It is a free-to-use game engine that can be used to create any type of game, from mobile games to AAA titles like Assassin's Creed. It has a visual scripting tool for game developers with limited coding language. Unity Asset store, which has a good collection of free game assets, helps programmers make games without any involvement from artists. Unity is free only till you make $100k/yr from the products made from the Unity engine. After that, you have to purchase one of their paid licenses. Unity adds a Unity loading screen in front of all games made with the free version.

Unity is more friendly towards 2D games than unreal and best for small teams

We VR Heaven mainly use Unity for our game development. We plan on making a 2D version of the game first and then recreating it in VR if the first version is successful. Unity is great at both 2D and 3D Games. We've been using Unity for 7 months for this project, although our experience with the tool is much longer (I've been using it for 3 years, and my partner has been using it for 6 years).
