WebiNerds Executive Interview

Eduard Lobas
Eduard Lobas
CEO
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
We assist startups from early stages with all their development and design needs. Mostly we provide them with remote team extensions. That means some software engineers join the project as a part of the team but being actually a remote resource. We handle the employee risks; our partners get assistance in weeks.
Headquartered in Ukraine and having a front office in Boston, Massachusetts, we offer top-notch full-stack developers for reasonable prices.
As CEO at Webinerds, I’m managing a team of business-savvy software engineers. We believe technology should serve the people. And we are passionate about great software products being designed to make life comfortable or to make the business more effective, secure, and smarter.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
Having a strong background in technologies, we started WebiNerds in 2010 with the mission to help pioneer companies enter the market and achieve their business goals using modern technologies and approaches.
What is your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
Everything is done in-house. We hire top-notch specialists and invest in their development to follow the industry’s best practices. All our developers are full-stack, middle, or senior level.
Currently, our team consists of forty enthusiastic people, including developers, designers, project managers, QAs, business analysts, and DevOps.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
We realize how hard it is to find a really great local engineer when you are a startup. We can provide companies with top-notch engineers within the weeks instead of months. It’s big leverage when you should move fast.
Integrity and transparency are our top priorities. Our goal is to become long-term reliable partners for our clients. We start each project by diving into a business environment and understanding the client's needs. We evaluate options and suggest a way to create efficient development processes. Our main goal is to be a part of innovation.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive?
Today we have extended experience with financial technologies, advertisement, healthcare, data science, and machine learning.
I’m happy to say that some of our partners work with us for 6-7 years.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a web app.
In case of development from scratch, there is an idea to bring something new on the market, and you are building MVP to test it. In such a case, the key factor is client goals and requirements. Before starting development, we provide a discovery phase, where we analyze the initial requirements and identify the core functionality of the app that is vital for the successful launch.

If we join a team working on an already existing project, we just follow the plan they already have.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a web app?
There is no standard calculation and frames. The time and costs depend not only on hourly-rate and development timeframes, but also on many other factors such as complexity of project, design, technology stack, risks that should be considered, and ongoing project support.

For building an MVP, it usually takes eight to ten weeks, for most of our cases.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a web application?
The key parameters depend on your goals. I would define application functionality and security requirements as the two key parameters of choosing the right web application platform. Oh, and of course, a deadline. If you have some specific tight deadlines, this should be the key factor for selecting a technology stack. In some cases, we suggest using some backend-less services, for example.
Which platform and technologies do you prefer to use in development of your web apps?
In terms of the backend, we prefer to work with Python, PHP. On the frontend, we have lots of experience using modern frameworks such as React, Angular, Vue. We also use AWS as a production environment. As for design, we work with Sketch, Figma, Adobe Illustrator, and InVision Studio. For mobile applications, we use React Native mostly.
Do you offer website design templates or customised website design, and do you have a responsive website design?
We have internal design and illustrators’ teams who create a unique user experience. We harness a design thinking approach in our development, which means we carefully analyze potential product users, use prototyping and testing to bring the most effective solution.

In case the budget is limited, or the time frames are tight, we consider template solutions.

As for responsiveness, nowadays, it is a must to have, so we always bring a user-friendly and responsive website.
Which Content Management System do you prefer to use (Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal etc)?
The only case our clients need some CMS is a landing page. Usually, we use Wordpress (it’s still the most common and simple CMS), and Hubspot CMS (it allows them to know more about their customers).
Do you provide website maintenance services?
We do not provide website maintenance as a separate service. But of course, it’s a part of the project usually.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a web application?
The costs of the application highly depend on the next key factors:
  • The complexity of backend and main functionality
  • Project architecture
  • Technology stack required and approaches needed to be applied
  • The time required to complete the project and resources
  • Security requirements
  • Third-party integrations
  • Complexity of design
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We work on a Time & Materials basis. Our clients pay monthly, usually.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We work with startups and usually start with an MVP stage that takes around 2-3 months to launch the product. So I would say this is our minimum cooperation duration.
What is the price-range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2019?
The smallest project we worked in 2019 was $15000, and the biggest was around $150000, and it’s still ongoing. Please note, most of our partners work with us on the out-staffing model and handle part of the tasks in-house.

Review Summary

Webinerds is one of the best development teams I have worked with, if not the best. They are very knowledge and never say no for an answer. They are agile, prompt and always available to help. The thing I like most about working with them is that they are business orientated. They understand software from a business perspective and this is the most important requirement in having a scalable system that would support future growth. As a business owner with income dependent on our e-business, it is important to have a reliable partner to support us. This was something I found in Webinerds. They are always available to support us at any time of day.

Review Summary

Netra Inc. is a deep learning AI [artificial intelligence] company providing social media imagery analysis for brands. WebiNerds assigned 2 full-stack web engineers for our project, primarily working on building our main artificial intelligence API. We worked in a hands-on fashion with WebiNerds initially, but, as our local team grew, we started having project or team-based interactions. We are using a single resource from WebiNerds at the moment but still rely on them for insular tasks.
