Executive Interview of Quema

Serhii Antonuik
CEO
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
We are a company that specializes in providing DevOps services and helping companies to build a scalable and secure IT infrastructure with a dedicated DevOps team.
I am the CEO of Quema.
I am the CEO of Quema.
What is the story behind starting this company?
In my case, the origins of Quema are not unique. I would even say the story behind is quite typical. Unlike IT achievers in other "success stories," I haven’t had an entrepreneurial spirit or business skills or abilities since my childhood.
However, I’ve been involved in sports since an early age, which has shaped my "thirst for a challenge" and a desire for constant growth and self-improvement.
However, I’ve been involved in sports since an early age, which has shaped my "thirst for a challenge" and a desire for constant growth and self-improvement.
This has given me the determination to work my way up in many IT companies for 12 years from startups to Fortune 100 companies and move ahead in my career from “IT Support" to Lead of DevOps position.
At one point, I realized that I needed to move on and take on a new challenge myself. Well, what could be a better challenge than starting your own company? There's enough challenge and opportunity here to implement all the ideas that I've been accumulating for over 12 years in IT. I was lucky enough to meet my business partner who shared many of my values. He also had some fantastic ideas which we have been implementing together we decided on directions and began our journey at Quema. This is the story behind starting Quema.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We use and work exclusively on the "in-house" model because we have high requirements for candidates. With all due respect, third-party vendors are not always able to meet them.
Also, at Quema we have our own culture which we stick to and follow, and the "in-house" model allows employees to be part of it.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
First of all, DevOps and related treads are our core business, while in most other companies Devops is part of the services in the company's portfolios.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We have no reference to any industry, so we work with all our clients. The main thing is that everything must be legal, and all activities must be performed in accordance with the law.
First of all, the industry chooses the technological stack, that it will use at the moment (or plans to migrate to it) and which best suits its requirements.
One of the most recurring areas in Quema is Big Data and data processing we have enough experience and expertise in this area.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
One of the most frequent requests is for scaling infrastructure and application(s).
Nowadays, thanks to cloud solutions and providers, this can be easily achieved. However, it is necessary to implement it on the application side first, and that’s when you need our expertise to exclude all SPOF (Single Point of Failure).

What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
For the company, the level of customer satisfaction is always a high priority, so we are constantly improving it.
At the moment, about 50% of our clients recommend us as a reliable service provider, which is an indicator of the level of trust and service to us.
This is due to our communication with them as we put ourselves in our customers' shoes and try to help them using all our knowledge and experience.
Naturally, we are trying to increase this percentage, and it is one of our top priorities.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
From a technical perspective, the implementation of technical support and reaction in incident response is a common practice.
First, we install and configure a monitoring system for all important services and components. As soon as we get a notification, we automatically create a ticket with the incident in the ITSM system.
Once the problem has been fixed, we create a separate ticket to analyze the incident and prevent it in the future.

What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
In our case, we offer two payment models. "Time of Material" and "Scope of Work”.
Regarding SoW, we collect all the requirements from the client, do the analysis and create a proposal for SoW which includes:
Regarding SoW, we collect all the requirements from the client, do the analysis and create a proposal for SoW which includes:
- A detailed description of what will be done.
- What kind of work is included in the SoW.
- End result.
- Timing and delivery of SoW.
- Final price.
All these items are discussed and approved by the client. SOW is preferable for single work with a fixed price, so the client can plan the budget for necessary works. In the case of long-term works, SoW is not suitable as it doesn't give as much flexibility as the "Time and Material" model. In any case, we discuss all these details before the work begins
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We take into account the requirements of the client because it is the requirements and their complexity that shape the final cost.
For example, if the requirements are high, then we need to involve some of the best-qualified and highly-paid engineers for successful implementation. In the case of regular requirements, we will offer the customer the best option for implementation. We are open to all our clients from small to large with different budgets and requirements. In any case, we discuss all these aspects and come to a unanimous win-win solution for both parties.

What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2021?
In 2021, the project based on SoW with a minimal budget was worth about $15,000. The maximum value contract on the T&M model in 2021 had a budget of about $100,000, but it is still active and we continue to work with this client. If we are talking about contracts that are closed and not active at the moment, then it was the one based on the T & M model, which was worth $50,000.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
I believe that in the next 10 years, the IT industry as well as DevOps direction will develop and transform, exactly as it has been doing over the last 10 years when the old paradigms have been replaced by new ones such as:
- DevOps.
- DevSecOps.
- SRE.
- MlOPS.
- GitOps .
- IaC.
And so on...
We will continue to do what we love and can do best, taking the demands and complexity of our projects to new levels. Also, in the next 10 years, one of the goals I see for Quema is to be associated with DevOps. when talking about Quema - talk about DevOps.
