SoluteLabs Executive Interview

Karan Shah

Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
SoluteLabs is mobile, web design and development agency focused on healthcare, fintech, and retail; we have produced top #10 chart-topping applications on Android and iOS app stores whose graphics have gone viral, and more importantly, drawn millions of downloads.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
I started this company with my co-founder Prakash in 2014 when we realized we wanted to contribute to the IT industry in a more significant way but were limited by our means at the current companies we were working for. We wished to build a company that provided value to customers via design, code, and customer understanding.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We have a strong in-house team and aim to keep it that way by maintaining the quality of the deliverables we provide. In some cases, however, when we partner with vendors for certain skill sets, we make it transparent to the client, so the client has the option of evaluating the vendor themselves as well.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Our developers are vetted through stringent processes and while a fraction of them get selected. And those who get selected are equally adept at communication skills (written as well as verbal) as they are at their coding skills. We also have a psychometric evaluation done to understand how a person will fit into our company culture as we believe that attitude wins over skills.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We work mainly in healthcare, retail, fintech, and transport. We have worked with many small and mid-scale clients including startups that have raised funds and are managing over a million users in some.

Most of the engagements we have are long term as a product needs to continuously evolve and improve over time to succeed or even retain its position in the market. I would say we have had over 80% repeat business and around 70% of our customers have come through referrals.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
The first and foremost important part is the technology we choose to develop the app. Creating an app with native iOS and Android takes considerable time compared to hybrid apps, but it gives a significant performance boost as well.
We’ve started working with flutter which now provides the best of both worlds wherein we can create performant native and cross-platform apps which help reduce cost and time to market.

Also, we work in an agile manner wherein we deliver the apps in an iterative manner and keep on adding more functionality in each sprint. This helps the client achieve better insight into what we’re doing as well as incorporate any feedback from customers/beta users during the development phase.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
This is very subjective and based on the features and complexities; it may take 2 weeks to 2 years and still not get done with the app and the backend. We have worked with 5 projects with over 1 year’s duration and 3 projects with 2 years duration of continuous development. As I said earlier, those products that do not innovate or continuously make themselves better eventually die. One has to be in line with the latest advances in the market such as Touch ID, AR/VR, Apple and Google Pay, notch support, new OS support and so on.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
Time, Cost and User expectations: Depending upon the features we want to incorporate, the time to market, and the end user expectations, we help the client select a platform which reduces effort and cost. Knowing what trade-offs to make, at what times, is also key to the time and cost impact.
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
Though not a thumb rule, if the client is targeting US/EU region, we suggest iOS, and for Asia/developing nations, we recommend Android.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
We suggest Flutter if you’re looking for native experience on both platforms and Hybrid if you want to re-use code from the web-application such as React Native (although that capability will come to Flutter soon as well hopefully)
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
We need to take into consideration the number of screens, and the complexities in terms of API integration, animations and effects, SDK integration, platform and more before deciding the cost of the application.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We work in primarily three models:

1. Dedicated Team Model – In this model, we charge clients at the beginning of every sprint. Sprints are usually a 2-3 week long, and the charge is based on the number of people involved in the sprint.

2. Fixed Cost Model – This is a waterfall kind of project management wherein the scope is fixed before the development starts, and the client gets a demo at the end of every milestone after which the payment is released.

3. Time and Material – In cases where in the customer needs ad-hoc work done by different team members (and skill sets) then we ask the customer to pay an amount in advance, and this is then reduced as and when different team members work on the project.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Right now, we look for projects starting from 5000 USD onwards.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2018?
The smallest project we catered to in 2018 was 1000 USD (it was mostly support and fixes) and the largest one was close to 125000 USD.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
Again, there is no silver bullet to this, some apps are paid, some are freemium, and some are totally free and make money from ads and analytics. But for B2C applications, we suggest experimenting with the pricing and checking the responses with a freemium model.
Kindly share your feedback on how GoodFirms has been doing so far in increasing your visibility among potential clients.
GoodFirms has been great in terms of increasing visibility and continues to do so. It’s an excellent re-marketing tool as well.

Overview

Launched in 2016, The Ken is a digital publication that offers subscribers-only business journalism around Business, Healthcare, Crypto, Education, Finance, and more. In addition, the company has expanded to South-East Asia and launched three podcasts: "First Principles", "Cost to Company", and "Daybreak".

Since 2021, SoluteLabs has helped The Ken create and maintain mobile and iPad apps, adding features such as podcasts and newsletters.

Business Challenges

The Ken needed a mobile and iPad app to improve user experience, mainly since over 60% of its users use Apple devices. In addition, the existing Android app was not meeting business needs and negatively impacted user experience.

Result

SoluteLabs developed cross-platform apps from scratch across Android, iPhone, and iPad platforms. As a result, the apps were well-received, with ratings consistently at 4.8 and above.

The user-centric approach ensured easy navigation and fast loading times, improving engagement and retention. In addition, the apps included performance monitoring, multiple session recognition, offline capabilities, and more.

The apps were optimized for the App Store, meeting Apple's strict guidelines for mobile app development, and were featured on the store.

Prakash (Solute Technolabs founder) was a great partner who helped me develop my first fitness app (7 Daily Moves). He worked on this demanding project with lot of patience and constantly provided ideas to improve the app. He was very flexible with the changes needed to be made. He made it possible for my idea to come alive. I would highly recommend working with Solute Technolabs especially if you are a start up and have a new product to launch.

SoluteLabs was a great dev partner to work with. They frequently come up with value additions and user scenarios that we had not thought as well. They are very clear on setting expectations and that is the reason that I have worked with them over multiple projects in the past 4 years.
