I guess I was lucky. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life at age 11. An art teacher in 6th grade introduced me to photography, and I was hooked. Not long after, my dad built a darkroom in the basement and I was off and shooting.
Originally from Chicago, I moved to Utah to earn a bachelors degree in photography from Utah State University. The program focused on medium and large format photography for fine art and commercial applications.
After graduation, I joined one of the most successful commercial studios in the intermountain west as an assistant on studio, advertising and catalogue shoots. I progressed to a position as a full time photographer as the business expanded to the west coast.
After several years of shooting for the studio, I decided to head out on my own and start my own operation in 1992. While I enjoyed the product photography Iʼd been doing, I was interested in shooting more sports/active, lifestyle, and portrait photographs.
I also wanted to try my hand at out-of-the-ordinary studio work. One of my very first studio experiments was with light painting in studio. The process crosses the line between photography and painting, with an end result more like a painting than a photograph.
Since going out on my own, Iʼve hung off the side of cliffs to capture rock climbers and joined cowboys at dawn heading out for a ride. Iʼve shot powder skiing before the sun comes up and photographed food as beautiful as any work of art. Iʼve shot sports cars and semis in motion with my camera just inches off the road. Iʼve captured Olympics and World Championships, numerous pro bike races, dozens of World Cup ski races, speed skating races, and professional sports car races including the 24 Hours of Daytona. Iʼve created environmental portraits from coast to coast and met some truly interesting people along the way, from attorneys, to truck drivers, to professional and Olympic athletes. Thereʼs never been a dull moment.
