It is not hard to understand why you need to control temperature in shipping containers. It is obvious that goods can spoil in transit.

Modern shipping containers do not go from point to point with one carrier. The way of moving goods today relies on real-time information, delivery windows and weather data. Ports can change. Roads can be closed. Containers go missing in transit. You goods can move on different transport options, this concept is called “intermodal transport.”

To have an ability to maintain consistent temperatures while at sea, in the air, or on land is valuable. A container taken from a warehouse in the early morning and moved at noon can be a big, hot, metal box. 

There are dedicated “reefer” or refrigeration units. These cost more and usually run standard routes. Sometimes what you need is a high tech solution, at a reasonable price.

What is truck & trailer tracking?

When most of the trucks and agricultural machines already have GPS enabled, another question emerges:  How can you extend tracking options to trailers, loads and containers?

findyIoT Bluetooth Low energy delivers. We have rugged hardware compatible with older GPS fleet management devices or systems as well as new, cutting edge, mobile trackers. 

A BLE Beacon is attached to a trailer (or agricultural tool). A BLE receiver is connected to the GPS fleet management device through RS232 / RS485 or 1-Wire.  Over Omnicom LLS protocol a list of BLE devices is being sent to the GPS device, and from there to your tracker or fleet management software.

Options available:

  • Motion state of the BLE Transmitter can be used to identify and pair only with moving objects.
  • Accelerometer data can give real-time updates on whether an item is in transport mode or in operational mode.
  • Magnet sensors provide data or alarms in the event of a door opening.
  •  Temperature sensors enable temperature logging for “cold chain” shipments.
  • Tilt, weight, and GPS/GNSS intermodal package tracking options available

What are pivot or linear irrigation systems?

At its simplest a pivot, or linear irrigation system, is a pipe, a pump, and some wheels. The bigger your pipe, the bigger your pump and water resource needs to be. Water is heavy. Moving it around a large acreage is not easy. The original pivot systems took mechanical skills already in use on farms and applied them to building water transportation tools. 

The basic principle has remained almost unchanged for 100 years, or more (patent #1150144). Which brings us to the new era of IoT, remote management and automation. IoT offers a totally new level of tooling that fits on top of your current pivot or linear run. Most of it is sensible stuff, like flow, volume and speed, but you can do much more. 

You receive notifications if there are issues with particular pivots or nozzles (in the event that you have multiple pivots running at once, this is a real gamechanger). You can add other sensors like weather, crop, or soil monitoring tools. You can use the IoT control center to run all this in real-time. We’ve changed the scale of your operation and given you the tools to run it from anywhere in the world. 

Of course you can set pivot speed, fertigation rates and use the IoT to run predictive maintenance, but the principle behind it all is using less manual labor, while optimising your resources and delivering the right amount of nutrients. The end goal has not changed, but the tools have improved.
