Labrys Executive Interview

We’ve worked with businesses of all shapes and sizes, from month-old start-ups, to federal governments, to multinational organisations. Labrys is your go-to company for anything blockchain.
I’m Lachlan, Co-founder and CEO of Labrys. My role within the company is to make sure everyone is working together effectively.
I ensure that software teams are working towards high-quality products that get built on-time and on-budget and ensuring that internal business teams are dedicating their resources in the right areas.
One of my favourite parts of the role is getting to work with new clients each day. We've been lucky to work on so many amazing projects at Labrys, but my favourite would have to be working alongside NEM and Trezor to integrate the NEM Catapult Wallet with Trezor Hardware devices.
Many of the clients we've worked with, have switched mid-project away from other software development agencies to Labrys as they were unsatisfied with the quality of the product being delivered to them.
Most of our competitors are based overseas or outsource their work overseas which almost always decreases the quality of the end product, as we've witnessed time and again. Building great software is very challenging. It requires expert project management, high-quality code, continuous testing and lots of experience.
At Labrys we pride ourselves in the quality of the product that we deliver, and we can deliver this by ensuring that development is done here in Brisbane by some of Australia's top blockchain developers.
Our clients at Labrys provide a great amount of repetitive work for us. Most of our clients have engaged us for more than one project and love coming back to add new features to their products as their businesses grow. Our clients appreciate that we package up all our work at the end of each project so that should they want to, they can easily take their intellectual property to other software agencies and pick things up with ease, yet none do.
- They are looking for blockchain expertise
- They are looking for blockchain efficiency
Clients looking for our blockchain expertise will approach us with nothing more than an idea. We will provide our expertise to walk the client through, from start to finish, turning that idea into a working, physical, commercial product. This process may involve the following services:
- Discovery Workshops
- Feasibility Assessments
- User Interface/User Experience Design
- Solution Architecture
- Proof of Concept Development
- Minimum Viable Product Development
- Smart Contract Development
- Blockchain Consulting
- Blockchain Integrations
- Private Blockchain Development
- Security Token Development
- Smart Contract Development
- API Development
- Front-end Development
- Bug Fixes
- Third-Party Blockchain Integrations
We have also worked on some projects on the Hyperledger platform, though this is requested less frequently than Ethereum. At Labrys, we are trying to expand the number of blockchain platforms we build on and are always ready for the challenge of building on a completely new system.
We believe that keeping up with and adopting new frameworks and methodologies is key to enabling the repeated success of our client's projects.
- MongoDB NoSQL database
- Express.js middleware
- React.js frontend framework
- Node.js backend framework
The MERN stack is one of the most popular web development stacks in the world, meaning that the client will be able to easily take their project to other software companies or hire internal developers that will already be familiar with the stack and be able to pick it up.
Bitcoin has been the only open-source decentralised protocol, in this sense, that has been around long enough to analyse, whereas many of the others are still in their infancy. 10 years ago, most people laughed at Bitcoin or ignored it altogether and certainly didn't understand the value in the blockchain technology behind it.
Today, Bitcoin is still not that widely adopted, but it is no longer ignored, instead many of the companies that tried to laugh it off, including central banks and large retail and investment banks are now building their own cryptocurrencies to compete with Bitcoin.
I suspect over the next 10 years we will see much of the same reaction from industry to other open-source, decentralised protocols and eventually see them become widely adopted.
The prospect of moving towards a decentralised future, where individuals own and control their own data, is incredibly exciting and something we constantly strive for at Labrys.
Over time, the most popular blockchains will need to upgrade their transaction throughput to achieve mainstream adoption.
There are already many great on-chain and off-chain solutions in development. I believe that on-chain scaling solutions are preferable to off-chain solutions, however, only when it doesn’t compromise the decentralisation and immutability of the blockchain.
The number of integrations involved in a project can also affect pricing. When building the whole solution internally, we have a very clear understanding of the software we are building and how it works. When you introduce external integrations to the project, it adds new variables and potential problems to the project thus increasing the cost and time required to deliver the project.
Finally, the other major factor is the time required to deliver a project. If the client wants the project delivered quickly then it may require additional resources and costs compared to if the client has more time available to them.
In some cases where Labrys is provided with the resources to effectively plan out the solution in advance of starting development, we can engage in fixed-cost arrangements. However, these fixed-cost arrangements can be very inflexible when changes to the scope come up and additional features are suggested throughout the project.
2019 has been an incredibly exciting year for the team at Labrys and we look forward to working with some amazing partners to produce stand-out blockchain products in 2020.

Its Commonsense Pty Ltd T/as CSENS.io CSENSPay.io & CSENS Observer
Review Summary
Labrys offered a very different and reasonably priced day of discovery and helped us to plan our way forward.
Our project needed to be further designed and fleshed out for user interface. Also the blockchain build needed to identify the appropriate platform to work with to make the functionality of our project viable. Labrys has acted as a guide to finding the right solutions and building strategy.
The Management and team at Labrys have had to work hard to find the solutions needed to integrate our Merchant payment gateway with Visa Card for consumers.
Labrys have been great partners to build the CSENS Project.
What was the project name that you have worked with Labrys?
Its Commonsense Pty Ltd CSENS Project
Describe your project in brief
CSENS app is designed to incentivise businesses towards sustainability for greater profitability. This is a comprehensive blockchain build with 28 smart contracts to integrate. Additionally the app has a wallet with connection to a green payment gateway for merchants and a Visa Debit card for consumers. CSENSPay has just been nominated as finalists for 3 Australian Fintech Awards. 1. The Positive Impact Award 2. The Excellence in Industry Collaborations & Partnerships 3. The Excellence in Blockchain/Distributed Ledger award As a Fintech / Advertising Web 3 hybrid we believe we are positioned to have a substantial positive impact firstly in Australia and NZ. and then a Global market. Our Fintech product is capable of motivating consumers to compel merchants to onboard with our product. This project has been uniquely comprehensive with a complexity demanding intense attention to detail. Labrys input from early days has been invaluable for our development.
What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?
They were probably the best Australian organisation to build the CSENS Project, we received genuine concern for our project and all of its outcomes. We often asked them to look into new ways to develop our (very out of the box) Project; we really were pushing the boundaries and needed understanding and conservative support. Labrys has a good mix of conservative consideration whilst being brave enough to look into how innovative solutions can be effectively implemented.
What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?
It would be wrong to expect Labrys to do things that were out of their scope eg Product Branding etc. They have there specialty in software and blockchain development and should not need to be all things.

Reliable, best-practice blockchain development from an honest and approachable team
Review Summary
The Labrys team bring the level of professionalism and experience you simply must have for blockchain development given the immutability and/or high financial cost of mistakes. The team have the most systematic development and testing approach I've seen from a web3 dev firm.
They also have the advantage of a large workforce and many audits under their belt such that they frequently presented best-practice solutions to smart contract development and interaction that grew the knowledge of our internal blockchain team and resulted in better product outcomes.
When it comes to web3 development, and smart contract development in particular, you don't want anything other than the safest pair of hands you can find for your code. While not the cheapest, I strongly recommend Labrys as the best value for money web3 development firm due to their consistent quality.
What was the project name that you have worked with Labrys?
PxQuest MMO RPG Project .
Describe your project in brief
We required a number of smart contracts and web3 web applications to be developed in support of our blockchain-assisted MMORPG. Smart contracts included advanced staking functionality, wagering systems and UIs for non-technical users.
What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?
They brought best-practice smart contract development and testing methodologies to our company.
They were frank and honest in all communications regarding cost, timeline and development risk.
They showed a genuine interest in our product and worked hard to product best-fit outcomes.
What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?
Some smart contract dev timelines dragged a little, but this is not unusual for software development.

Hi Lachlan! Thank you for the kind words. It's been a pleasure working with the PxQuest team on this! Looking forward to working with you again in the future.
