AI has been a buzzword for the last decade and has enjoyed continuous popularity and media attention for its remarkable capabilities. However, the speculation, interest, and viral fame of ChatGPT reached another level in less than two weeks after its launch. Several social media platforms are filled with ChatGPT’s exceptional responses and conversational instances, creating waves, and the subject has become the most talked about AI chatbot in the town.

This super bot is receiving unprecedented traction hitherto unknown to tech releases. Sporadic insights, uncanny human-like responses, and versatile capabilities make ChatGPT a highly-distinguished conversational AI software, even in its test phase.

ChatGPT is one of the most modern, advanced, and sophisticated conversational chatbots available today. In this article, we will explore the potential reasons why ChatGPT is making so much buzz in the industry and how it can become the go-to conversational AI model for many businesses. We will also discuss the capabilities and output of ChatGPT and what lies next for the technology.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT, the super AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, is the next-generation chatbot that uses GPT-3, the highly-sophisticated and specialized language model with over 175 billion parameters. It is a highly-advanced version of the GPT-3 applications and pushes the boundaries of AI-conversational chatbots even further.

It is a powerful AI model that can handle all kinds of conversations, including those that require a mix of sentiment analysis and question-answering.

Let’s unravel the mystery behind ChatGPT and discover why it has become so popular:

What Makes ChatGPT so Popular?

With extensive media coverage and social media buzz, ChatGPT is currently the top search query on Google and the hottest topic in technology.

The reasons behind ChatGPT's popularity lie in its multiple use cases, more human-like responses, and predictions that place ChatGPT as one of the threats to multiple white-collar jobs and a potential replacement for search engines such as Google.

Let us discuss all reasons why ChatGPT is so popular currently:

1. Multiple-Use Cases

ChatGPT can be Trained for any Use Case

ChatGPT comes with an inbuilt hybrid machine-learning model that can allow businesses to train and retrain the model on their own. Businesses can train the model with the correct responses and grammar without relying on an external service.

Though there is no limitation on how ChatGPT can be used in the future, some of the current use cases include the following:

Customer Service and Engagement:

ChatGPT features a built-in NLP engine that supports structured and unstructured data. Therefore, it can easily understand the meaning behind different messages and can also perform sentiment analysis. This helps businesses to understand the customer’s needs and respond accordingly. ChatGPT has a potential live chat use case. Moreover, this feature can also be used to provide an overall rating of the customer’s satisfaction with the service or product.

Generating SQL-Queries

ChatGPT uses natural language processing to understand a user's intent and quickly generate an accurate SQL query. This makes it ideal for developers and data analysts who need to quickly and accurately generate complex SQL queries. ChatGPT can also help understand a user's intent by recommending the best words to use in an SQL query. This makes it much easier to get the desired results from a query. With ChatGPT, developers and data analysts can save time and effort by quickly and accurately generating SQL queries.

Generating Programming Codes

ChatGPT can help programmers write code quickly and accurately. Instead of spending hours combing through documentation and trying to remember the syntax, ChatGPT provides a platform that allows programmers to interact with a virtual assistant and create code with natural language. With ChatGPT, programmers can ask questions, provide instructions, and get automated code snippets in response. The platform is able to write code from scratch or modify existing code quickly and accurately. In addition, it can learn from feedback, meaning it can grow with the programmer's skill level. This makes ChatGPT an invaluable tool for coding enthusiasts.

EdTech

ChatGPT has shown remarkable competencies in essay writing for high-school students and in responding to queries. ChatGPT can help students clear their doubts and relieve teachers' burdens. It can also provide personalized guidance and support to students, helping them to stay on track with their studies. With its AI-based technology, ChatGPT is able to provide more efficient, accurate, and personalized assistance to students, making it an invaluable tool for the edtech and education sectors.

2. Human-Like Responses

ChatGPT can Engage in More Human-like Interactive Conversations

Another reason why this conversational AI Chatbot is making so much buzz is its uncanny resemblance with human-like responses: (Heads up:  It can show empathy too)

You cannot ignore a technology that can respond like the below:

The model can understand a wide range of input, from free-form text to structured data such as product orders and product reviews. It also understands contextual questions such as ‘Why is this price so high?’ It can also understand more complicated questions that include dates and times.

The chatbot uses reinforcement learning models that leverage and analyzes data from user interactions to trigger self-improvement. GPT has interaction capabilities focused on chatbot-initiated conversations, while ChatGPT builds upon and dynamically interacts with user-initiated dialogs.

3. Replacement of Search Engines

Is the Super-Trained AI Chatbot a potential threat to Google?

ChatGPT portends major disruptions for search engine techs like Google and Bing. It has abilities to shift search penchant from Google, which returns links to websites with the most plausible answers to the query, to an interface that results in direct paragraph-based answers written by the bot itself.

Users have reported the responses from ChatGPT as more useful, direct, concise, brilliantly framed, and human than what is returned from Google queries.

In the article Rethinking Search: Making Experts out of Dilettantes, four Google Researchers envisioned the future of search as conversational. However, while Google preached the future of search, it didn’t release a similar tech as its own rival. For instance, Google’s LaMDA (Language Model for Dialog Applications) is a powerful Chatbot, yet, Google didn’t release it to the public, citing accuracy issues with chatbots. However, there is more to the underlying issue here. Google’s business model earns from ads placed on the search results pages. It is awkward to fit ads on conversational answers. Users cannot be given a response and a prompt to click on a website simultaneously.

OpenAI had no such dilemma and was quick to launch and test its GPT chatbot, which is now threatening to shatter the moat that Google has created over the years. However, it is too early to say that ChatGPT will wipe out Google’s territory as ChatGPT is still in a trial mode and knows nothing beyond 2021. Also, if pushed to the breaking point, Google has the option to release its own chatbots to mitigate the competition.

4. Threat to White-Collar Jobs

ChatGPT can prove to be a more efficient, cost-effective solution than hiring a team of white-collar workers.

ChatGPT can be trained to understand queries and provide appropriate responses eliminating the need for multiple front-desk jobs and back-office workers, including customer support. It can also be used to generate content for marketing, websites, and more. The technology is still new and has yet to be fully tested, but early adopters are already seeing promising results. As technology advances, ChatGPT will become even more powerful and efficient, making it a viable alternative to white-collar jobs in the future.

Threat to Content Creators

ChatGPT can generate human-like text from conversations and create content quickly and easily, which may be seen as a threat to content writers. Many believe, ChatGPT has the potential to work like a content writer, and it is something that writers should keep an eye on as the technology continues to develop and improve. This is sending shivers across the content development world.

However, ChatGPT is still in development and has yet to be perfected - meaning it is still a long way from replacing human content writers. At this point, ChatGPT can only generate simple text, so it cannot produce complex, high-quality, researched content. It also requires significant human input, such as providing the AI with relevant data and ensuring the technology understands the context of the conversation. This means that a human content writer is still needed to ensure the quality of the output.

Threat to Customer Agents

Unlike traditional customer support models, a chatbot model allows businesses to engage in real conversations with customers. Therefore, businesses can understand the customer’s needs better and respond accordingly. Moreover, they do not have to hire a team of people to work as customer support agents. Businesses can use ChatGPT on their website to answer FAQs. It can help customers purchase products, work as a help desk tool, and engage in other general conversations.

Threat to Legal Advisors:

ChatGPT is a threat to lawyers because it will make it easier for clients to get legal advice from non-lawyers. Clients will be able to find cheaper and more convenient ways to get legal help. Despite these risks, ChatGPT is still a potentially valuable tool for lawyers. It can help them connect with their clients on a more personal level and make drafting work easier for them.

Suffolk University Law School Dean Andrew Perlman told Reuters that he gave ChatGPT a series of prompts: Explain the concept of personal jurisdiction; Develop a list of deposition questions, Draft a brief to the United States Supreme Court on a topic; create a contract for the sale of real estate and many more. 'The responses were not bad,' Pearlman says.

Though ChatGPT isn’t a substitute for attorneys and lawyers, it can replace junior associates, paralegals, and advisors or at least reduce their requirements in law firms.

ChatGPT Competitors: The ChatGPT Module is not without Predecessors

The ChatGPT model is not alone in its kind. Dialogflow and LaMDA by Google, Bot Framework by Microsoft, and Lex by Amazon are some worthy competitors. All these conversational chatbots use AI, NLP, and ML to offer a range of capabilities and applications, from customer support, conversation management, text-to-speech, and virtual assistance to personalized responses, speech recognition, contextual interactions, and integration with messaging platforms.

However, what makes ChatGPT different from its competitors (also predecessors) is its sophistication and uncanny ability to sound like a real human. Though it has received criticism regarding its accuracy in some cases, its popularity is unlike any other competitor.

Limitations and Challenges

Reliability is Questionable:

Users have reported multiple instances of unsolicited responses. The software is unreliable for high-quality coding, medical purposes, or legal references.

Stack Overflow, one of the largest developer communities and  currently does not allow to share of answers obtained from ChatGPT:

See the below statement on the Stack Overflow Website

“The system relies on users to verify and validate contributions by other users with the tools we offer, including responsible use of upvotes and downvotes. Currently, contributions generated by GPT most often do not meet these standards and therefore are not contributing to a trustworthy environment”.

Can Be Forced to Provide Inaccurate and Biased Answers:

Inaccuracies and biases can creep into ChatGPT’s answers, which can have serious implications for users. Additionally, users should avoid relying solely on the system for important decisions and seek out multiple sources of information. If the data used to train ChatGPT is not representative of the population, it could lead to inaccurate assumptions and false conclusions.

Also, it can be pushed to reveal wrong answers. Check the below instance:

chatgpt can give wrong answers

Some of the limitations of ChatGPT are pointed out by OpenAI itself:

  • ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers.
  • The model is often excessively verbose and overuses certain phrases
  • ChatGPT is sensitive to tweaks to the input phrasing
  • It will sometimes respond to harmful instructions or exhibit biased behavior

The Future of ChatGPT

The advancements in AI are promising. OpenAI’s DALL-E, a 12-billion parameter GPT-3 trained module that generates images from text descriptions, has already leveled up the graphic design works. However, ChatGPT surpasses the popularity of OpenAI’s DALL-E.

Bloomberg calls it AI’s iPhone moment, and Harvard thinks ChatGPT to be the tipping point of Artificial intelligence.

From turning down an inappropriate request to accepting its mistake, ChatGPT is one of the most sophisticated conversational AI ever launched.

Since its launch, ChatGPT has been trending and is one of the breakout searches on Google along with OpenAI.

In the future, ChatGPT can be used for complex business operations and multi-channel integrations. It has use cases for data collection, insights, virtual assistance, sentiment analysis, scheduling, automation, customer service, customer experience,  design, billing support, conversational marketing, lead generation, knowledge management, and many more. It can also be engaged in conversations that are purely transactional in nature, such as those for booking flights, ordering food, and making hotel reservations.
