Making Leadership Training Effective and Tips for Preventing Training Failures

Do you call yourself a leader? Do you consider a person successfully running an organization a leader? Well, if you do, I suggest you rethink. Before I present my points to support my argument, let’s first examine the bookish definition of leader and leadership.

According to Google, a Leader is any person who leads a group, while Leadership is the action of leading a group. And this is what we have been taught all our lives. Well, let’s rephrase this definition and look at it the other way; a leader is a person who works with a group of people towards the goal of being successful collectively, while leadership is the act of taking accurate steps that can help the whole group to reach the level of success.

What Makes a Leader Stand Out?

An ordinary man would think of his benefit while doing a task. At the same time, a leader looks at the bigger picture, i.e., doing whatever efforts it takes to achieve the goal, risk-taking, and most importantly persuade other group members to perform the task. 

How to know if a person is a good leader or not?

Not every leader is a good leader. It takes a lot of effort, time, and dedication to making people trust in you and follow in your footsteps. Generally, there are two kinds of leaders; influential leaders and efficient leaders. A good leader is one who adapts the qualities of both types of leaders. In simpler words, a good leader is one who: 

Shares the Credit 

A leader is not selfish but selfless. A good leader knows what the group has achieved and where it lacked. So whatever has been completed, a good leader gives credit to each member involved in the process.

Let’s the Group Members Share Control

  1. Delegate your members with responsibility. When people are given a particular workload with guilt, they tend to work faster with extra motivation and effort. A good leader lets people around him grow.
  2. Appreciation: A good leader celebrates the skills and talents of his members.
  3. Be lenient yet challenging: A good leader makes his teammates realize that they have to thrive hard. A little discomfort will not harm them; the process begins when one takes chances.
  4. Acceptance: Learn to take the heat. If something you did as a leader did not turn out fruitful, take the blame. Good leaders do not make excuses or transfer the responsibility for their mistakes onto others.
  5. Value and connection: One of the essential qualities of a good leader is the power of connection. When you work as a team, you need to make sure all your members feel valued and welcomed. This can be done by trusting them, giving a little command over certain things, involving them in the decision-making process, and valuing their ideas.

How Can A Person Be A Good Leader?

No one is born a leader, an employee, or an entrepreneur. This is what a person becomes when he/she looks out for his skills and abilities, what he/she is capable of and how he/she thinks. But can one assess himself? Well, there are different training programs and workshops where you can convert your thought processes into ideas and see whether he is capable or not. 

What Are Leadership Training Programs?

Leadership training programs are specialized programs that focus on making you learn different leadership approaches, leadership language, polishing your skills, and inducing motivation. The objective of leadership training programs is to bring out the best in candidates and employees and get the work done by working together, collectively. These skills may include worth ethics, communication forms, ability to inspire and motivate, and risk-taking. 

Generally, there are four approaches to leadership programs; Direct, Coach, Support, and Delegate.

Direct Approach

When a leader chooses a direct approach towards a group, he guides the people involved. It does not mean that the leader orders or tells the people what to do or how to do it. There is a thin line between guiding and ordering that the leader needs to look after carefully. 

Coaching Approach

One of the most extraordinary powers of leaders is their vision. Here vision means what requires the most attention and effort. Leaders need to direct this vision to their team. Here, communicating is what matters the most. Selling your idea as a leader and making people work towards it is what coaching means.  

Supporting Approach

As discussed earlier, a leader works with a team towards the same goal. This kind of work requires a lot of collaborating and sharing worlds through pitching in ideas, talking to your group mates about it, taking their point of view, and having all the people involved in the decision-making process.

Delegating Approach

This kind of approach works best while leading senior leaders or managers. Here, it focuses on giving the members a massive percentage of control and authority. 

How Can I Self-Assess Myself?

Before attending a leadership training program, a person should self analyze himself and his capabilities. Once a person does self-evaluation, this is what he can expect out of himself that can tell whether he can be a leader or not.

  • Ability to be a mentor: People look up to their leaders as role models.
  • Can bring a change: In order to be a leader, you should be able to make an impact on both; your co-workers and your firm.
  • Importance of vision: When you lead, you follow a dream. Along with you, all your teammates follow the image of your footprints too. Hence a leader should focus on following a vision.
  • Work as a whole: Leaders must know how to encourage collaboration. A good leader keeps his workers united on one platform.
  • Optimistic: One of the most important aspects of being a leader involves having a positive attitude.

What Causes Leadership Training Failures?

Although leadership training programs are said to be very successful in the long run, there are high chances that some of them might even fail. Few reasons could be:

  • No prior planning: To run a successful program, management members and leaders should discuss the content and the possible outcomes.
  • Learning over Transferring: Leadership training programs fail to deliver content that can have a long-term impact on a person. They focus more on transferring bookish knowledge instead of making them learn qualities that can stay with them even when they leave the conference rooms.
  • Follow up: No one prefers a person who just speaks for the sake of talking. Leadership training programs fail because the speakers or motivators do not implement what they deliver. If a person can not see the abilities in you, he will lose interest in your content.
  • Area of concern: One main problem is that the speaker spends more time delivering the content and less developing the leaders in leadership training programs. The audience needs personal development, not words or paragraphs of already available knowledge.

What to Expect From a Leadership Training Process?

Leadership training programs teach ordinary people the set of skills, abilities, and approaches to cope with challenges and work with people collectively and efficiently.

  1. Personal growth: A leadership training program aims to teach you a lot about personal grooming. It teaches you about yourself, your abilities, and your surrounding who you work with. This induces self-awareness.
  2. Discovery: Leadership Training programs can help you explore other sides of yourself. This way, you can look out for the different skills that you have. Leadership courses provide you with a clear idea about how to utilize your skills.
  3. Teaches you how to manage your attitude and behaviors: Leadership training programs can help you in managing your perspective, the ways you go around and interact with others, as well as how you deal with certain situations(in a rush, under pressure).

How Can Leadership Training Help a Firm, or an Individual?

A road towards better decision-making

Leadership training, if done right, provides people with an enormous scope of learning and thinking. In a firm, decision-making is an important part. Leadership training can help them look at the bigger picture, the pros/cons, and intelligently react to losses/failures.

A look into the better future

Training leadership can make your firm better equipped to handle uncertain conditions. Leadership programs teach people to make decisions, be accountable for their choices, and handle a loss with patience and maturity.

Retaining talent

Employees look for the top firm while firms look for the best talent available. A leadership training program can benefit both; the employee and the employer. For an employee, it helps him to see whether a firm and its leader are effective or not, whereas, for an employer, it allows him to be a better leader and present himself more efficiently in front of the candidates.

How to Prevent Leadership Training Failures

To have an effective and successful leadership program, consider the following:

  • Know your leadership requirements: what part of leadership needs to be covered and made useful. Everyone has a different set of skills, different mindset, and looks at things differently. Hence, leadership conferences must cater to all various aspects of leadership according to the audience. 
  • Know your teammates: what your audience wants to listen to, what their problems are, and what are the accurate solutions to their problems. A good leadership conference must be pre-planned so you can answer confidently and logically in case of any query.
  • Know who can guide: Look out for the best talent to be the speaker and show your audience. Leadership training programs must be designed chronologically so that whatever the speaker is saying can be delivered with clarity. This not only helps the audience stay interested but also helps them stay motivated.
  • The standard for success: know what you are working towards, your goals, and what standard you have set according to your vision. When people attend leadership training programs, they look for a mentor, a guide. To achieve this, speakers should set a clear vision and goal.
  • Enhance evaluation skills: Selection of CEOs in various firms is carried out inefficiently due to lack of inadequate resources and unskilled evaluators. Hence, they rely on their own inexperienced, unqualified evaluation. Trained and skillful board members should be elected to select CEOs for the company properly.
  • Appraising external opportunities: In case of threatening internal training programs, the CEO should be sent for external programs at renowned institutions to achieve beneficial feedback for optimistic growth.
