CodeBright Executive Interview

Andrey Shevchenko
CEO
Visit Profile
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
I started CodeBright in 2015 as a web development company. At that time, it was a one-person web development shop (just myself). As the demand for quality software development grew- CodeBright expanded to meet this demand and expanded the service offerings. Today the team at CodeBright performs a wide range of software development services including web and mobile app development (including CRM, ERP and other systems), AI, Big Data (machine learning, deep learning, etc) and caters to Enterprises, Startups, and Non-profit organizations.

As the CEO of CodeBright, my role is to provide a strategic vision, set ambitious goals for our teams that help our clients accomplish strategic business objectives, and solve expensive problems. Over 80% of our repeat business comes from our existing clients, and over 60% of our projects come from referrals by existing clients. Our client’s success is our success!
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
From the early days of CodeBright, I’ve always tried to provide as much value as I could to every project, and in return, CodeBright was rewarded with more significant, more challenging projects. Very soon I realized that I needed a lot of help and a team of young, ambitious and forward-thinking designers, developers, system administrators, data analysts, QA specialists, and project managers started to form. CodeBright continues to grow 50-100% every year and continues to learn and innovate.
What is your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
Around 90% of all our projects are implemented in-house by our core team. In some specific cases (where it makes sense and/or when it is outside of our core expertise) we do use subcontractors, with the approval of the client and a quality guarantee from us.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Simply put - we never cut corners and always build projects as if they are our internal projects.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive?
Over 80% of our business comes from existing clients who worked with us in the past. These clients belong to a variety of industries: Transportation & Logistics, Education, Healthcare, Legal Services, and Travel industry to name a few.

We are quick learners with varied experience and are open to working in various new fields.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a web app.
Every product (software-based or otherwise) has a core/cornerstone feature (or features, usually not more than a few) and without this feature, the outcome would be completely useless. When we start a new project and go through the Discovery/Evaluation phase- one of our primary goals is to determine the set of the core/cornerstone features and focus on them, they will usually be responsible for over 80% of the entire development (following the Pareto principle aka the 80/20 rule).
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a web app?
Depending on a particular product requirement, some applications are heavier on the back-end, and some are on the front-end. We find that in our web development projects, the share of the back-end is 60% or higher. Mobile projects are closer to 50/50. Our average project lasts between 2.5 months to 8 months.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a web application?
The primary criteria is to see what technology the end user is using already and what our target audience will be using in the foreseeable future. Scalability (user growth) and expandability is another critical factor. The platform should be able to support the needs and wants of the user that are currently apparent and the features that will be in demand in the future.
Which platform and technologies do you prefer to use in development of your web apps?
It depends on the overall long term goal of the project/product. We currently use the following programming languages and frameworks in web development:
PHP/Laravel
Python/Django

We choose the above technologies because they are very established (not going anywhere, won’t become obsolete), there is a big enough pool of qualified developers using the technology to ensure the longevity of products and more significant competition among developers (and thus lower costs).
Do you offer website design templates or customised website design, and do you have a responsive website design?
Yes to all. Depending on what the particular needs are- we offer solutions that fit best.
Which Content Management System do you prefer to use (Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal etc)?
We primarily do custom software development that is tailored to the needs of a specific individual/team/organization. But when it comes to Content Management Systems- we primarily work with WordPress.
Do you provide website maintenance services?
Since over 80% of our business is repeat business- we absolutely provide maintenance services.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a web application?
The scope, of course, is the primary factor as the scale of the work defines how much the client should be investing. Also, the cost depends a lot on how much of pre-development activities are involved, whether research is required. The complexity of the solution is undoubtedly a significant factor, as well.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We use all the payment structures (Time & Materials, Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone, etc.) and depending on the client needs, select the most suitable one.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Our minimum project size is $5000.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2018?
The price ranged from projects with a $5000 budget to well over six figures.

CodeBright built an IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) software + hardware solution that allows factories to monitor their film packaging cost, optimize the use of film packaging and reduce the carbon footprint.

The IIoT solution can be easily installed on every make and model of Stretch Wrap Machine.

The founders wanted to create hardware + software IIoT solution that would allow factories to install it on the film wrapping machines and track their packaging film use, its cost, and optimize its use.

Their vision described software + hardware sensors that could be installed on any film packaging machine to easily track how much packaging film was used in the packaging process to optimize the usage of film and reduce the carbon footprint.

CodeBright built an IIoT solution that is already changing the packaging industry. Packaging machines that are connected to the software – this allows easy tracking of the use and cost of the packaging film and increases the effectiveness of the use of packaging materials.

In addition to the monitoring, this IIoT solution offers broad analytics – it allows for efficiencies such as saving money and time on processes.

Fire safety is very important for every building. Emergency exits are imperative to fire safety and can mean the difference between life and death in the event of a fire. To ensure that fire escapes are reserved purely for emergency use only and are equipped with everything needed in case of emergency, CodeBright built a fire safety app.

The founders wanted to create an app that would allow fire inspectors to conduct facility inspections using a mobile app and all of the data would be stored in one place for easy future access and inspection report generation.

The business admin registered on the web app and types in info about his facilities, then he invites an inspector and can assign any inspector to any facility to conduct a safety check. The Admin can view the history of inspections, which inspection was passed or pending, can view the PDF which was generated by the inspector.

The inspector uses a mobile app, he can view all the inspections he was assigned to. He has a checklist coded in and ticks the checkboxes. If the inspection was passed (all the checkboxes were marked), the PDF is generated automatically and sent to the Business Admin + inspector. If the inspection was not passed- the status remained pending and he can redo it after corrective action was done.

The digital business card is the reality now.

The simple registration process is available at https://app.retrevcard.com/ – fill out a profile and start making connections. When another person taps your physical card- your digital card will pop up with all your info and they will be able to press “save contact” and using .vcf technology in a second all your info transfers to their mobile phone and gets saved in Contacts.
With easy to interpret data, Advanced Analytics reveals the statistics on how many true connections a person had. The Dashboards are interactive and can be drilled into for further context, as well as filtered by day, week, month, all time, and custom range to show precisely when customers interact:

  1. # Taps
  2. # New contacts
  3. # vCards downloaded

Intro:

Full Genomes (Full Genomes Inc, FGC) a genetic genealogy company based in Rockville, Maryland that makes next generation sequencing technology available to the general public focusing on the Y chromosome. FGC works with universities, law enforecement and other government agencies to conduct research and perform DNA tests on murder victims across the country to help solve criminal cases that were unresolved for decades prior. FGC also helps consumers perform genealogical research, genealogical health predespositions etc.

Problem:

Each DNA test result performed by Full Genomes usually contains large amounts of raw data with hundreds and even thousands different data points. In order turn this massive amounts of raw data into meaningful information- the genealogy and data scientists at FGC had to manually analyze a significant portion of the data. This made the product labor intensive (and thus expensive) and not scalable.

Solution:

CodeBright has developed a solution that processed the raw data from the DNA test results and visualized it in a user friendly easy to understand form (even to a regular consumer). The solution has allowed to streamline and further automate the DNA test result analysis and presentation.

Intro:

NVR is a medium sized family owned home improvement company founded in 1963 operating in the Washington, D.C. area.

Problem:

Having a large sales force and having to handle a large volume of construction jobs of different types the company needed to track/calculate:

  • if the customer has paid for the job in full or not

  • figure out how much to pay the crew and the material vendor

  • based on these and numerous other factors the commission for each salesman on each job needs to be calculated.

NVR had used a custom built desktop software developed in Microsoft Access 2003 to calculate the profitability of every job and salesmen’s commission but the software became obsolete and very unreliable.

Solution:

CodeBright has built a custom web based software application (accessible from any device connected to the internet) that helps NVR to:

  • Manage each job from the beginning to the end.

  • Input all the job details of every job for the system to track.

  • Once the job has been marked as completed- the system calculates the profit and loss on every job and calculates commission for the salesman.

Results:

The web application helped to make the complicated debt collection process a lot easier and clearer. Now everyone on the team knows the status of each case and what the next steps are. The paperwork is now also a breeze: instead of printing out numerous forms and filling them out by hand- the web app prints the form from a template and fills in all the necessary fields from the case file. Due to increased productivity- the agency is on track to double the volume within a year of launching the web application.

Legal & Compliance

Intro:

RWK is a seasoned debt collection agency/law office based in the Bronx, NY specializing in tenant-landlord debt collections as well as other debt collection cases. The firm was founded in 1970.

Problem:

Since the firm was founded in the 70s- lot of the business processes have stayed the same as they were back then. Here are some of the problem areas:

- Paperwork: Debt collection process is quite complex and multifaceted that involves A LOT of paperwork, legal notices, subpoenas, court filing and court proceeding documents etc and RWK team has been doing ALL THIS by hand! Hundreds upon hundreds of papers every week- all filled out/written/printed manually! Needless to say, this has stifled the growth of the firm. Plus all this paperwork required a significant amount of physical storage.

- Case Management & Workflow:  With 20-30 debt collection case open all at the same time- it was hard to tell what status the case A, B or C was at, what legal notice has been filed, has to be filed or even how much money was collected from case X, Y or Z.

Solution:

CodeBright has built a web-based software application (accessible from any device connected to the internet) that helps to:

  • Manage the collection process from the beginning to the end

  • Each collection case is broken down into milestones/stages and everyone in the team now knows

    • Where each case is at

    • The debt details

    • What’s the next step that a particular team member needs to take in order to move the case forward (the app guides the team through the entire collection process step by step).

    • Anyone can see the background/history of each case.

  • Digitized records- a significant reduction in paper volume.  All necessary documents are backed up in the cloud.

  • Automated document generation using mail-merge

Similarly to Uber and Airbnb- MyBagCheck, Inc creates a market place by connecting customers (who need temporary luggage storage) with drivers (who are looking for additional income).

If you’ve been to a big city like NYC, Chicago, LA or SF with luggage for business or pleasure- you know it can be a problem. You might be booked for a conference with your flight leaving in the evening or trying to go back to the Statue of Liberty and now you have to worry about the hotel check out and your luggage…

My Bag Check is the ONLY on-demand baggage pickup and delivery service in New York. It doesn’t matter if one is a tourist or a local, long gone are the days of trekking through the city with both hands filled. Users use the mobile app to summon a driver to pick bags up and set a delivery time/location to have them dropped off at a later time (the luggage is stored in a secure location in the heart of the Big Apple). My Bag Check allows users to enjoy the wonders of New York City without having to lug around those bags.

Problem

My Bag Check founder was trying to validate this concept without spending a fortune on development and having to have to wait many months to see the first version of the product.

Solution

CodeBright has built an MVP (Minimal Viable Product) with just the core features in a relatively short time and on budget and in just 2 months the services started to accept its first orders proving the validity of the product and the demand for it in the market.

Results

My Bag Check is steadily gaining market share by marketing to directly to consumers as well as B2B- forging strategic partnerships for cross-promotion and referrals.

In February 2018 the startup was featured in TechCrunch and overnight the user base grew more than 10 fold overnight!

The product is being developed/improved/expanded organically (thanks to the feedback of actual users). In addition to the mobile app- CodeBright has also developed a web application and now My Bag Check customers can create orders on both mobile and web.

Intro:

HandyMan iOS app is the “Uber for home improvement services”. The mobile app follows an Uber’s/Airbnb’s business model creating a home improvement market place by connecting customers (in need of home improvement services) with HandyMen (experienced tradesmen looking for additional business). HandyMan app creates a smooth experience for both parties, moderates/facilitates the process from the beginning to the end.

If Mr. Homeowner needs a plumber to fix a leaky faucet or handyman to paint walls- opens the HandyMan app, describe the project, reviews up to 5 quotes from HandyMen and hires the most suitable one for the job. Once the project is completed- the homeowner.

Problem:

HandyMan founder had a vision for a tech product that would connect service providers with customers creating value for everyone involved and like many startups- HomeAnswers, Inc faced a lot of challenges (technical and otherwise), had budget and time constraints.

HandyMan founder raised an initial round of funding to launch a product on a limited budget and in a short period of time in an attempt to validate the concept and determine whether or not there is a need for this type of product in the market.

Solution:

Since the founder didn’t have much experience launching tech products into the market- CodeBright team provided a wholistic approach and advised/supported the founder in many different aspects from naming the product (it was a team effort to come up with the name HandyMan®) to creating the entire graphic design artwork (incl. logos, UI/UX, wireframes etc), to doing the actual software development (front-end and back-end), QA and the launch into the App Store.

Due to the limited budget and time- we have used MVP (Minimal Viable Product) methodology include only the core features/functions in the initial versions to deliver the initial version of the product to the market in the shortest possible time and budget. Read more about MVP.

Results:

The HandyMan app was developed and launched into the App Store on time, on budget and with the agreed-upon set features. HomeAnswers, Inc founder was able to give a functional initial version of the product in the hands of the actual users/ investors/partners/potential acquirers to get their feedback/input and further recommendations/suggestions on how to make the product a success.

Update: Despite the initial success of the product- the startup failed to take the product past the beta version, was unsuccessful at user acquisition and thus never reached the critical mass of users necessary for sustainable growth of the product. The app is currently dormant.

Intro:

NVR- an established commercial home improvement/maintenance company based in the Washington, D.C. area has hired CodeBright to develop “Property Management Simplified- a custom mobile iOS app.

Since 90% of NVR’s business came from the existing clients- the primary purpose of the app was to further promote customer loyalty. Customers are now able to schedule service right from their mobile apps and earn reward points for every service call- giving them an incentive to stay loyal to NVR and less price sensitive.

Problem:

NVR team prides itself for providing the highest quality commercial building maintenance to their loyal customers (commercial building owners) all around the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Although the customer satisfaction has always been higher than the average industry standard- with the high-quality standards come higher than average prices(you get what you pay for) and NVR sought for additional ways to promote customer loyalty to help ease the question of the higher rates.

Solution:

CodeBright team proposed to build a custom mobile app specifically for existing customers of NVR that would 1) make the process of requesting a service call with NVR as easy as requesting an Uber and 2) allow the customers to accumulate bonus points for each service request- similar to the miles/points credit card companies offer (the more you spend- the higher the more reward points you earn).

The app also helped customers to:

  • Schedule appointments, get reminders and project status updates (i.e. Appointment Scheduled, Project Started, Project Completed).

  • Catalog/archive all the service calls with all the necessary information about each service call for reporting (tax and other) as well as future maintenance.

  • In the case of multi-unit residential real estate properties (apartments)- residents gained the ability to request service calls themselves (with the property manager’s approval).

Results:

With the brand-new mobile app developed specifically for the existing customers- NVR was able to gain a high initial customer participation in the app and a favorable feedback from the customers.

In the first 8 weeks after the launch of the mobile app- the new service call request process had increased the volume of service requests by almost 1/3, the order size has increased by 20% in that time and the company received a positive response from the property managers who already started seeing the time savings afforded by using the app (namely the property managers who managed maintenance services for a large number of residents).

Intro:

Discoverlist is an iOS mobile app that allows users to easily share travel recommendations and photos with friends. Users can quickly plan trips, explore trendy hot spots around the world, or build a travel profile to showcase all of their adventures.

Problem:

The founders envisioned their product and approached CodeBright with branding (complete with logos & color schemes), wireframes, and user experience / user interface designs in hand.

Their vision described a product rich with features, integrations, and nuances, yet were operating with a limited budget and tight timeline.

Solution:

CodeBright developed the entire iOS application (back-end and front-end) from the ground up in a single iteration in addition to creation of the administrative dashboard.

CodeBright also facilitated two rounds of beta testing for users to test the app, share critical feedback and offer suggestions.

Results:

Discoverlist iOS app has gone through multiple rounds of Quality Assurance tests which led to higher reliability and user satisfaction.

The goal was to validate a business idea on a limited budget and timeframe. This goal was achieved and the Discoverlist iOS app officially launched.

Overall the app received positive feedback from users.

We found CodeBright on this website (GoodFirms) and reached out to them and a few other established software development companies working with big data, machine learning, cloud computing etc.

After a few initial calls, CodeBright made the best impression (out of the companies we approached) - they didn’t waste our time and gave us an action plan on how to go from A to B and beyond.

Due to a certain level of novelty of such a product/service on the corporate security market, the team proposed to conduct research to validate a list of assumptions and based on that to build a solution.

The research has now been completed and we are happy with the completed work and are in the process of moving forward with product development based on the research conducted.

Overall we are happy with the work done by CodeBright - the whole process was very smooth and it was easy to communicate with them. We are excited to continue to work with their team!

Review Summary

I'm the CEO of an established commercial building maintenance company. We needed a custom made software to run our production department and we contracted CodeBright.

We've tried to find a solution on the that would fit our needs for over a decade, tried a 4-5 different products on the market (didn't work out), tried working with individual software developers and larger more expensive companies.

Our residential department has worked with this team before with good results. We actually were working with another larger software company to achieve the goals . Our GM brought CodeBright in to do a small scale MVP, provide an alternative and has knocked it out of the park!

The initial scope of work was pretty sizable (8 months of work for a team of 10-12 developers) and the team was able to implement a proprietary (and complex) formulas that a few other teams failed to pull off. And that's the primary feature of the software. I wasn't personally involved in development but I know this was not a walk in park, a lot of conference calls, emails etc to get everything right. The CodeBright team took the entire project from gathering all the pertinent information to development to quality control to make sure everything is working according to the specs.

The first phase has been launched back in January and the system has been operational since then, the team uses it full time and couldn't be happier! Of course initially there was a beta period, we did find bugs (not many!) but the team addressed them very quickly (if it was nothing major- issues were usually fixed the next business day or even the same day!) Now the system is stable, works like a charm!

We've heard countless sales pitches, very convincing action plans from other companies! CodeBright also had those but unlike the other companies- this team actually has actually done it!

We are now on phase 2, doing a significant expansion of the software.

What service was provided as part of the project?

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

They actually get things done! We had a pretty complex and nuanced project and they were able to pull it off!

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

I wish we started to work together much earlier but it is not their fault- it was completely up to us :)

I’ve worked with this team at my corporate job a while back, they have done an amazing job! Now I run my own tech consulting firm- I’ve brought CodeBright team back on!

With the product they’ve built for us- we are able to automate 85% of our recruiting work! The virtual assistant (bot) they’ve built for us gets a job description, goes to all the different websites, scans resumes and reaches out to the most fitting candidates by email, Facebook, LinkedIn. Then the bot conducts pre-screening interviews by asking all the right questions and it can hold a few thousand conversations at the same time! After everyone was interviewed- the bot gives us the Top 5, Top 10, Top 20 lists. Once we know the actual interview candidates- our bot contacts the selected candidates for the next round of interviews!

The product went through the beta phase and we are happy the way it currently works! We are planning to continue to improve the system with the help of CodeBright and look for other ways we can put technology to good use, to solve problems!

Review Summary

We are a DC based home improvement company that has been operating since 1963. We've used a custom built desktop software developed in Microsoft Access 2003 to run our entire production/back office for the company. (i.e. calculate the profitability of every job, salesmen's/crew's commissions and payroll, payments and receivables, vendors remittance etc). Over the years the software became unreliable, obsolete and unsupportable... We've looked for a software development company that could take on this project and bring the software that we rely to run our business day to day for quite some time! We've actually hired a 2 companies before and spent tens of thousands of dollars- the projects went nowhere... When we approached CodeBright- they were confident they'll get the job done and they did!

6 months later- after many conference calls, a lot of email communication- our brand-new software is currently in production and we couldn't be happier!

We have recommended CodeBright to other companies in our network!

Review Summary

We are a genetic genealogy company (FGC, Full Genomes) based in Rockville, Maryland that makes next generation sequencing technology available to the general public focusing on the Y chromosome.

We have been working with CodeBright for almost 6 months now and are happy with the work, communication and project management. In addition to the web app development- CodeBright has been instrumental in developing the visualization of the DNA test results (from raw data into a user friendly easy to understand form).

Although CodeBright team didn't have any background in the field of genetics prior to working with us- they are learning quickly!

We have a big To Do list for CodeBright and look forward to continued work with the team!

Review Summary

I hired CodeBright over a year ago to build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) iOS mobile app for a startup idea I had. They gave me a great deal on development and did exactly what they said they'd do! I did recommend CodeBright to multiple of my friends/family and one of them had CodeBright complete a fairly large development project. Since the original release of the of the app- I have requested a few feature upgrades including a separate web application. I'm happy with the overall experience coupled with a combination of quality work and price. I plan to continue to work with the team in the foreseeable future.

Review Summary

Our IT startup has contracted CodeBright to do an MVP for mobile app. We are grateful and appreciate the entire CodeBright team for all the work that they have done for us.

I myself am a hard worker, I appreciate hard work and I like to work with hard workers. I know that to get something done it takes a lot of work. I saw that trait in our Project Manager (Andrey) and knew that it was a good fit. It also helped that Andrey came out to meet us in person in NYC before the project began. After that meeting- we knew we wanted to work with the CodeBright team- they will get the job done and done right.

Since we haven't done this before (develop a mobile app from scratch)- we had to learn a lot of the things along the way. We are still learning and we appreciate our PM being flexible/patient, take the time to continue to walk us through the process. He also shared his opinions and his experience (if you do this- you'll get that type of suggestions).
We also really appreciated the flexibility of the project manager that worked with us! He made himself available to us which of course helped move the project forward faster.

This is a team that keeps their word. If they said they'll get it done- they'll get it done no matter what it takes!

The product has gone through a beta testing phase, it has been launched and we are currently working on making it better, growing the user base etc. We are excited to continue our startup journey- working along with CodeBright.

Review Summary

We think that it is important to have a personal connection and the fact that our project manager (Andrey) came out to meet us at in NYC in person before we went into development meant a lot to us.

Starting with the discovery phase- we appreciated that our project manager took the time to understand exactly what it is that we were trying to develop, how we came up with the idea, what we were trying to accomplish and whether our goals aligned with the goals of the company.

It was our first experience developing a mobile app and we really appreciated how Andrey walked us through the process, explained everything about the paperwork, gave the cost breakdown and made good suggestions along the way

One of the tools that we used to track progress was Trello and it was extremely helpful to visualize the whole process and the timeline for completion.

Honest, upfront (told us how it really was) and easy to work with. We are happy to (and do) recommend the team to other IT start ups like us.

Review Summary

We are a law firm/debt collection agency based in New York City and we have hired CodeBright to create a software web application for us to streamline & automate the complex debt collection process, make us more effective & efficient as well as transition from paper records to digital records. In the beginning we just had a general direction of where we want to go and what we want to see with no specifics. CodeBright team took our idea and turned it first into a blueprint, interactive wire-frame and then a graphic design (which was approved by us).
Throughout the development process we've got regular progress updates from Andrey (the manager) and we knew everything was going according to the plan.
Now that the development of the application is completed and the app has gone through the quality control- we are about start using the web app and are planning to at least double our volume in 2018.

We are not particularly tech savvy so it was important for us to find a software development company we can trust, that will not cut corners and do the right thing (especially since we deal with sensitive information in our practice). CodeBright went above and beyond what we agreed on to make sure to get the best first version of the application for us and get a smooth start.

Can't wait to start on the next version of our web application to add more features which we know will make us so much more competitive!

We recommend CodeBright to everyone looking for professional custom software development services!
