Sphinx Solutions was involved in developing an app for both iOS and Android platforms as well as a micro-site for promotional purposes. The project was finished on time except the changes required by the client and within the fixed budget.

PROJECT INSIGHTS

Scope

1. What was the objective of the project you did with Sphinx Solutions?

I started the company called Cloudknots which is a cloud-based software company and WhizzTips is a subsidiary of Cloudknots. So there are two aspects to this business, one is a B2B and another is C2C; the later one is a platform that connects people with skills, whether that’s accountants, lawyers, plumbers, or anybody who’s got skills in the service industry, to users who need those services. The purpose is connecting individuals with people who have different skills, so by developing a software that lets people register on the site or download the app and connect to those people, that’s the whole purpose of the development of the application itself. The app is now available in app stores; people can download the app and start searching for the people who’ve got the skills and pay easily using their credit card, so it’s pretty much cashless service and it’s available worldwide.

2. What is the scope of the project? What all did Sphinx Solutions do for you?

They developed the website and the application for Android as well as for iOS. They also created a micro-site very recently for me to do some promotion, so it’s a marketing portal where we were running a specific promotion, people who refer other people to the website, we gave them iTunes and Google Play cards. The designs were mine; they did the development part mainly, so I had to tell them how I needed it. Obviously, they have done a lot of work and they have the experience, so when we give a suggestion, then obviously they come back and give us their suggestion about why don’t we do it this way or the other. You expect this from every company who say they are the experts.

3. What was the estimated timeframe committed for the completion of the project?

The commitment was for about sixty working days and it was completed on time. Time is obviously a very relative term because I have changed a lot of things after my initial suggestions in the scope of work, so when you do that, the time will also change accordingly because it’s not based on the initial scope of work that they now have to commit to, so these sort of things in software development will always be fluctuating. The marketing portal that I wanted, we expected them to deliver within a week’s time but it almost took two weeks, but then, like I said I changed quite a bit of thing that I wanted from the initial scope of work because I’ve been researching to make it more impactful and more appealing. The project started probably around September 2015.

4. How much time did it actually take for completing the task?

It got completed in December 2015. By the end of October it was ready, but then we made a lot of tweaks to the application as we started to roll out app into the store. We did a lot of testing, I tested the product for a long time, so it almost took thirty days to test for me and my partner, where the two of us gave a lot of feedback and started tweaking again and again and then we released it on the AppStore and we only did a word-of-mouth promotion to a few friends of ours and took their feedback to test it in different countries. The website was running parallel, so while the application was being developed, the website also got completed. It was done within two weeks.

5. What is the current status of the project?

It’s fully live, everybody can use it. The application is being downloaded across the world now and we’re still promoting it.

 

Budget

6. Please provide an approximate figure (in $) for the work done?

For the application, it was about twelve thousand dollars and in total, I must have spent about sixteen thousand dollars.

7. Did they exceed the committed price point and why?

No, there were no extra charges apart from the micro-site that I wanted additionally because that was not the part of the initial scope, so we had to negotiate on the cost of that and then agree on the timeline and move forward with it, so there was not fluctuation with the cost.

8. How did you come to know about Sphinx Solutions?

I was looking for developers when I started off the company and during that time I registered with a few entities. Many companies reached out to me after that sent me emails with the examples of the work that they have done.

9. Why did you choose to partner with them?

The way they presented Sphinx Solutions and the services they provide, they seemed quite interested; they did a good job in convincing me. So, I felt confident and thought of giving them a try! There is an application that they have developed called Vivino and I’m aware of it because I have used it, it’s a very successful wine application, so I have been following them as well.

 

OUTCOME

10. Did Sphinx Solutions evaluate your project scope and requirements correctly?

They had not developed something like this before; it was the first time that an application of this scale or this complication was being developed; when you have an application that’s integrating the payment, I think it’s a testimony to the character that the guys have got.

11. Did the company deliver as per your expectations?

Yes, absolutely. I think they did a good job in terms of maintaining the quality and everything as I expected.

12. Are you satisfied with the sales and customer support service?

Well, it’s still the early days but so far I have got the right amount of support. I am connected with the team on Skype, so that means I can interact whenever I want. People like me who are starting new into this field need someone who can perform at any given time and such support and training came from them.

 

OPINION

13. Is there anything that makes them stand out compared to other companies (core Strengths)?

Generally, what we look for as entrepreneurs is the technical side first and then comes the resource availability which means people need to be available at any given time. Also, when we have an idea or thought that comes to our mind, we want to execute it quickly; it’s not like running a business where we can actually plan and do a research and think on it for a long time before we start implementing it. We pretty much want it now because the opportunity is now in a lot of cases, so that’s basically what we look for. From that perspective, they were very technically sound, cost-effective, and available every time that I wanted them to be and we have been talking on a regular basis in terms of getting the job done.

14. According to you, is there any area that you think they can improve upon?

I think their proof-reading is one area; sometimes what happens is when you have an international application and the way English is perceived in other countries makes a lot of difference in the acceptance of the application itself. When you make a spelling mistake in an application and you have it available in the US or in Australia or in Sweden, the people there will presume that the application itself would be of poor quality or not up to standard, that’s what people think. When it comes to being international, you need to make sure that your proof-reading, your language, your grammar make sense to people outside India across the world.

15. Did they offer proactive consultative approach? (Technical advice, design changes etc.)

Yeah, they always do. It was never the case to just finish the app and take the money with them if that would have been the case; I would have got it done for far cheaper. Sphinx worked with a proactive approach. They always gave me suggestions as they were more experienced and have done quite a lot of other applications. They guided me on what things will work in the market, what things I should be doing and what is not really making any sense.
