As the only girl and youngest of four in a Puerto Rican household, there are two character traits you are certain to develop: hard work and toughness. Leilani’s early years in San Diego, California set a foundation of family values and good work ethics. She often found herself as the only girl amongst her brothers and cousins while they did the “heavy lifting” of chores around the house, but she refused to be left out. Leilani did not accept gender defining roles that limited her ability and would often head to the mountains with her male family members, axe in hand, to chop wood for the winter. She attributes this approach to her uncle who would often share, “nothing is worth doing if you don’t have integrity and pride in your work.”
