Shawn and his team have been great and easy to work with. They are knowledgeable and work hard to understand and meet our needs. They address any concerns quickly and find solutions to our problems or suggest alternatives. They keep what's best for their clients at heart. Hard to find good service providers and they are one of the good ones.

Nextware Technologies Executive Interview

Shawn Shamsian
CEO & VP of Sales, Nextware Technologies
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
At Nextware Technologies, we offer a full range of software development, IoT product development, and IT services. We guide our clients through the entire product and solution development cycle from concept and requirements gathering to design, development, testing and QA, deployment, and finally, maintenance and support.
Software and product development have been my passion over the past 25 years. I have pursued this passion both academically, receiving my Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from UCLA and teaching Computer Science courses at UCLA and USC, and professionally having worked with a number of top development teams in various capacities from software developer and architect to project and product manager. At Nextware Technologies, I am very fortunate to be part of such a high caliber team and to be able to live my passion and deliver the highest quality of technology solutions to our clients.

What was the idea behind starting this organization?
Nextware Technologies was founded with the objective of serving organizations developing advanced solutions and products at the higher end of the complexity spectrum. There are many organizations that can help develop a simple app or a website. But when it comes to developing a truly innovative and technically challenging solution or product, organizations have a hard time finding a partner that can rise to the challenge. Nextware Technologies was founded to do just that.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We are fortunate to have a very talented in-house team of software and hardware engineers and architects, systems engineers, QA team, and project management team to support all aspects of product and solution development.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
We have seen many examples of companies losing time and money when they engage with development partners that do not have the right level of expertise with advanced technology solutions. In many instances, the solutions they end up with are not scalable and have a prototype-like quality. At Nextware Technologies, our expert engineers follow a proven product development strategy with clearly defined phases to ensure the successful execution of any complex product or solution development project.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We serve companies in a variety of different industries. We provide ongoing maintenance and support for all solutions and products that we develop. And since we have a great track record in delivering projects on budget and on time, naturally, our clients stay with us beyond the initial development phase, and many of them engage with us in follow on projects.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in the success of an IoT product.
Customers choose an IoT product based on many different factors; the look and feel of the device, its user interface, the design of its software, the quality of its sensors, its power usage profile, and so on. Prioritizing these complex choices can be difficult, given the role they will ultimately play in the product’s success.
Nextware provides a comprehensive suite of product design services specifically geared towards IoT devices, including the physical form, user interface, advanced microcontrollers, sensors, and embedded software design. Our experts provide grounded, evidence-based advice derived from working with a variety of companies, products, and markets.

What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of an IoT solution?
There are many factors involved in determining the cost of an IoT project. At Nextware Technologies, our phased approach is based on a “fail fast” methodology aimed to quickly determine if an idea has value. The objective of this approach is to minimize the initial investment required to determine if a product idea is worth pursuing. Issues are also detected as early as possible in the development process, and modifications to the design are made as early as possible without requiring major investments in product redesign.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We generally follow a pay-per-milestone approach with clearly defined deliverables for each milestone.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We do not have a minimum budget requirement on projects, especially since a lot of our clients come back to us with follow-on projects that can widely vary in size.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2019?
There is a wide price range in our IoT projects. Whether it is only a proof of concept project, a prototyping effort, or full development, production, and deployment project, there could be a very wide range on the project cost.
