The translation service was excellent, but the customer service can be improved they are not flexible. I tried to explain the extent of the service I needed, stating i did not required the service of a technician as the service would be only for a small chat. They do not adapt to customer needs, it's the other way around.

Before graduating as a translator/conference interpreter in 1985, I worked as a full-time translator in FIRA under the umbrella of Banco de México (Central Bank of Mexico). Afterward, I started the company in 1990 in a tiny room, with only a typewriter and a phone as my working tools. During the first three years, I went through floundering times. At that time, highly experienced, fully bilingual, or even trilingual interpreters served the conference interpretation world, who did not want to share the booth with a naïve, poorly experienced interpreter.

Nonetheless, since I struggled so much to become an interpreter give up was not an option, not even what I wanted. As a student, I worked and studied simultaneously with little opportunity to enjoy life as many of my classmates did.

Still, I always kept focused on my target, remembering: “You must overcome many stumble stones before you get to see paradise.” In the beginning, my stumble stones were of several kinds and colors.  One of which was that I was on my own with two kids to support.
 
At Amtrad, the work mix was 95% translation of scientific and technical documents and only 5% simultaneous interpretation. Since I was passionate about the latter, I decided to specialize in agriculture & animal production, which became a hit.  I started to be more and more involved in the interpretation arena in this field.

Needless to say, how hard it was trying to juggle around different hats simultaneously:  General manager, Translator, Interpreter, Administrative Clerk, Salesperson, Marketing Director, Mother, Father, Nurse, Teacher, Cook, and many other roles, but still with a great positive attitude! Little by little, Amtrad started to be well known as a company that offered top-quality services taking care of even the slightest details in all that we did.
What is the story behind starting this company?
Amtrad – Interpretation & Translation Services has been in the marketplace for over 30 years. I started the company at a time when NAFTA negotiations were undergoing with the USA and Canada. Since then, Mexico thrived due to the boom of its international trade, not only with its primary business partners but with other countries all over the globe. In addition, the IT community started to flourish because of the increasing number of software & hardware companies that emerged wanting to serve a new communication platform in the internet world.

The '90s set the stage for us to seize this great opportunity and move forward serving and meeting our customer´s requirements.

As we grew, Amtrad always strived to provide the best of the breed in simultaneous interpretation technology solutions to our customers. Little by little, Amtrad started to be well known as a company that provided not only top quality services but likewise because we paid attention even to the pickiest details in all what we did, thus increasingly gaining customers´ trust. Some of the largest companies that we served were: Walmart (4,000 attendees), ExpoManagement (4,500), Fundación Telmex (10,000), City of Ideas (kind of TED Talks with 3,850), Gartner (several rooms with 200 attendees each), Cisco (42 interpreters, 22 conference rooms, 2500 translation receivers), and many other domestic & international meeting planners in the following areas: ITC, Medicine, Business, Tourism, Finance, Management, Engineering, etc.  As we expanded into different lines of business, we were required to have adequately trained staff in various areas such as customer service, strategic planning, negotiation, conference organization, A/V, and different interpretation technologies.  In a ten-year term, Amtrad made a leapfrog as a family business, since my son Gabriel Figueroa and my nephew Erik López started to be more involved in Amtrad´s leadership. Both were key to Amtrad´s expansion by opening several branches around the country aimed at being closer to our customers.
What is your company’s business model–in-house team or third-party vendors/ outsourcing?
The pandemic of COVID-19 not only impacted our finances but likewise staggered our business model.  Although we had been progressing on RSI – Remote Simultaneous Interpretation, AMTRAD was not 100% ready for its full implementation as a new business model. We made a great effort to give a 360 turn to our high-speed vessel and keep all the company´s staff on the payroll. It was necessary to go through a complete reengineering of our old business model. Amtrad reshuffled its main office to allow many interpreters to work directly in our hub and thus continue serving our customer base.  All services are offered in-house and the only third-party vendors are translators and interpreters, both of which are one of the driving forces of the company.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
Amtrad has always excelled over the other competitors because we strive to exceed customers´ expectations.  We look down into the future and focus on using only highly specialized reliable technology so that our customers can rest assured that they will receive the extra mile they deserve and that each event will translate into a successful story. We carefully choose translators and simultaneous interpreters tailored to each project.  There is no one-size-fits-all model that meets our customers´ needs!  Each project goes through a screening process to decide the best solution for the customer.  Amtrad is considered a highly reliable company where customers can entrust their interpretation projects. Embedded in Amtrad´s DNA is that customer comes first, regardless of what.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
Amtrad focuses on catering to all kinds of industries: Professional interpreters and translators get acquainted and research the topic they will address, which ensures a reliable and more accurate translation/interpretation service. Some of the significant fields requested by our customers are Medicine, Engineering, Business & Management, Agriculture, Legal and International Trade, ITC, Life Sciences, and related fields.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most?
Services offered are:
•    Written Translations: Any topic and sworn documents
•    Interpretation Services:  Over-the-phone, Simultaneous, whether Remote or In-person or Videoconference Simultaneous Interpretation, Consecutive or Voiceover.
•    Video Subtitling
•    Hub rental (with High-speed Internet and Failover Redundancy Service, Sound-proof Booths, 100% Uptime Service, RSI platforms, Video streaming Production, RSI in multiple languages)
•    Languages: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, German, Hindi, Polish, etc.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
Through our customer survey, we can tell about our performance.  Most of our customers rate us with an excellent review. Nonetheless, we have a follow-up service strategy in place to address any issue or area of improvement.

Communication is critical with all stakeholders if you want to improve customer service.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
Amtrad has Digital Marketing strategies to take care of any customer inquiry. Our CRM system allows us to receive customer requests and reply in a very short period of time. Our commitment is to provide a comprehensive solution to any issue whatsoever, whether in person o virtually. Communication is key between the parties involved so as to have a good understanding of the SOW.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions, etc.).
Our CRM system provides several options that each salesperson will apply based on the project´s scope. We could say that we bill on a per Feature basis. Once the job has finished, we submit the billing information to our Administrative Area to do as appropriate with our customers.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If not, on what minimum budget have you worked for?
We serve small, medium, and large size customers. Amtrad´s commitment is to solve any customer need in the language area.  We are language consultants to our customers.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects you catered to in 2020?
Maximum USD 5,200.00 and Minimum USD $3.00.
Where do you see your company in the next ten years?
AMTRAD will continue one step ahead of its competitors, always keeping up with state-of-the-art technology and using AI as part of our language interpretation & translation tools.
