We built on the existing idea and performed code refactoring and website redesign to make the OpenTeams platform fast, modern, and SEO-friendly. With our assistance, OpenTeams has gained an improved functionality and appealing visual representation.

RESULT
With Redwerk’s effort, the OpenTeams community keeps growing and sharing the experience of working with open source. It covers more than 20.000 users, and we are happy to be among them.

Fanmetrix (Montreal, QC, Canada): Interactive Platform for Hockey Fans, conceptualized by Redwerk

CHALLENGE
Fanmetrix decided to arrange a design contest and invited us to participate in it. The entire project was in the early initiation stage; therefore, specifications for product visuals were not fully worked out. Although we know that lack of specific design requirements is rather a challenge than an advantage because there is always a risk of miscommunication.

SOLUTION
We took the time to conduct thorough research on the product and its target audience to better understand the platform’s mission and its possible functionality. We carefully studied all the resources that hockey fans use to include the features they really need. We created two different versions of the landing page – one with a more serious appeal and the other with trendy 2D illustrations. While creating the landing page designs, we relied mostly on Fanmetrix’s brand style, yet we slightly expanded their existing palette with some extra colors. We used those colors that are commonly used in hockey and related platforms and that are usually implemented in masculine themes.

RESULT
Our desire to win the contest coupled with the professionalism of our design team brought the needed result – the victory was ours. The Redwerk team continued cooperation with Fanmetrix and created multiple design versions for almost every page on their website. We also compiled a comprehensive style guide for Fanmetrix to use in their brand awareness campaigns.

BengalFox (Oakland Park, FL, United States): Solution for Warehouse Efficiency, developed by Redwerk from the ground up

"Redwerk helped us create an internal app from ground 0 from the app logo, home screen, login capability all the way to the finished product. They continually help us with updates and immediately respond to us if we have questions or notes for changes we want to make." - Justin Avery, Shipping Manager at BengalFox

CHALLENGE

BengalFox needed a solution to optimize its shipping operations by cutting down monotonous and repetitive tasks of warehouse employees. Our major challenge was reducing the time needed to process one order to an absolute minimum; otherwise, the app would defeat its purpose.

SOLUTION
Redwerk helped BengalFox streamline its shipping operations by building a handy app for warehouse employees. We carefully thought through every step of the user flow, which allowed us to reach the desired speed of the app, cover all possible non-standard cases, and implement intuitive UI.

RESULT
BengalFox employees now process orders in a much more convenient way. We achieved 3 seconds duration of a standard user flow, reducing the time and effort spent on the manual processing of each order.

Cakemail (Montreal, Canada): Solution for Efficient Email Marketing, enhanced by Redwerk

“My team worked with Redwerk as we needed to push to produce our new software quicker than our resources permitted. Their team was quick and reliable, always communicating clearly when something was missing or needed more information. They molded their way of working around ours in order to facilitate production and communication even though we were not in the same time zone and they felt like they were part of the internal team. The team of developers we worked with was exceptional and listened to our every need. Would definitely work with them again in the future when we have new projects to deliver quickly.” - Yanna-Torry Aspraki, Project Manager at Cakemail

CHALLENGE
Cakemail asked us to redo the frontend part of Forms to align this section with the rest of the upgrades applied to the Cakemail v5 app. Cakemail had completely changed their Contacts module, which affected the way users captured their contacts through online subscription forms. As a result, the original Forms section no longer worked with new Contacts; therefore, it required a brand new code. Apart from working with the tight deadline, we also had to prepare the frontend without the backend because it was not ready when we started.

SOLUTION
Our main task was to replace the old Forms section that had limited functionality with new Forms built with React so that all features of the Cakemail v5 app worked in sync. First things first, we performed precise sprint planning, which allowed us to minimize any deadline risks. We used mock objects agreed with the client’s backend team to ensure further backend-frontend compatibility.

RESULT
We managed to deliver the project on time. With our assistance, Cakemail can complete the transition from Cakemail v4 to Cakemail v5 without compromising the app’s functionality.

Freenet (NY, USA): Open Source Solution for Anonymity Online, enhanced by Redwerk working closely with the core team

“Redwerk improved the styles of our main theme. It now works much better for small devices like phones. Thanks to Redwerk, Freenet 0.7.5 build 1485 adds checking for Ogg Theora video files and Freenet can now display video safely. There is also a "Send confidential message" button on the friends page, so these messages are no longer hidden in a dropdown list. Also thanks to Redwerk, Freemail_wot is updated to v0.2.7.4 with better detection of contacts missing from WoT.” - Arne Babenhauserheide, Freenet Development Team

NEED
Freenet was the first to apply the P2P approach to Internet anonymity, designed with a mission to ensure freedom on the Internet. When Redwerk was offered to contribute to the project development, we were eager to pitch in. We took over part of software upgrade, maintenance, QA, and user support tasks to relieve the workload of the Freenet core development team. Overall, our major goal was to improve Freenet software making it faster and easier to use.

EXECUTION
The main functionality of the project is written in Java and we were glad to apply our expertise. When we started studying the project, we focused on its core, which is Fred (Freenet REference Daemon). It’s the most important part of the software, without which Freenet forums, plugins, and mail would not exist. We also worked on improving the functionality of Freenet’s plugins such as KeepAlive, Library, and Freemail. We managed to enhance the overall software quality and upgrade the plugins that were of special interest to our sponsor.

RESULT
Redwerk helped Freenet enhance its core features and make several plugins fully functional again. All the improvements we have made are essential for retaining existing users, attracting new participants, and spreading the word about the platform and its purpose.

M3 Glass Technologies (Texas, USA) - M3 Glass Product Customization Tool, designed and implemented by Redwerk

CHALLENGE
M3 Glass Technologies came to us with the idea of implementing an interactive design tool that would allow customers to visualize the look of their space after applying the desired glass designs. One of the main requirements was to make the design responsive, focusing on a large Mac, the latest versions of iOS and Android tablets, and a regular laptop. Of course, we wanted to make the interactive tool mobile-friendly as well. We also had to make sure that all the patterns look neat in different versions of the following browsers: Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox.

EXECUTION
The design team created separate 3D images of a glass wall and floor so that later the patterns from the client’s menu could be superimposed on these transparent backgrounds. M3 Glass provided us with the patterns catalog, and our part was to enable the transfer of the pattern onto the glass model with the help of HTML and CSS. We also had to consider the image perspective for the glass design to look realistic. To make the graphics perfect regardless of the transformation, we used the SVG format. On top of that, our designers created an interface for the interactive tool so that M3 Glass consumers could easily visualize their glass-design ideas and customize the available pattern to their liking.

RESULT
The product we developed allows customers to experiment with the selection of patterns for their glass floors, walls, commercial or private spaces. Now, this interactive tool is an important part of the website as it catches consumers’ attention. While M3 Glass clients enjoy their artistic freedom, the company reaps the benefits of increased user engagement that, in turn, drives sales.

Searchturbo (Berlin, Germany) - Lighting fast mobile browser with advanced Omnibox, developed by Redwerk

“Redwerk helped us scale our mobile development resources and deliver successful android projects. I found them to have the skillset and ability to understand what our needs were - both business and technical - to support us in delivering a complex application. The team was always proactive with questions and issues and put in every effort to provide a high-quality product. I can highly recommend Redwerk to hire for web and mobile software development if you need reliable and professional development.” - Michael Boecher, Co-Founder & COO, SearchTurbo Ltd

CHALLENGE
Searchturbo came to us having an idea of an advanced mobile browser and tasked Redwerk with creating an Android application. The main idea was to create the most accessible and sharing-oriented mobile surfing experience for Android. One of the biggest challenges was to optimize and improve build assembling, as the size of the source code exceeded 30 GB and took hours to compile when we just started.

SOLUTION
First of all, we added cache and wrote bach-scripts to accelerate and partly automate version assembling. After that, we created our own git-flow to simplify working with Chromium, and resolve conflicts faster. As to the visible part of the app, the bottom Omnibox got all the possible features for comfortable usage. The main app screen got three tabs – Start Page, Search History and Favorites. Start screen in its turn offers users weather, news and a daily selection of videos available for over 18 languages.

RESULT
Start app has been installed over 100 000 times, getting numerous positive reviews. Unlike most browsers in Google Play, Start doesn’t drain your memory or battery and offers smooth, comfortable browsing with controls right on your fingertips. Our mobile app development company is proud of those achievements.

SpamHound (Germany): Spam-blocking app featured at Collision ideated & developed from scratch by Redwerk

NEED

Redwerk has several in-house mobile applications on its account and dozens created for our clients worldwide. To be on a trendy wave of app development we always advance our knowledge of new technologies and abilities of mobile platforms.

The idea of our next pet project appeared when Apple showed iOS 11 early beta with spam filtering functionality. As almost every person who has a phone receives lots of annoying spam messages from services you never subscribed to, our iPhone software development specialists decided to dig a bit deeper and use the shiny new options of iOS for Redwerk’s next app.

But it wouldn’t be us if we didn’t research all the opportunities the functionality offers and then port it to Android.

CHALLENGE

The main challenge for our team was to create a tool that helps to protect from spammers, which usually are telemarketers, taxis, shops, and effectively blocks messages from them, with flexible filtering rules & settings.

In the development process of both iOS and Android apps, we dealt with:

  • Database structure
  • Multiple filtering
  • Filter overlapping
  • Back-ups storage

RESULT

We’ve done a great job on the way to launch SpamHound to App Store and Play Market. Both applications reached their audience and now protect people all over the world from annoying spam.

Furthermore, SpamHound was presented at Collision’18 conference in New Orleans as Alpha startup and reached many positive reviews! After the success of SpamHound, we understood that there are also many other spheres where antispam protection is needed and decided to create SpamHound’s successor – CallHound Unwanted Call Blocker to overcome unwanted and spam calls.

Quandoo (Berlin, Germany): iOS app for restaurant management SaaS built by Redwerk from the ground up and used by 18K+ restaurants

NEED

In the beginning, we had to create a handy and helpful application with a minimum viable set of functions (MVP). It had to provide users with a suitable interface packed with various instruments to observe and gather the stats on particular reservations and overall attendance at their restaurants.

CHALLENGE

Together with Quandoo team, our software developing company decided to create a native application for iOS platform, as it offered better stability and performance than a cross-platform solution. The logic of the app was separated: one part was responsible for all the things server, and the other one was dedicated to front-end or interface. Server side was built on a platform belonging to Quandoo company, which we have modified for the needs of the application. All front-end was created from the ground-up.

Besides the development, we also worked with the UI/UX part of the project. Our team thrived to create the design that can be utilized easily by both new and existing users of Quandoo solutions. We also ensured the compliance with style guidelines and general principles of the brand.

RESULT

During the time of our partnership, we have succeeded in assembling a cooperative team and optimized all project management and development processes. Due to our productive teamwork and lingering experience in custom iPhone app development, we were fully able to deliver a quality product within the deadline.

Redwerk team has successfully delivered a fully functional app for Quandoo. Now, this app helps with management of over 18,000 restaurants around the globe.

CDP Blitz (Canada): Media directory hosting over 35K contacts optimized by Redwerk in terms of database and functionality

NEED

The main challenge was to migrate the old data into the new system. On the one hand, we wanted to structure and optimize the existing database.

CHALLENGE

Redwerk was involved in all spheres of this major product update: we created a new improved UX design, extended the existing website functionality, and created the new admin panel for data management. We also integrated the MediaMatch API — a proprietary service that enables advanced media monitoring relevant to the users of CDPBlitz.

We’ve also implemented an online payment system using Stripe allowing customers to switch from using a manual invoice and cheque payment system, handling subscription payments and renewals online.

RESULT

The upgraded website has a new, modern look with improved UX and a significant performance boost. On the backend, the new code is well documented and Swagger is used for API. The database contains a large number of media contacts with up-to-date valid information, flexibility to capture new media types and new ways to contact media outlets.

As a Python development company, Redwerk team created pure code on the server side that allows users to navigate the database of over 35 000 contacts, using advanced search options and benefiting from flexible filter settings and effortless online payments. And media representatives across the country, in turn, can be easily reached with news relevant to their outlets.

Caesium is a startup freelance marketplace that helps clients, individuals, and teams to find each other and work on joint projects.

Caesium was built with Laravel, Postgres and Firebase at the backend and Angular and SCSS at the frontend, so we continued to use these technologies for further development. As a prominent JavaScript development company, Redwerk used Angular to provide dynamic elements of the app interface. During the working process, we continued the development of the product and even fixed several functions that did not work correctly according to the design.

Our team also faced the issue with SEO abilities of pages that are loaded by JavaScript. It was because Google’s crawler does not process elements in Angular, so we found the way to solve it by using a proxy server that goes through the page content, make the HTML copy and displays static copies of the pages to Googlebot.

PlusPlus is the entertaining chatbot written for Slack. It allows scoring things your friends say and do on Slack by addressing to objects and users with ‘@’. It has a global leaderboard and every action influences the overall results.

The task for Redwerk team was to completely rewrite the bot, originally made in Python, by using Ruby as the core technology. The challenge was also to increase stability, make it possible to scale and optimize the overall performance of this high load project.

When the infrastructure was planned, we based our assumptions about the load on the average statistics of old Python bot usage: approx. 500-700 thousand user actions per minute. Our team extended this load level up to ~1 million user actions/minute in order to have some extra capacity and provided a set of tests on staging. And suddenly it turned out that Slack limits testing to 1 message per second and doesn’t have the functionality to test high load projects. The actual live load of PlusPlus performed over 20-50 million actions per minute, so the existing infrastructure couldn’t support it. In order to resolve these issues, Redwerk team developed functionality that uses multiple CPU cores on each server, along with a specific Bot Manager, which routes each bot to a specific node (Server + CPU core).

We also switched from Ubuntu to CentOS. CentOS in its turn provided a more stable environment while working with MongoDB and supported the excessive action load.

Incling specializes in building online communities to solve marketing, innovation and communication challenges. Incling came to Redwerk with a developed Java applet for screencast recording, which needed to be upgraded to a cross-platform standalone app.

At Redwerk, we like to keep our builds automated and our code clean and minimalistic – fewer lines means fewer bugs. Therefore, our obvious first step after a detailed code review was to implement Gradle-based build scripts and use Maven repos to fetch dependencies. With just a few hours’ cleanup, we were able to shrink the code base by almost 15,000 lines. This also allowed us to execute the entire build process with a single console command.

After the initial setup, our Java developers began work on creating the application, writing installation scripts, and fixing the translation infrastructure, all simultaneously. As the applet was already written in Java, it took almost no time at all to retool the existing code into a standalone application. We wrote our package and installer scripts using NSIS, launch4j, fpm, pkgbuild, and packr. Our solution automatically installs Java on the user’s machine if necessary and registers a custom URI handler which lets users launch the application by clicking a link on the web page.

We also implemented a way to seamlessly deliver version updates to users: whenever a user starts a new screencast, the app communicates with the backend to check if there are any updates available and updates itself in the background if necessary.

EUREL was founded in Rome in 1986 by a group of electronic and computer engineers with the aim of creating computer systems for the Public Administration.

Redwerk, as a software development outsourcing company, was assigned the task of upgrading part of the EUREL EUGI platform used by the European Parliament, taking care of integration, quality assurance, deployment, and bug fixing. The scope of the project was to migrate a legacy JBoss-based application to a modern, easy-to-maintain Spring/Tomcat-based one.

  • Thanks to our extensive experience in Java EE and Spring development, we were able to quickly decompose our work into smaller subtasks and plan further actions. This allowed us to easily coordinate work and manage EUREL expectations while keeping things organized.
  • At the very start of the project, we established efficient lines of communication between all involved parties across the globe. People in Ukraine, Italy, and Belgium were coordinated and aware of current progress and challenges at all times. We also moved task and issue tracking from email and instant messaging to modern bug tracking software for easy management.
  • One of the first things we did was set up a testing environment in our office. Developers made use of integration and unit tests to ensure that business logic and APIs functioned according to the EUREL project design.
  • We also organized a workflow where code could be written in Ukraine and tested in Brussels the same day, allowing developers to receive instant feedback from future system users.

These measures allowed us to deliver a high-quality project, on schedule and fully tested, in spite of the limitations and constraints we faced.

We also proved once again that the option to outsource Java development to Redwerk can help every company to receive the best result.

In this project, Redwerk has automated professional sports operator's tedious manual search. The client was a company providing professional sports software solutions.

Redwerk was tasked with developing a solution, which combined automated web searches and web crawling. Additionally, we were asked to build a data storage solution in order to be able to sort information and run queries.

For the end-user, this means that the software makes it now easier to find tournaments and events and to get all the relevant tournament information and contact details.

Being a one-stop-shop for software development, Redwerk has implemented this automated sports tournaments crawling solution from the ground up. We went through every phase here: requirements analysis and discovery, UI/UX design, development, testing, deployment, maintenance, and support.

Redwerk’s team soon realized that is was very difficult, cost-ineffective and time-consuming to merely replicate our client’s manual algorithm of our customer with automated processes. Instead, we focused on implementing a search structure with a fixed set of data sources, of which Facebook was used in the prototype. This kind of system was much easier to implement and maintain and met the initial requirements perfectly.

With this solution, Redwerk managed to save its client valuable time and money, and our engineers found an elegant solution to a tricky problem, from which many professional sports operators should be able to benefit in the future.

Redwerk's task was to develop Citizen Requests Processing System for local government authorities in partnership with Green Valley BV.

European Union e-government laws define a clear matrix for government clerks processing citizen inquiries. Every time a person requests permission to perform certain property upkeep actions, update their address, request a new ID card, etc., they must follow a specific submission process. All requests must be answered within an established time period.

Green Valley BV is one of the top e-government solutions providers in the Netherlands and Belgium. Their specialized, government standard-compliant CMS is used by hundreds of cities and counties, non-profit organizations and companies, as well as in the foreign missions of the kingdom of the Netherlands. Green Valley BV delivered a system featuring a scalable multi-component architecture with Redwerk’s support. It can be installed on one PC or on multiple servers to withstand a heavy load.

Together, Green Valley and Redwerk developed the application installer that automatically detects an LDAP type and schema, allows database type selection and automatically updates the DB in upgrade mode saving field engineers’ valuable time.

The first beta was delivered 3 months after development began. Soon, Web Intake became one of Green Valley’s key products, used and loved by many government offices and end-users across the Netherlands and Belgium.

Breukelen Cellars is a wine shop and art boutique in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. Redwerk team coped with eCommerce solution within a set time and passed through every development phase to get an attractive design and convenient functionality of the Breukelen Cellars online store.

The specific task for Redwerk’s engineers, in this case, was to transfer a physical store to the web, including the following aspects:

- Inventory and shop: The availability of products had to be tracked by the system, and if an item was out of stock, this had to be indicated to the user. The PayPal service had to be used to accept payments, and payments via merch.bankofamerica.com also had to be supported and configured correctly.

- We had to implement standard features of a CMS like the ability to modify text, add pages or write blog posts.

- Create a persistent option to subscribe to a news bulletin throughout the website.

- Migrate from the previously configured mailchimp to mailgun, as this was supported by the Rackspace cloud service.

- In addition to the shop itself we were responsible for a full re-design of the website based on WordPress system, while maintaining the general layout and flow of actions. This had to be developed in a short amount of time, and based on a general description of the desired look and feel.

The ready website made by Redwerk included the following features:

- Wine shop

- Blog with news

- Coupons and account management functions

Green Valley developed a plugin called DSOI (Discovery Server Office Integration) for their CMS product that is used by a wide variety of government authorities, as well as corporate customers.

The plugin allows easy access from Microsoft Word to the document tree and dramatically improves user experience. It allows accessing, modifying, and uploading new documents to the CMS directly from Word and to also set metadata. It opens Word files stored in the CMS. All of these actions are performed via the plugin’s menu added at installation.

DSOI was written in C++ and it communicates with Office using COM and OLE technologies, so it could only be used with certain versions of MS Office libraries. Therefore, Green Valley was maintaining several plugin builds for each version of MS Word. And once users upgraded their Office version, the plugin became non-functional.

The challenge was to create a next generation plugin that would meet the following requirements:

- Easy to install

- Require no admin rights to install

- Be as independent from a MS Office version as possible

- Support multiple languages and be localized at least in English and Dutch

The technology proposed and implemented by Redwerk makes it easy to port the plugin to OpenOffice should there ever be a need to do so. Its modular architecture allows adding support for other storages, types of authentication and XML handling without changing the rest of the code.

Advertising & Marketing

All of Worldnow apps for local news channels show banner ads. These were always an important part of the apps, and it was Redwerk’s task to modernize their implementation and make them even smoother in order to have a solid foundation for future app upgrades. The banner ads were displayed via UIWebView and web snippets, which meant that the apps needed a browser component to be able to display banners.

We decided to implement an even more efficient advertising solution using Google DFP (Doubleclick For Publishers). DFP is a SaaS-based advertising software by Google. It is used to display banners anywhere: on websites, in-mobile applications, etc. It has a flexible selection of banners: e.g. they can be sorted by tags or by the location of a banner on a page. DFP users can easily configure the list of banners via a web interface.

After the migration to DFP was completed successfully, the next step was to configure the banners view properly. Ads had to be resized and configured for individual apps, and the user’s location info had to be taken into account.

This process required migrating all advertisement data (more than 300 affiliates, around 10,000 advertising campaigns, 100,000 banners) from the old platform to the new system.

Green Valley BV is one of the top e-government solutions providers in the Netherlands and Belgium. Their specialized, government standard-compliant CMS is used by hundreds of cities and counties, non-profit organizations and companies, as well as in the foreign missions of the kingdom of the Netherlands. The Belgian branch of Green Valley BV contracted Redwerk to customize its main product, the CMS, for the town of Maasmechelen in Belgium. They provided Web page designs approved by the town’s local authorities’ employees, as well as the website’s functional requirements.

Additionally, a new module had to be developed for the CMS product. It had to allow citizens and civil servants to make online listings or reservations for events. An event can be anything — a book, a car, a meeting room, officer appointments and more.

The reservation process had to be represented visually with a calendar displaying occupied and free time slots marked by different colors. Monthly, weekly and daily views had to be available. To authenticate users, the module had to be user profile-aware and be available on both the intranet (for civil employees only) and the Internet sites (for citizens).

Having worked side-by-side with Green Valley’s core CMS developers before, the Redwerk team easily customized it to the town of Maasmechelen’s needs and requirements. Photoshop mockups were created. Templates were put in their places. JavaScript programming was performed.

Business Momentum is a Dutch provider of an ERP based on the open-source OpenBravo project.

The client’s product was an enterprise resource planning system (ERP) based on the open-source Openbravo project. Redwerk’s software experts were tasked with extending the functionality of this software by adding one more screen to the user interface. For this, it was essential that we took into account the context of the given solution, and a custom business logic needed to be added. Our team had to create the application’s business layer and adapt the new UI to the existing UI of the software.

All new functionality was designed to fit in seamlessly with the rest of the system by keeping in mind Openbravo’ UI design principles. All ended well, and the extension was built according to the client’s requirements. Redwerk’s solution fit in perfectly with the existing structure and the general look and feel of the system.

When the Openbravo software finally reached its end customers, it was implemented in two companies of very different sectors, one a heavy industry company specialized in buying and selling torque and tensioning systems and the other a retailer and online shop focused exclusively on Apple products.

Universal Music Group (UMG) is the global music leader with strong market positions in recorded music, music publishing, and merchandising.

The challenge for Redwerk’s software engineers was to update a Facebook application by Universal Music which searches your friends’ “likes” and the music they are listening to and suggests music based on their preferences. This ass pulls music data from an artist database and then syncs the user’s lists with their friends in order to obtain “compatibility scores”, and then music recommendations are displayed according to these matches. The following changes needed to be done to the Facebook app in order to launch it on the American market:

1) Updating the algorithm for compatibility score. In order to show the appropriate list of artists we had to develop a compatibility scoring algorithm.

2) Extending links list. The existing application supported only two links for downloading from the online stores: iTunes and GetMusic. Our task was to extend this list with Spotify and other external resources.

3) Updating the design. We were given clear instructions by the client on how the layout had to be adapted to update the look and feel of the app.

4) Updating the Database. The database had to be updated with a new list of artists, album art and music download links.

5) Creating the updated Facebook app. And the most pleasant result for us was a happy client and a lot of Facebook users with much larger record collections!

Redwerk's task was to resolve an Important Video Streaming Issue with closed captioning for major TV channels in the USA.

The technology used by Worldnow for re-streaming and displaying live streams on their clients’ websites was provided by Akamai Technologies, a U.S. network which specializes in Internet content delivery. While this is one of the largest distributed computing platforms in the world and currently serves between 15 and 20 percent of all web traffic, the display of closed captions proved to be a problem as they just disappeared once a video signal containing CC data was uploaded to their servers. Redwerk's software experts quickly identified the source of the problem: Flash media live encoder (FMLE) actually deleted all CC data when encoding the video signal to AAC/H264.

Redwerk’s experts had to go through a lengthy testing process with a great number of different configurations for ffmpeg before finally achieving the project’s goal of sending CC data to Akamai and avoiding the loss of such data during encoding.

As a result, all streamed content is now displayed correctly through Flash Player (RTMP, HDS streaming) and also on iDevices (HLS streaming). The customer’s problem was solved in a satisfactory manner, and the great video experience is now guaranteed for all end-users.

The client hired Redwerk to modernize their web application for automation of workflows related to audit and statistics. The existing application had an outdated interface and was not too user-friendly. It only worked on Windows operating systems and required an installation. The idea for the new application was to have a modern, convenient interface, to be easier to use and to be extendable with additional functionality in the future.

The main task we've done was to re-create the desktop application as a web app in the cloud, making it accessible from anywhere and from any device, without the need for installation. The new application was redesigned to be usable by more than one user at a time, and also Redwerk's team updated all data in real-time.

Also, Redwerk has updated the app's design, which was prepared by our UI/UX designers and subsequently approved by the client. Logical functions were separated from the UI so that coding could be finished as soon as possible. The design followed a minimalistic concept.

Among other tasks, Redwerk has implemented some new required features and functionality (for invoices and client data, some new reporting features).

Redwerk’s engineers are known for providing high-quality Java outsourcing services and this project was no exception. As a result, a modern, dynamic web application was developed, mirroring the functionality of the desktop application while adding new features. The new web app automates a number of things, which had to be done manually before.

The IT consultancy company required an advanced web-based service management tool for organization and tracking. The project’s key goal was providing managers, consultants and accountants with the ability to manage customers, purchase orders, services, invoicing, payments and employees.

Main functionalities we've implemented:

- Services defined as a group of employees allocated for the function acquired by a client

- Hourly packages to offer clients a choice of extra and overtime hours

- The notion of functions, which must be associated with a service immediately following a client’s service purchase

- Invoice generation

- Reporting with hourly figures (normal, overtime and on-call) and expenses

At the project’s end, Redwerk and JBay implemented a sophisticated ERP System in spite of a strict time deadline made even tighter by having to clarify and translate parts of the spec written in Portuguese. The customer’s need for an advanced web-based service management tool for organization and tracking organization was met. Redwerk introduces a brand new mobile application for travelers. From now on the wanderlusters will not forget to update visas and will not exceed the permitted period of stay in the country.

Redwerk's Founder and Chief Executive Officer Konstantin Klyagin says of the solution: "Travelling is not only my passion but also my work. I am a businessman, and by virtue of my activity, I am obliged to travel frequently to meet with my clients or to visit various international conferences.

I have dozens of visas in my passport and it always puzzles me when it comes to visas’ due dates. Besides, I have alway to keep in mind the number of days I am allowed to stay in a particular country for not to breach the law.

There are tones of travel app to any taste that one can find in the stores, but when you have to travel from county to country on a daily basis, it is crucial to be aware of laws and your visa statuses in order to be an upstanding traveler, so I was trying to find the app that would help me to keep track of all that. I hadn’t found the one, so I decided - if there isn’t such a convenient tool yet - I must create it!”

In order to develop a smart on-hand digital travel assistant, the Redwerk team took into account the needs of both avid voyagers and businessmen, as well as professionals of the world-class level, who are often on their way from country to country completing their work contacts.

TripFrog is designed to warn in advance about the visa expiration date and the need to visit an embassy to renew it. The app automatically tracks travelers’ locomotion around the countries and prevents visa waivers in case they are going to exceed the allowed length of stay.

Besides, collecting the geomarks data of photos one makes on a trip, TripFrog shapes the detailed travel history and groups the photos from each visited location.

Redwerks serves as an extension of the developer team for Northeastern's central marketing team. They are able to build out entire sites, working within the existing Wordpress framework developed in-house. This means they had to pivot as changes to that framework rolled out. Not only were they able to be flexible and iterative with their work, they also contributed improvements to the codebase that we could incorporate into the parent code and theme. Their QA work is meticulous and their communication is always responsive, smart, and clear.

As a project manager, my team and I worked with Redwork as we need to push to production our new software quicker than our resources permitted. Their team was quick and reliable, always communicating clearly when something was missing or needed more information. They molded their way of working around ours in order to facilitate production and communication even though we were not in the same time zone and they felt like they were part of the internal team. The team of developers we worked with was exceptional and listened to our every need. They took the time to let us know if they were seeing any issues on their end so that we can quickly take action on ours, which saved us a lot of time and money. Review Summary

I worked with Redwerk from 2006 - 2013 on several software/web development projects. They participated in the whole process from ideation, technical specification, UX to implementation, testing, maintenance and support. Redwerk has a smart and agile team of people with all skills and competencies to make your development project a success!

What service was provided as part of the project?

Mobile App Development, Web Development, Software Development

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

They cover the whole process and provide an end-to-end solution.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

Working with any remote team requires a different approach than with your own on-site team: more specification and documentation. It requires active and day to day communication and product management. Redwerk does a good job managing that process.
