Kellton

Kellton developed the initial system, so they were familiar with it and had the documentation in place. However, they didn’t have our perspective on how the platform should look to customers, so we initially talked through that and provided guidance. Through various conversations, we came to an understanding of how the system should be reconfigured. From there, they developed a three-phase approach to implementation, each with more subcomponents and phases defined by software specifications. They develop the software based on our requirements; we review it and go through iterations until we finalize it. So far, phase one is complete, and phase two is ongoing. Currently, we’re starting to outline what we’ll do for subsequent software releases.

We engaged with Kellton to develop a greenfield product used to track maintenance on our equipment out in the field. Their team first worked closely with us to architect the solution, defining a set of milestones to be delivered within a year. Then, they developed the solution following the plan they had defined. After delivering the solution, they kept working with us for two years in a maintenance support mode as we brought the project internally so that we could support it long-term. As for its technology stack, Kellton developed this solution’s backend in PHP with a Laravel framework. They also used Angular for the frontend and MySQL for its database. One of the key features of this product is that it is a multitenant solution to support a wide range of customers, for which Kellton helped us overcome the login complexities associated with that. As this is a paid service solution, it also has an administrative side to support end customers. As end users are technicians who aren’t necessarily tech-savvy, Kellton also integrated simple forms for them to enter the core data for the administration, allowing higher levels in the company to read that data. Moreover, the heart of the product is to assure compliance for equipment owners. Depending on their geographic location, users have different compliance requirements, so this app helps them with that compliance. It tells them when they should go to check the equipment and what to do once they find the problem. It also has an engine to generate reports that users can then supply to the different government bodies that enforce regulations.

Kellton has delivered on time and on budget, with no surprises in that regard. They’re always very upfront, and everything has aligned with their initial estimations. Throughout the Drupal upgrade project, we shared emails and Jira tickets interchangeably, and we held weekly Zoom meetings.

There have been a few issues with staying on schedule and communication, but overall we’re very happy with the collaboration. They have a process they follow for development, and when we come to them, our requirements go to the right people. We typically communicate through email, and we use a software management tool for tickets and when we need to let Kellton know about enhancements and other requirements. We also use this tool to track the project's progress and have daily stand-ups.

I’m genuinely impressed by how flawless Kellton’s execution has been. From the initial planning to launch, the team showed a solid grasp of our technical requirements and executed everything within the expected timelines. The project was completed in just eight months, and the mobile app is now an integral part of our operations. Communication was smooth via email, WhatsApp, and calls. The team was organized, reliable, and delivered consistently. While we were very happy overall, we believe Kellton could benefit from gaining a deeper understanding of our industry in order to proactively bring in their own ideas and strategic recommendations.

We’ve had a long-standing collaboration with Kellton focused on supporting our two websites, both integrated with our policy administrative backend. The older website has been maintained by Kellton, primarily with minor changes and fixes, as part of our strategy to avoid major updates. Our internal team manages the newer website. Over the years, Kellton has proven responsive and adaptable to our evolving needs. Most of the work has been requirement-driven without rigid deadlines, and they’ve handled this approach well. In 2022, we began working on a new product that involved more complex changes, and Kellton is now actively involved in the development for that launch. Their familiarity with our systems and flexibility has made them a reliable extension of our team.

Kellton has worked with us for a little over two years on the software development side of our company. Their team has worked very closely with me and another in-house product manager to develop our web app. As for the technology stack, we've predominantly used Python, React, and JavaScript. Although Kellton has mainly focused on developing our web app, they've also been great partners in designing and architecting it as well.

Our overall experience working with Kellton has been good. They've followed best practices shared in the industry, such as creating the complete documentation of the project and creating a document called the Software Requirement Specification Document. The main impact of this project is that we've had a very stable website from 2017 to 2024, our platform has been very secure. Although I also give credit to our internal security team, the fact that our downtime has been very low during that period is great. Throughout those years, our site has been down around 4–5 times, if not less. This is a testament that Kellton has built a very stable platform for us. Moreover, our web platform is very easy to understand, and the support provided by Kellton has been very good. The developers assigned to our project have been very responsible. They know their job and have done a decent job of developing our platform.

They also enable the client to release new functionalities and bug fixes on a monthly basis. Moreover, the team facilitates daily online meetings to discuss the client's requirements, presents the level of effort, and completes tasks as scheduled.
