Executive Interview of Ronas IT

Roman Surikov
Founder & CEO
Kindly share your feedback on how GoodFirms has been doing so far in increasing your visibility among potential clients.
We use GoodFirms as an independent and credible source to validate our experience and high level of customer satisfaction. Now we plan to get more reviews so we can increase our visibility and start getting leads from the platform.
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
Well, my name is Roman Surikov, and I am the founder and CEO of Ronas IT. As the CEO, I am responsible for setting the direction of the company's development and aligning processes so that the company moves in the planned direction. I also manage certain projects of our clients from time to time, as I truly believe that in our industry, it is important to stay involved in your company’s operations. This way, you can find weaknesses within your company faster and improve processes to fix these issues.
What is the story behind starting this company?
It all started quite a long time ago, 15 years to be exact. Back then, I didn't think that we would start a company. We just wanted to change the way we worked so that we could work remotely and manage our own time. In 2007, it was not a common practice yet. So, we met in a café and just wrote down on paper how exactly we would like to work. And we came to three key principles: self-time planning, hourly pay, and the ability to work remotely. At that time, no one thought that remote work would be a given in 15 years. We all were obsessed with IT and software development and had degrees in this field, so we didn’t have to think twice about what we would like to do.
What is your company’s business model – in-house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We have our own team. It’s important to work with your own team in case you need to get maximum efficiency from the project beginning. We do custom software development, and here, the cost of communication takes about 30% of the cost of a project. So, if you work with a group of freelancers, the final cost of the project will be higher. It also increases the risk of not being able to get the team together. Having a permanent team from the start of the project reduces costs and minimizes the risks for the project. And what is more important, all the experience the team gains stays in-house. We can guarantee predictable results and compliance with internal quality standards.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
We have our own vision for what we do. We do not only develop software; we look for the best possible solution for each customer. We look at the project from both the engineering side and business perspectives. Our goal is to provide the client not only with software but with value and help them ask the right questions and find the answers. We offer our customers ideas that can help them, whether it is to save the budget, gain economic benefits, or get investments. And when we initiate the project, the most important thing for us is to come to a common ground with the customer on the project purpose and values we are going to receive as a result.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We have expertise in finance, real estate, and business automation; we also had several booking and rental, as well as betting projects. And our clients are long-term, not repetitive. Some of our clients have been with us as long as the company has been around.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
Half of our clients are related to startups, developing MVPs, idea validation, gathering feedback from first users, and raising funding. The other half is related to business automation, which requires a slightly different approach and processes. The main goal here is not to break what we already have and to add value for the customer.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
It comes from our vision. How do we meet the needs of our customers? We find them out. When we know what the customer wants in the end, we share our expertise to find the best solution for them. Sometimes in the middle of the discussion with the client, it becomes clear that there is no need for any custom solution. And if it is the case, we tell the client so. For example, one of our clients came to us asking for a food delivery app. While discussing some details, we realized that the company was not selling very much yet, and we suggested that they should start selling their product through their Instagram account to start. This way, the client can find out with minimal risk if there is a place for their project in the market and, based on this data, decide on the development of the project.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
Once the project is completed, we offer our clients a support subscription. As part of this subscription, we maintain the infrastructure necessary to quickly troubleshoot and scale the client's infrastructure in case of load growth. For each customer, we negotiate and prepare an individual Service Level Agreement (SLA), which is a kind of code that regulates our partnership with the client.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
The payment structure depends on the type of the project and the initial constraints. The Fixed Cost pricing model is a good option if the work can be done in phases and the uncertainty of the project is low. This payment structure usually requires sequential phases, since the result of one phase can affect the cost of the next phase. The Time and Material pricing model, in its turn, works well if flexibility is important and there is a high level of uncertainty. With this model, we can react to changes faster and with more agility.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If not, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
For us, it is not a matter of price. We do not take on projects that we do not think are feasible or that we do not have enough expertise or resources to complete. When a potential client comes to us with a superficially worked-out idea, it is difficult to determine the scope of the work to be done, as well as the client’s needs. To avoid this kind of situation at the development stage, we have business analysts. They work with the client, gathering their requirements in terms of budget, time, and quality. And if at this stage, it turns out that these сonstraints are not feasible, we do not take on the project.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2021?
Well, in 2021, the price range started at around $30,000 for a project and ended at $500,000.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
We believe that information technology makes both business and life more productive and convenient and creates a potential for growth and development. We will continue to be a reliable partner and create value for our customers.
