Iron Water Studio Executive Interview

Roman Leshukov
CEO & Director of Design
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company.
Iron Water Studio was founded in 2007 as a web development company. During those days the name of the company was October Soft. In 2010, we noticed a lot of potential in the mobile development & design domain and started to dedicate our resources towards advancing in this domain. In 2012, we renamed the company as Iron Water Studio. By now, we have completed more than 150 projects and 110 out of them are mobile app development projects. The idea behind starting this organization was to create great and interesting applications beginning with web and then into mobile application domain.

I am both the CEO and Director of Design.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
The mobile application market is changing very rapidly. If you have some original idea and see that no one in the market has developed a product or service around that, few months later you might end up with a lot of competitors in that domain. So, to complete the project as fast as possible we have divided the development of project in certain phases. The first phase is the Software requirements phase where we create user interface mock ups for applications and provide detailed description of the functionalities. This phase usually takes 2-6 weeks depending on the size of the project. Then follows the design and development phase where we create interface design and developing application. This usually takes 1-6 months depending on the project size, this being the largest phase. And then for the testing phase, where we test the application both for design and development issues, takes 2-6 weeks depending on the project size. In every phase, we communicate to our clients and make sure that all products meet the highest expectations.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile application?
Usually, front end development takes 70% of the total time to develop the mobile application and the rest 30% of time is taken by the back end development.
What is your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors / outsourcing?
We have a complete in-house team of 15 members as it helps us in giving best quality products at the best cost. When people are working on different parts of the project they can sit together and see how the whole project would look like. So, I believe the team shouldn’t be separated.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
We work on a project as a whole and do not cater to individual tasks or parts of the project. Together with the client, we create project requirements, design, test and later publish & support the application. From our prior experience, we know which solutions work in what scenario and which don’t and thus can provide solutions to clients accordingly. We also possess expertise in terms of animations for mobile applications which can make the user interface of applications look better. This way we are creating competitive projects that the users will love and pay money for the benefit of our clients.
What kind of industries do you cater to? What ratios of your clients have been repetitive?
We have creative applications in almost all industries. But I think the more successful ones at the moment are the applications for travelling, sports, health & lifestyle.

About 70% of our clients have been repetitive for us. I don’t remember a case wherein a client moved to some other company after working with us. If the client continues to offer services in the mobile application domain, they will undoubtedly continue to work with us.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
Based on our experience of the projects that we’ve worked on, we suggest solutions to clients accordingly. Our experience enables us to judge, based on the project, which platform will fit best for an application.
Android or iOS and Native or Hybrid, which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
I think iOS platform has a richer and more predictable market whereas the Android platform has more audience. Web apps are necessary for complicate business applications. Thus, together all platforms can add value to each other. Depending on the project, we suggest a particular platform to our clients.

We built all our projects on the native platform only. Hybrid is meant for something simple and fast which is not what we are looking for. We handle more complicated and interesting projects.
Out of all the projects that you delivered in last 1 year, how much % of clients agreed with going first with the platform suggested by you?
I would say 100% of our clients have agreed to go with the platform suggested by us. We always try to understand what the application is needed for so that we can suggest optimal solutions.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
The amount of work and the complexity of the project are the first decision making criteria to decide the cost of a particular application. We can also provide discount for some large industry projects that benefits not only our company as a whole but also benefits individual members of our team.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone?
We always bill our clients on a per project basis. However, we are flexible and can work out with the client on this.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement?
We do projects worth atleast US$10000.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2015?
Minimum was around US$10 000 and maximum was US$150 000+. Projects over 20 000 are usually published in several versions so that the client could see how it works, do the users like it, what functionality is more demanded than other and so on.
Which business model do you suggest to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
It depends on the project which business model will work for an application. With our expertise, we’re able to suggest an apt business model for our clients.
