Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the organization.
We are Specbee and we enable businesses to achieve their digital ambitions efficiently and at a reasonable budget. Enterprises choose us when they want to launch a new service initiative online, optimize a business process or elevate their web presence.
I am the co-founder and CEO of Specbee. My role is to do whatever is necessary to keep our clients and our team happy.
What is the story behind starting this company?
In 2015, Prashanth (our CTO) and I were working together for other tech companies which led us to see a big gap in Drupal development agencies. On the high end, most US-based agencies were extremely expensive, but, for the most part, provided high-quality work. Meanwhile, inexpensive offshore developers were often categorized (sometimes unfairly) as poor quality and difficult to work with. The middle market was fertile ground for anyone who could pull off both.
At the time, I was often in the US for the company I was working for and, through some strong US connections, I was able to set up an office in Atlanta while Prashanth built and lead a high-end development team in Bangalore. So, in a sense, we were set up the opposite of how most development shops begin. Instead of building a US team and finding an offshore office to do the work, we are able to build our tight-knit development team in Bangalore first. And only then did we begin to build our US team. The model ended up working wonderfully.
Since then we’ve become one of the top contributors in the world to the core Drupal platform - as in we’re helping write the code that everyone uses when they use Drupal or its core modules. In 2020 we were ranked #5 and in 2021 we were #6. I hope for us to be top 3 in 2022.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
All Specbee work is done with our in-house team. It’s a critical component of quality control and what differentiates us from many of our competitors. Besides that, we really do enjoy a great company culture – 100% of that comes from the consistency of the Specbee team.
How does your company differentiate itself from the competition?
We’re upfront with our value proposition when talking with potential clients - we believe we provide the best balance of extremely high-end quality and price. And that opens the door to all of our ancillary differentiators.
Our clients say that we are very responsive right from the first conversation they’ve had with us. Much of that is because our team is based here in the US and India which means our clients can talk to a Specbee expert at any time, no matter what part of the world they’re working from. Project-wise, we have end-to-end expertise that allows us to suggest the most effective solutions - then develop and then deploy them in a secure and scalable manner. We have deep technology expertise in solutions that work with Drupal as well (Salesforce for example), and processes in place to ensure effective deployment. The combination of all of this has helped us retain some of the largest enterprise and non-profit clients in the world.

What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We’ve served customers across a variety of industries including non-profits, high-tech enterprises, real estate, manufacturing, hospitality, healthcare, media & publishing. We have a customer retention rate of over 95% year on year.
Please share some of the services that you offer for which clients approach you the most for?
We are Drupal experts. We are approached to build new Drupal websites and applications, upgrade from an older version of Drupal, migrate to Drupal from other CMSs, and maintain, support, and evolve Drupal websites/applications.
What is your customer satisfaction rate according to you? What steps do you take to cater to your customer’s needs and requirements?
I can confidently say we have a 100% customer satisfaction rate. Many new customers we have been able to work with have chosen us because of the excellent references we have received from our customers.
What kind of support system do you offer to your clients for catering to their queries and issues?
Specbee customers are able to speak to a Specbee team member at any time of day. As far as cadence is concerned, our project managers and account managers are on scheduled calls with customers on a weekly basis at the very least. Giving our customers access to our project management dashboards allows for further transparency. In short, whenever a customer needs us, we are there.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We are flexible in our payment structures and milestones. It’s nearly different for each of our clients.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
This is decided on a case-by-case basis. There have been cases where Project #1 was below our minimum requirement but we still took it up because we could see the near and long-term vision our customer had. That sets up Project #2 with the same customer that goes well beyond our minimum requirement.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2020?
USD 30,000 – USD 400,000.
Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?
We see ourselves as the market leader for building, running, and evolving Drupal websites/applications. We’re super Drupal-focused and with the right blend of expertise and value, we believe we’re well on our way.
