Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
Idyllic Software is a Web and Mobile Application Design Studio since 2010. Jinesh Parekh and Jennifer Durkin act as partners in the company. While Jinesh builds and leads the team in India, Jennifer works closely with customers to help them manage their product direction.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
When we started, there were already zillions of consulting firms and we had a very clear reason on why we wanted to build one. Having worked in the US for a decade and employing several other consulting firms, we clearly saw how they operated and wrote about it in The Dirty Secrets of Consulting firms. We wanted to build a consulting firm that operates on true value add and show the world that such a business can be profitable and can scale. It should not be about topline. Money could be the need, but not the purpose.
We wanted to build a culture based company where each developer can grow at the speed they deserve and not be limited by periodic review cycles. Also, we wanted them to have a voice in our company as well as on client projects. We wanted a culture based on humility, trust, growth and knowledge. It is a place where you can dream and those dreams will be supported to come true.
What is your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
All our team is in-house. Every developer works full time on just one project.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Our unique proposition is that we help companies build their own team on their own payroll here in India. We understand that working with a company like us has an overhead cost. Hence we get companies moving initially by engaging with us and as soon as they are ready, we help them build their own development arm here in India. This is more cost beneficial as well as our customers enjoy having their own team here rather than a consulting firm.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive?
We are industry agnostic and have worked in Ed-tech, Insurance, Heath and Fitness, Shipping, Finance and various other industries in the past 10 years.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a web app.
- The size of the project and the monthly burn that the customer is comfortable with.
- We use our proprietary method of Burst-Mode development when the deadlines are unrealistic and the customer wants things delivered much faster than possible. Here is one of our case studies where we delivered a project in 12 weeks which was anticipated to take about 8 months.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a web app?
It is unique for each project. Some projects are front end heavy while others are backend heavy. Ideally, 50-50 is what a normal project would take when we custom design and ensure we deliver a responsive application.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a web application?
The application usage, simultaneous requests and scalability needs are the key factors in deciding the technology.
Which platform and technologies do you prefer to use in development of your web apps?
NodeJS and Ruby on Rails.
Do you offer website design templates or customised website design, and do you have a responsive website design?
We do everything custom and the websites we deliver are responsive.
Which Content Management System do you prefer to use (Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal etc)?
We are a custom software development firm. If the customer requires a website, Wordpress is our go to technology. But that is not what we primarily do.
Do you provide website maintenance services?
Yes. We maintain the projects we delivered and also take over existing applications if the customer wants to.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a web application?
Each customer has a budget and we respect that. That is where we start. Once we know the budget and the key goal of the development, we work with our customers to scope the project such that it can be delivered within the budget.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We work on time and material. We do understand that no project should go forever and hence we take the maximum budget spend from the customer and ensure that we help the customer build the right product within that time frame and stay under the maximum budget. At times, we also take up fixed cost projects where the scope is well defined.
