Executive Interview of MobileUp

Sergey Denisyuk
CEO
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
MobileUp is a custom mobile and blockchain development company. We are focused on technologically complex projects for IoT, transport, medicine, media and financial services. We have been working since 2009 and gained a huge experience that we now turn into value for our customers. I’m founder & CEO of MobileUp.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
We started as a product company. Back in 2008-2009 I created a social geolocation service of the same breed as Foursquare, Gowalla and others. Start-up had failed but we had learned how to develop mobile apps and started our custom development business.
What is your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We have an in-house team of more than 30 employees. We provide our customers with dedicated teams enhanced with our product vision and technical expertise as well.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Providing dedicated teams gives our customers reliable delivery of a product in time.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We’re especially strong in apps for transport, medicine, IoT, media, POS systems, FinTech startups. In 2017 we gained expertise in blockchain and opened blockchain consultancy service.
About 70% of our customers are long-term partnerships.

Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
Generally, it depends on the complexity of the interface and functions, number of functions and platforms, requirements and risks.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
It depends on the type of project. A simple one can be done in 2-3 months. Let us say, an MVP for a food delivery service took us 3 months to be made. A quite complex project could last for about 6-7 months and more. For example, we developed an app for a train ticket booking application for 6 months.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
Platform choice depends on a target audience. Android is more preferable for a mass audience which includes people of different status and income. In contrast, iOS is for iPhone owners only, who are supposed to afford expensive gadgets. The process of choosing platform is individual for every business, and the decision needs to be backed up by the logic. To choose the first platform to develop for, a product owner should perform a market research to find out the prevailing devices of a specific audience.
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
As I said, it depends on a target audience. For example, there is a cargo delivery startup. What is the primary platform for its app? Apparently, the answer is Android. Cargo is usually delivered by truckers. In general, they have no need in buying an iPhone, and they won't buy it on time.
In contrast, let's imagine an on-demand refueling startup, in which the customer just sends a request via the application, and the service car arrives immediately and refuels customer's vehicle. Which platform is more appropriate to be the first? Probably, iOS. The target audience is people who can pay and they don't want to waste time on refueling. To be clear, imagine people, who drive BMW or Mercedes and are willing to pay for comfort.
However, every project is unique and exceptions are possible. So, it's better to make a decision which is based on some research and analyses of collected data.

Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app?
We recommend creating good quality native apps. Hybrid apps don’t save money, they contain more bugs, it's more difficult to maintain and they require more time for revision. Someday any hybrid will have to be remade into the native one.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
While reviewing the project we take into account the amount of requested features and their complexity as well as possible risks and pitfalls. Also we may offer alternative ways to achieve customer's goals.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
Payment depends on the hours spent , Time & Material consumed.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We are 8 years old. The minimum budget for this time was about $1500. Usually, we evaluate the problem, propose a solution, and declare how much it will cost.
Our partnership depends not only on the budget but on a situation and our interest in developing the project: technologies, brand, purpose. Our mission is to create useful apps.

What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2017?
Minimum is $30.000 and maximum $250.000.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
At first, we explore the client's business. Then we decide, what kind of application is required. Not every business earns money from its app. Some of them need an application to automate processes or to build customer loyalty. For instance, we have a telematics project for an insurance company, which app measures its customers' driving quality and safety. As a result, higher rate allows customers to get a better discount on insurance. In this case the app is just an instrument, not a way of earning.
