Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
SemiDot is one of the top-rated IT companies across the USA & India. Our ideology is to excel in what we provide as custom services tailored specifically for each of our client’s requirements. I am the CEO and one of the founding members of the company. The three of us (founders) created the company with a vision of catering to the world, quality information technology-related services. I manage the finances of the company and head business operations for the continent of Europe. What was the idea behind starting this organization?
The idea was rather simple; to be honest, we believed in improving human lives through information technology, along with software development being a very lucrative business opportunity at the time. We took the leap and created our own brand, we are all about our one of a kind ideology ‘we deliver what you imagine’; and that hasn’t changed since the inception of the company in 2011.
What is your company’s business model–in house team or third-party vendors/ outsourcing?
We have in-house specialist developers for most web, mobile, and emerging tech development. If you want your project in a specific technology, we can hire more people to make sure your project is created by a specialist. As a real-life example, three years ago, we did not have any developers for Blockchain, but as our client demanded, we hired a team of Blockchain developers that has ever since been growing.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Our business model promotes a collaborative business strategy, ensuring maximum benefit for all parties involved. We also are highly focused on promoting incubation for new startups, which our peers and competitors alike are slowly adapting to. Our client’s first approach ensures that the clients end up satisfied with an outcome for their project. No matter the number of changes, we take clients’ requirements as our first priority.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive?
We cater to all industries, but of course, there are some industries we have most of our clients from. We have had many clients from the education, ecommerce, social, and translation industries; these are the ones who have been associated with us since we wrote the first line of code for their project. So technically, the clients still working with us have never left in the first place, their projects are still in for maintenance and versioning. The greatest part is, if our clients come up with a new idea, they call us to know if it would be feasible to work upon.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a web app.
Resources you would require are no bar, which is one of the most important parameters for lowering total development time. It’s tough to give you even a tentative timeline, without knowing the requirement specifications of your project. The technology you want your project to be developed in, the scope of the project, and third-party integrations, are some of the most important aspects of the project. And by a high margin, they are the deciding factors for the total development time, over and above the generic project requirements.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a web app?
About 25-35% of the total project time goes into planning and testing, for many but not all kinds of projects. So, the rest, 65-75% of the time, goes into the backend and frontend development of a website. Note that it is not the scenario for each kind of project. It is only to be considered for a medium scale project; these assumptions won’t be a good fit for either small or large projects.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a web application?
The key parameters to look upon are speed and scalability. You can either have a high-performance web application or create one which can handle millions and millions of users at once. In the end, it’s about deciding on priorities. It is, of course, possible to make a high-performance web app that can handle millions of users. But that requires much more work than a regular app, both in terms of time and cost.
Which platform and technologies do you prefer to use in the development of your web apps?
There is no particular preference on our part; we choose the best technology to work upon depending on the project requirements. As we said above, we are keen to work in all technologies. If we somehow don’t have a resource for a particular technology, we would be happy to hire them, and even expand our expertise to that technology.
Do you offer website design templates or customized website design, and do you have a responsive website design?
We work on both templates and custom designs. You will also have the option to get a template of your choice customized by our designers as per your requirements. We believe that design is one of the most important aspects of something that represents your entire business online. So we take extra care to hire only the best designers in the industry who can create or customize designs that would fit your brand’s image perfectly.
Which Content Management System do you prefer to use (Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc)?
With a malleable structure and an enormous number of plugins, WordPress is our top choice amongst all content management systems. With the amount of customization we can do with WordPress, we can essentially build you a website that’s very hard to differentiate from one with a custom-built CMS.
Do you provide website maintenance services?
We offer a 3-month free software support service in which we take full responsibility for any bugs that you may encounter in the system. After that, we have both pay-per-module or pay-per-month dedicated maintenance services, whichever suits your project. We are one of the few in the industry having separate teams just for maintenance, and we offer lifetime maintenance packages for some special project categories.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a web application?
The cost of the web application completely depends on the level of customization, and the project's requirements (particularly functionality related). That’s just a ballpark. To be honest, giving a quote without thoroughly going through your requirement specifications is impossible. However, we promise a 24 hours turnaround time for a free quote, specifically made for your project requirement specifications.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions, etc.)
Pay-per-milestone is the best in both ours and our previous client’s eyes.  But we are open to other payment methods, as our client’s comfort is our top priority. The variables in the web development environment change rapidly, so we consider pay-per-milestone as the best bet from the client's perspective, this way, we can work out if the technology gets an update during the SDLC, and try a way to fit it in the project.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We don’t have a particular basic budget requirement, but even the simplest projects we worked for had always mostly been over $5000. The basic reason for our projects going over $5000 is the cost that goes into sustaining industry’s top business executives and developers, and of course, to sustain the 3-month maintenance that goes hand in hand with every project we work upon.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2019?
The minimum was $4500 for a simple website a client demanded. The maximum was over $1.2 million for one of the most complex web applications we have ever made. It included an 18-month custom software maintenance package.
