We are Whimsy Games, a game development company. Our team provides all types of Unity-based game creation services: 2D and 3D art, game design, game development, UI/UX design, QA, and Project Management.
Our company is based in Ukraine. The fully distributed team of 30 people unites experienced professionals passionate about their job. We’ve been on the market for five years, successfully completing more than 70 projects. Over 40 satisfied clients can confirm that. What is the story behind starting this company?
I guess you will find the story quite exciting. At least, it was an exciting and life-changing experience for me.
As I’ve already mentioned, I’ve worked in game development companies. I was good at my job, having enough skills and experience to solve any tasks. But I realized that I wanted to move further.
I had an idea to start a pet project, which could bring me more income and experience. Thus, I could open a new path for growth. However, I understood that I needed knowledgeable and reliable partners to be successful.
I reached out to two of my friends and shared my plans with them. All three of us put our heads together — and decided to give it a try. At first, I devoted to this side project some free time I had to spare. But later, we realized that we ran into something big — much bigger than our small team could handle.
We weren’t profitable at the time, so we had to use our salaries to pay our first employee. Nevertheless, by that time, we had a firm belief in our endeavor. We’ve started to look for more people, offering at first $3 an hour at Upwork. We hired the second developer, and the events began to unfold quickly.
Now, several years later, a company of 30 people, dozens of completed projects, and happy clients are the testimony to our success. And I’m pleased I took that leap in the dark, which led me to become a part of this beautiful team.

Whimsy Games is an outsourcing company with an in-house team of 30 people based in Ukraine. It is fully distributed, but we also have an office we can work at in case of necessity. Our team unites seasoned professionals and dedicated gaming fans. However, if a project requires some specialists we don’t have, we either work together with our partners or bring freelancers on board.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
Our mission is to make the clients happy, creating unique software and design for engaging games. Transparency, integrity, and fast communication are among our main priorities. The clients of Whimsy Games have full access to all the processes. For instance, they can open any project-related materials in Jira, Trello, or Slack and see everything for themselves.

Each client gets round-the-clock assistance at every stage of game creation. Even more than that, we stay in touch after the game release, providing maintenance and bug fixes.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
The client’s comfort is our prime concern. We want to be as flexible as possible and always try to achieve a win-win outcome for both sides. Therefore, we use any payment structure, which is convenient for the client.

We try to get involved in projects, which are exciting and profitable for us. But we are also watchful for the strength of the client’s interest and commitment. The client should have an idea, be motivated enough to pursue the project, and be willing to pay at our rates. Everything else is our job. We guide and support our customers, design and develop the products for them to the best of our ability.

Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
We are proud of our achievements to date, and our long-term goals are quite ambitious. Whimsy Games is among the top companies in game development outsourcing globally — but we believe we can be in the first position on that list.
Besides, in the next ten years, we want to be among the top 10 product companies globally. To achieve that we’ll need a larger team, so we plan to increase our headcount to 50+ employees. And we expect our net profit to grow with the company, exceeding $1mln a month.

Perfect app design

Honestly, there was much work to do, and I could hardly believe that I would get such a great result. Step by step, Whimsy Games changed and improved the user interface, adjusted the color palette, and graphic elements. The app became easier to navigate so that everyone could find the desired tab or feature in the shortest time. Based on the Whimsy Games analysis, we've entirely altered colors. Designers used a dimmed palette, so it didn't distract from using the app. Moreover, the team advised new icons to help users find all they need much faster.

They were collaborative, open to suggestions, willing to make changes, and overall a great partner for guiding us through this process for the very first time.
What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?
Not much. We are North American based, so trying to sync schedules was a little difficult some times.

Review Summary
Whimsy is incredible to work with. They understand exactly what is needed in our project brief. They are responsive, flexible and go the extra mile to achieve the tasks. Full of talented developers, making it very easy to work with. I would highly recommend working with them. This group is tops in my view. I would not change a thing. They have been creative, industrious, respectful of budget, trustworthy. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
