Sturgeon River Pottery was founded by Karen and Steve Andrews in 1980 in Wolverine, Michigan, approximately 25 miles east of Petoskey. Karen and Steve began with their first studio on the banks of the Sturgeon River but it wasn’t long before Karen and Steve opened the first Sturgeon River Pottery store on Main Street in Wolverine. Originally a gas station, the building served as studio, gallery, and workshop.

After a short time, Sturgeon River Pottery was relocated to Bay Shore, Michigan, approximately 5 miles west of Petoskey. There the store added products in addition to the Andrews’ pottery including locally made candles and gifts. As the local and regional following for Sturgeon River Pottery continued to grow, the store once again outgrew its home.

In 1984, Sturgeon River Pottery moved to its current location on Charlevoix Avenue (US 31) one mile west of Petoskey where they remain today. Over the years, Sturgeon River Pottery has expanded many times to become the icon it is today.

With over 4 acres of tantalizing garden decor, pottery, Petoskey stones, wild bird feeding supplies, Adirondack furniture, and other treasures, Sturgeon River is an annual stop for many visitors to Northern Michigan.

Puzzles That Rock needed a new look and better SEO for their ecommerce operations. I created a new optimized WordPress website with WooCommerce for selling all their unique puzzles and stickers online.

Puzzles That Rock began one snowy day during a Michigan winter in 2009. We owned a small specialty food store in the seasonal, small, Northern Michigan town of Charlevoix. Matt was recovering from an open heart surgery procedure from a couple months prior. We were struggling, in almost every area of our lives. It felt as though things were snowballing towards disaster.

That winter, we started putting together puzzles in our store, as an outlet for us and the kids. Working on a puzzle was a way for us to put everything else aside and work together towards completing something and being able to see the beauty of completion after so much “hard” work. Puzzles have a way of working out, you see so many pieces out of order and somehow, they all end up fitting back together…..that’s why Puzzles really do ROCK!

We’d just finished a jigsaw puzzle. We were sitting at our table in the front window of our store, aka “The Human Snow Globe.” Matt was polishing a new Petoskey Stone. Petoskey Stones are a BIG deal in Michigan! Thousands of people come to Michigan beaches each summer to try to find them. While Matt was working on the stone, our boys, then 3 and 5, were running around in the “snow globe” and I was finishing up the puzzle when I said, what we now consider life changing words. “Wouldn’t it be fun to put together a Petoskey Stone puzzle next? We should buy one.” As it turned out, there was no such puzzle, and there’s Petoskey Stone EVERYTHING around us!

Travel & Lifestyle

Up North Explorers is a WordPress blog owned and managed by two lovers of camping, kayaking, and hiking. The website offers helpful outdoor tips when you’re ready to camp, kayak, and hike in Michigan, Canada, Lake Superior, and anywhere Up North.

Discover the breathtaking beauty of Northern Michigan, where lush forests, sparkling waterways, and miles of trails create the ultimate playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re navigating crystal-clear lakes by kayak, pitching a tent under starry skies, or trekking through stunning wilderness, Northern Michigan offers endless opportunities for exploration and connection with nature.

We’re Marcie Wolf and Eric Davis and we love to take walks in nature. It’s great exercise, and the fresh air and natural surroundings help us find a sense of peace. We love to lollygag through the woods on our property, taking in the beauty around us. When we want something more adventurous, we take long walks at local nature trails.

Eric’s favorite place to backpack is along the Manistee River Trail. He also spent multiple weeks on Isle Royale. Marcie loves the trails close to home like the North Country Trail and Little Traverse Conservancy trails.
