Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
We are “TH-EY” (pronounced THEY). Our mission is to help our clients achieve greatness by providing tailored software solutions and consulting services.

I am the founder and CEO/CTO of the company. Besides management, I also actively participate in the projects by actively developing software and maintaining client communication.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
I used to work for many types of companies during my software development career - both small, relatively unknown, and large famous brands (like J.P.Morgan and Blackrock).
 
One thing that all of these companies had in common is that there was quite often a disconnect between the business stakeholders of the project and the technical team.

Each of the groups used their own vocabulary that described the same concepts. Also many times, the developers didn’t understand the purpose of the software that they were creating.
 
The result of this state of things is that the projects were constantly delivered late, with bugs, and quite often in a way that was quite different from how the business stakeholders imagined it.
 
That’s why when I was starting my own company I wanted to do things differently. That is why we listen to our clients and learn about their business before we even write a single line of code. Also, our developers talk directly to the client's team, which greatly improves communication and lets us avoid gatekeepers.
 
We engage closely with our clients by providing them with frequent software releases, allowing for a rapid feedback loop.
What is your company’s business model–in - house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
Our company is quite unique in the sense that from the very start we decided to work remotely. As the CEO, I am based in London, but our developers work from around the world.

We have a regular team of 7 developers, but very often supplement it by people from our network of tried and tested freelancers. Because of that, we never have problems with finding the right people for the job and we are able to flexibly scale depending on the demand.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Our business model stands on a few pillars:
  • understanding of our customer's business.
  • transparency and communication.
  • solutions that provide the best value for cost at a given time.
  • right people for the right job.

Because of the above principles, our clients express high levels of satisfaction. They know that we understand them, therefore we will deliver the right solution.
Also by giving them access to our project management tools and providing frequent releases they are always up to date on what’s going on in the project and what is their money spent on.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We have customers from different industries. We believe that only a strong understanding of the customer's problems allows us to deliver a successful solution.

That’s why even though our expertise is in general software development, we can engage in projects for different lines of business.

Most of our clients are startups and many of them have started their journey with us. As their business grows, they stick with us because they are confident that we can execute their vision and are happy with our work.

  • number of integrations with external services
  • number of screens that the application can contain
  • regulatory burden - if the application requires any specific work required to make it compliant with the law (some examples - health or finance-related applications)
  • if it contains animations and other visual additions
  • usage of non-native components like for example custom image pickers
  • the complexity of business logic
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
In most cases, the backend can be developed much faster than the frontend as it doesn’t need to implement any visual aspects, but just handle the data.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
To choose the right platform, one has to take a few things into consideration:
  • what is the target audience, are they mostly using Android or iOS
  • is either Android or iOS providing any features not found on the other platform
  • is the application computationally intensive and the work cannot be offloaded to the backend? if yes, then the best will be to build a native app. A good example would be video editing apps.
  • if the application is not computationally intensive or the work can be offloaded to a server, the best is to build a hybrid app. Hybrid apps in this case should prove to be indistinguishable from native ones while having a lower cost of development and maintenance.
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
Because both platforms are almost equally capable. It largely depends on what is the target audience for the application.

From a pure development speed point of view, I would recommend iOS because of the greater uniformity of the platform as well as a much smaller variety of screen sizes to test the app on.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
Native for apps that do a lot of processing on the phone, hybrid for everything else.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
We provide quotes for the cost of developing software based on the estimates in hours.

We create a breakdown of build items necessary for creating the app and analyze each one of them to assign an estimate to it.
 
Usually, the most time-consuming parts of development are integrations with external services as well as any specialized / highly not common features that a client may require.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We both estimate and bill by the hour. After trying different approaches over the years we found that it works best for both us and the clients.

This approach is the most flexible as it allows the clients to control their costs and prioritize the most important features.

We invoice our clients weekly so they have an accurate idea about the spend.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We don’t have a minimum budget, the smallest project that we did, cost the client 120 GBP.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2019?
Minimum 234 GBP, maximum 34 000 GBP
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
There is no such thing as the best business model to generate revenue from any software.
 
In some cases, the software that we create complements another offering and is not expected to be profitable on its own.
 
Sometimes it lends itself better to a subscription-based model if we talk about services.

Sometimes towards commission based if the product is an e-commerce platform.

Usually, our customers best know how they want to generate the revenue from the app, our role, in this case, is mainly to suggest the best technical solutions to allow that to happen.

The project went through all the stages of our software development:

  • POC development – where we tested if we are able to integrate with the most popular sports events ticket platforms

Web platform that allows filing dormant company accounts by the owners, directly to Companies House in under 2 minutes.

In the UK, every company doesn’t matter if it’s active or dormant, every year must file their account to the Companies House. You can do it through your accountant, or with a dedicated online service. But the problem is, that all the services are dedicated to the active companies, which makes the form much more complicated than for the dormant companies.

This is where just dormant accounts steps in, and handle the difficulty.
The platform provides the most minimal form to be filled, additionally pulling the data straight from the Companies House API, to make the process even easier.

For a fraction of the accountant’s rate, you can file your dormant company online and have it done within minutes.

From the technical perspective, we’ve built a web application with React.js and the AWS-based back-office.
The interesting parts of the application were:

  • integration with Companies house API – as any government API, it wasn’t easy. Handling the XML’s, and going back and forth with the support, was a challenge.
  • integration with Stripe
  • backend built on AWS Lambdas
  • micro database added in AWS DynamoDB – non-relational database, which was needed in the process.

The idea of Urbanite came to fruition pre-pandemic when the founders were sitting in a pub on London Bridge, with friends, thinking about heading to Soho to continue the night.

TH-EY were faced with the challenge of building an app which would answer those questions with minimal info about the design and a very tight budget. We choose to use the cross-platform framework React. Native as a mobile technology to write the code once and deploy to iOS and Android at once. This helped us minimise the cost of development and satisfy all client’s requirements. Along with a simple admin panel and backend hosted in the AWS cloud, we built a comprehensive solution for pub & restaurant discovery without exceeding the budget.

We embarked on a project with Common Surface, a B2B SaaS company, to develop a web application for hybrid working environments. Challenges & Objectives:

The primary challenge was creating a platform that facilitates hybrid working—a relatively novel concept pre-pandemic. The initial goal was to devise an algorithm for scheduling work locations, considering the limitations of office space vs. employee count. As client needs evolved, the project expanded to include interactive features such as absence management, event scheduling, and enhanced authentication, alongside technological hurdles like calendar integration and rate-limit issues.

Our objectives were:
- Develop a custom web application for simplified hybrid work planning.
- Integrate advanced features for comprehensive scheduling.
- Ensure the platform's performance and scalability.
- Maintain user-friendly design and efficient coding practices.

Solution:

The project began with the development of an MVP within three months by two developers. This initial phase laid the groundwork for a functional hybrid work management solution. Following the successful MVP presentation and investment, the team scaled to 13 members to accommodate the development of additional features.

Significant milestones included:
- Transitioning from Kanban to Scrum for improved velocity and structure.
