Reliable, best-practice blockchain development from an honest and approachable team

Lachlan Craigie
We required a number of smart contracts and front-end web3 applications build in support of the PxQuest Web3 MMORPG.

The Labrys team bring the level of professionalism and experience you simply must have for blockchain development given the immutability and/or high financial cost of mistakes. The team have the most systematic development and testing approach I've seen from a web3 dev firm.

They also have the advantage of a large workforce and many audits under their belt such that they frequently presented best-practice solutions to smart contract development and interaction that grew the knowledge of our internal blockchain team and resulted in better product outcomes.

When it comes to web3 development, and smart contract development in particular, you don't want anything other than the safest pair of hands you can find for your code. While not the cheapest, I strongly recommend Labrys as the best value for money web3 development firm due to their consistent quality.

Pros :
  • They brought best-practice smart contract development and testing methodologies to our company.
  • They were frank and honest in all communications regarding cost, timeline and development risk.
  • They showed a genuine interest in our product and worked hard to product best-fit outcomes.
Cons :
  • Some smart contract dev timelines dragged a little, but this is not unusual for software development.

Bitcoin Exchange Application - Absolutely nailed it!

Liam Grist

We hired the team at Labrys to build an MVP for a bitcoin exchange application. They nailed it and we came back to have them manage and develop the production version. Their team is talented, trustworthy, and absolutely badass! James and Aidan were especially awesome to work with. The project was well organized and executed. They were able to be flexible with the many problems/solutions along the way but also matched every deadline. After 4 months of meeting with James twice per week, and keeping up-to-date with Aidan's fast, super-hero level progress on the app, it is amazing to see it go live now! Highly recommend Lachlan and the team at Labrys for help with any application design and development. We will surely continue working with them on more blockchain projects in the future.

Executive Interview
Lachlan Feeny
Lachlan Feeny
CEO, Labrys
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
Labrys is one of Australia’s largest and most experienced blockchain development agencies. Based out of Brisbane, we provide development, consulting and support services to other companies looking to build blockchain into their business.
We’ve worked with businesses of all shapes and sizes, from month-old start-ups, to federal governments, to multinational organisations. Labrys is your go-to company for anything blockchain.

I’m Lachlan, Co-founder and CEO of Labrys. My role within the company is to make sure everyone is working together effectively.

I ensure that software teams are working towards high-quality products that get built on-time and on-budget and ensuring that internal business teams are dedicating their resources in the right areas.

One of my favourite parts of the role is getting to work with new clients each day. We've been lucky to work on so many amazing projects at Labrys, but my favourite would have to be working alongside NEM and Trezor to integrate the NEM Catapult Wallet with Trezor Hardware devices.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
At Labrys we differentiate ourselves from our competitors by ensuring that all software development is done in-house in Brisbane. This is how we guarantee premium quality software on all of our solutions.

Many of the clients we've worked with, have switched mid-project away from other software development agencies to Labrys as they were unsatisfied with the quality of the product being delivered to them.

Most of our competitors are based overseas or outsource their work overseas which almost always decreases the quality of the end product, as we've witnessed time and again. Building great software is very challenging. It requires expert project management, high-quality code, continuous testing and lots of experience.

At Labrys we pride ourselves in the quality of the product that we deliver, and we can deliver this by ensuring that development is done here in Brisbane by some of Australia's top blockchain developers.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We've found blockchain development services to be very industry agnostic. As blockchain is a database technology, it can be applied to almost any industry so long as the use case is suitable. Labrys has experience working with businesses in the finance, healthcare, supply chain, government and education sectors.

Our clients at Labrys provide a great amount of repetitive work for us. Most of our clients have engaged us for more than one project and love coming back to add new features to their products as their businesses grow. Our clients appreciate that we package up all our work at the end of each project so that should they want to, they can easily take their intellectual property to other software agencies and pick things up with ease, yet none do.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
Our client’s approach Labrys for one of two reasons:
  1. They are looking for blockchain expertise
  2. They are looking for blockchain efficiency

Clients looking for our blockchain expertise will approach us with nothing more than an idea. We will provide our expertise to walk the client through, from start to finish, turning that idea into a working, physical, commercial product. This process may involve the following services:
  • Discovery Workshops
  • Feasibility Assessments
  • User Interface/User Experience Design
  • Solution Architecture
  • Proof of Concept Development
  • Minimum Viable Product Development
  • Smart Contract Development
  • Blockchain Consulting
  • Blockchain Integrations
  • Private Blockchain Development
  • Security Token Development

Clients looking for our blockchain efficiency are mostly existing blockchain companies. They will usually already have internal development teams but will require Labrys’ additional resources to efficiently build out a component of a solution that has already been architected internally. This process may involve the following services:
  • Smart Contract Development
  • API Development
  • Front-end Development
  • Bug Fixes
  • Third-Party Blockchain Integrations
Which platform do you prefer to use when developing a blockchain application? Why?
When it comes to blockchain platforms, Labrys builds most of its solutions on top of the Ethereum blockchain. This is due to the large amount of existing and freely available development infrastructure already built for Ethereum, compared to other competing platforms.

We have also worked on some projects on the Hyperledger platform, though this is requested less frequently than Ethereum. At Labrys, we are trying to expand the number of blockchain platforms we build on and are always ready for the challenge of building on a completely new system.
What tech stack and tools do your developers use?
At Labrys, we leverage the speed and efficiency gains of modern software frameworks to build high-performing products and exceptional user experiences.
Our passion for great software is what drives us to work with only the latest technologies and ensures that we remain at the forefront of what's possible in the digital world.

We believe that keeping up with and adopting new frameworks and methodologies is key to enabling the repeated success of our client's projects.

Although we work with a wide range of modern frameworks, our main technology stack is the MERN web development stack:
  • MongoDB NoSQL database
  • Express.js middleware
  • React.js frontend framework
  • Node.js backend framework

Whilst the particular stack we use may not be noticeable to the client in the end product, it is very important from a future-proofing perspective.

The MERN stack is one of the most popular web development stacks in the world, meaning that the client will be able to easily take their project to other software companies or hire internal developers that will already be familiar with the stack and be able to pick it up.

The modular nature of the MERN stack also enables applications to be easily expanded on and scaled up as necessary, without major rebuilds.
Are open-source, decentralized protocols going to be more significant than their web equivalent?
In the long run, I think decentralised protocols will become more significant than their traditional web equivalent, however, this will take time.

Bitcoin has been the only open-source decentralised protocol, in this sense, that has been around long enough to analyse, whereas many of the others are still in their infancy. 10 years ago, most people laughed at Bitcoin or ignored it altogether and certainly didn't understand the value in the blockchain technology behind it.

Today, Bitcoin is still not that widely adopted, but it is no longer ignored, instead many of the companies that tried to laugh it off, including central banks and large retail and investment banks are now building their own cryptocurrencies to compete with Bitcoin.

I suspect over the next 10 years we will see much of the same reaction from industry to other open-source, decentralised protocols and eventually see them become widely adopted.

The prospect of moving towards a decentralised future, where individuals own and control their own data, is incredibly exciting and something we constantly strive for at Labrys.
What scalability and throughput challenges are there with blockchain? What solutions would you suggest?
Personally, I think the scalability problems of blockchains are exaggerated. Most blockchain platforms are not running at full capacity when it comes to the number of transactions they can handle, and for most blockchain platforms, it is cheaper to pay transaction fees to upload data to a blockchain rather than paying ongoing data hosting fees on Amazon's or Google's servers.

Over time, the most popular blockchains will need to upgrade their transaction throughput to achieve mainstream adoption.

There are already many great on-chain and off-chain solutions in development. I believe that on-chain scaling solutions are preferable to off-chain solutions, however, only when it doesn’t compromise the decentralisation and immutability of the blockchain.
Will the success rate of ICOs be better or worse than tech start-ups?
I think that the success rate of ICOs will likely be no better or worse on average than regular tech start-ups. The reality is that almost 9/10 tech start-ups are already failing but most people will only hear about the successful ones. On the other hand, with ICOs the opposite is true. Everyone will hear about the thousands of failed ICOs and scams involved the space, but very few will hear about the successful ones. Both are tech start-ups, both will experience high rates of failure, the only difference is that traditional tech start-ups will get their capital from venture capitalists whereas ICOs will crowdsource their funding.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a project?
When determining the cost of a project, the first thing we consider is to what degree of completeness is required for the delivery of a product. For example, does the client just need a prototype built or do they need a commercially viable solution that is secure, scalable and stable. Building software that mostly functions as intended when using it yourself or with a select group of test subjects is relatively easy and can be done fairly affordably. Costs rise rapidly when you are building software that must be trusted with private user information, that must achieve close to 100% uptime and that must scale as its user base grows.

The number of integrations involved in a project can also affect pricing. When building the whole solution internally, we have a very clear understanding of the software we are building and how it works. When you introduce external integrations to the project, it adds new variables and potential problems to the project thus increasing the cost and time required to deliver the project.

Finally, the other major factor is the time required to deliver a project. If the client wants the project delivered quickly then it may require additional resources and costs compared to if the client has more time available to them.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients?
Most of the projects we deliver at Labrys are very agile in nature. Because of this most of our projects are billed as Time and Materials. This means that we will provide an estimate of the costs upfront and will charge by sending out weekly invoices for the number of hours we have spent working on the project, plus any materials costs (such as flights and accommodation) accumulated each week.

In some cases where Labrys is provided with the resources to effectively plan out the solution in advance of starting development, we can engage in fixed-cost arrangements. However, these fixed-cost arrangements can be very inflexible when changes to the scope come up and additional features are suggested throughout the project.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2018?
At Labrys we cater to projects of all shapes and sizes. On the smaller end, we will work with small scale start-ups and one-man teams to turn ideas into physical software applications with very restrained budgets. The lowest cost full-stack prototype we've developed would be around $10,000.00 AUD, though we have worked on mock-ups and components of applications for as low as $1,000.00 AUD. On the high end, we have worked with governments and large multinational corporations where projects can span into the hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars range. Most of our clients will fall somewhere in between. At Labrys we welcome clients of all sizes, if you think you might be too small or too large, just ask!

2019 has been an incredibly exciting year for the team at Labrys and we look forward to working with some amazing partners to produce stand-out blockchain products in 2020.
