Executive Interview of TechScooper

Pravin Kumar Shaw
Founder & COO
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
TechScooper is a full-stack mobile, web and software development agency established in 2017. Operating from Kolkata, India, with a team of 23+ smart and enthusiastic masterminds working together, we have successfully delivered 100+ projects globally. Our products and services offerings include Website development, Native iOS app development, Android app development, Hybrid app development, Web application development, Software development etc. I, Pravin Kumar Shaw, am the Co-Founder of Techscooper. Being a Chief Operating Officer, and interested in technologies, I help the team in research and analysis of projects. I also used to deal with Marketing and Sales. We work to ensure each client, irrespective of the budget and size is treated as the top priority. Our sole mission is to provide solutions that bring value and profitability to our clients business.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
During our graduation days, our team were selected on finale of some championship in IIT Bombay. There, we conceived the idea to start our own business, a service-based company that can help businesses/Startups grow. We started our business as a Web and Software Development Company. During this phase, when we connected to multiple SME companies and Startups, most people were not able to get the product as per their demands. Since the beginning, our main focus was on startups who have a limited budget and wanted minimum viable products.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We are a team of 23+ young talented engineers. We are a complete team of Full Stack Developers, Mean Stack Developers, Mobile App Developers, Designers & Developers, Analysts and Project Managers. We are a service-based company doing only in-house projects. If we can’t work on any specific technology, we suggest the clients work with one of our sister consulting companies that work on the same technologies.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Our primary concern is to understand the client’s complete requirement and business model for the target market. We do a detailed analysis of the requirement and suggest our clients best solution for the requirement based on our research, which may help them decide their business goals. We follow a process as well as life-cycle, which always helps the client to understand how things work and where they need to focus and create a strategy. Our motive is to satisfy the client for the investment they are doing with us. We provide excellent communication, support, management, and free maintenance after the deployment of the solution and build trust with our customers even after their product is rolled out in the market. This is the reason 70%-80% of the clients are our repetitive customers.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We specialize in web and mobile app development, Digital Marketing. We work on Native and Hybrid mobile app development, and full-stack/Mean stack technologies. Our focused industries are Health , Food, On-demand apps, Manufacturing, etc. Our maximum businesses are from our existing customers and their referrals. We have around 70% repetitive clients, and we always believe in making long-term business relationships with our customers.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
Defining the time frame requires many aspects like the functionalities needed, third-party integration required, design views, targeted audiences, major focus areas etc. Better the project scope more is the clearance on the timeline.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
Whenever we develop a mobile application, it needs efforts in frontend & backend. Usually, an app development work requires around 2 months for designing, development, testing to deployment.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
Selecting the right platform always depends on the user's geographic location, devices they are using, end-users requirements, and scalability of the applications and most important budget. We provide both kind of solution Native and Hybrid.
For Native development most of the client first used to go with Android as MVP and later if they have budget then will prefer iOS as it is expensive as compared to Android. And in Hybrid there are several platform available in our solution, starting from Ionic, ReactNative, Xamarin, Phonegap. These days clients used to prefer hybrid development instead of Native, as this is compatible with all the platform.

Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
If the client has a good budget, then we would ask them to go for both platforms. Because, if they are targeting the whole world, as per the stats available, the Asian market has more Android users while the USA and Europe market has more iOS users. If there is limited budget, we recommend to start with Android itself and later on do the iOS as well. Then it's up to the client what they decide to go with.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
If the client want to provide users with the best experience in terms of performance, UI/UX, and fast turnaround, the client should go with Native app development. For native applications, we use Java/Android Studio for Android apps and Swift/Objective C/Xcode for iOS apps. Native apps are the best compared to hybrid apps. But if client has a tight budget and also wants to have a presence on all platforms, then they should go with the hybrid. Investment on Native apps is expensive as compared to the hybrid app, but it’s worth it.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
The cost of the mobile application depends on many factors. Whenever we develop any mobile application, it has to go through multiple phases, such as Project Analysis, Project Planning, Wireframing & documentation, Designing, development (backend and frontend), Quality analysis/Testing, and deployment. The cost of a mobile app depends on the resources and the time required for the development of the app.If the clients have only their business ideas, we have to go through all these steps, and a complete team comprising of Business Analyst, Project Manager, Designers, Developers, and QA/Tester are required from the start to end, till the deployment of the project.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We have two types of payment structure:
- Fixed cost: If the client has fixed requirements and has a small or mid-sized project with almost a very clear understanding, then the fixed-cost model will suit. Here we analyze the requirements and give a fixed cost. This model is preferred for small enterprises. All the aspects of the design and development process, project management, design, quality analysis, and deployment are taken care by us.
- Hourly basis: This model is best suited for those startups or enterprises who have already developed projects but have fixes/errors in that. Also, if they want to start a new project and are not aware of how long will the project take. They will be provided experts based on the number of hours required, and they can directly communicate with the expert and explain their requirements. Also, if they want any changes in the requirements during the project development, this model works best.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
There are no minimum specific requirements we work on. Our clients are a mixture of Startups and MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises). The budget completely depends on client project requirements, and we always try to provide the best reasonable budget for our clients. Sometime, if any startups, who doesn’t have that much budget and they have potential in their idea, we also offer them our services on very discounted rate.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2018?
The minimum was around US$300, and the maximum was US$30000. Also, we help startups and always try to meet their budgets.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
It depends on the client’s business requirements or which type of customers they want to cater to. It is very important to understand customer needs and work according to that. From the revenue perspective, there are a variety of apps that can be developed like picture editing, social media communication apps, which fulfill users’ needs. Client can also generate revenue from custom ads Google ads etc.
