Food & Beverages

To stop wasting food and help out both the environment and the community, we built JustNow. This app helps consumers find good food that would otherwise be thrown away. And the price is extremely low.

JustNow has three interconnected systems – the first one is the web app, through which the supermarkets add and manage their products and offers. Then we have the merchandiser’s app, that checks if the products are part of an offer. And, finally, the mobile app used by the consumer, available in both iOS and Android.

With the help of the application, the client navigates through the existing offers that are displayed as pins on a map. After finding out something that interests him, he then claims the offer and has to go to the shop’s location to benefit from it.

Technologies and architecture

JustNow was built using Laravel 5.2. We used Laravel Socialite for the Facebook and Google+ login and JSON Web Tokens for the API authentification. We have also worked with Firebase Cloud Messaging for the push notifications and built the front-end with the help of HTML5, CSS3, jQuery and Bootstrap.

Main activities and responsibilities

Project planning and management, programming (front-end, back-end), graphic design, testing, deployment.

Business Services

YardMagic has a web app and also a mobile app for Android devices. The client registers on the site and fills in his personal and payment information. He then creates the lawn mowing job at his chosen location, attaches a few photos and chooses from the available configuration options, before stating how much he’s willing to pay.

The sum is then blocked by the bank – we have integrated payments with both credit card and PayPal through Braintree. The second type of user is the provider – either a guy looking for a quick buck or a company – who chooses a lawn mowing job from the map and claims it. After the job is done, he confirms it from the app and awaits client approval.

Technologies and architecture

We built this marketplace app using Laravel 5.2. Laravel Socialite was used for the Facebook and Google+ login and oAuth2 for the API authentification. The payments are integrated with Braintree SDK and PayPal SDK and Firebase Cloud Messaging was used for the push notifications. The front-end was built using HTML5, VueJS and Bootstrap.

Main activities and responsibilities

Project planning and management, programming (front-end, back-end), testing, deployment.

Automotive

We’ve created a complex system for companies to easily manage their cars, costs and reports, as well as any third party providers. Besides an ERP, we`ve also built a mobile app, available for both Android and iOS. Together, they allow companies to aggregate their entire fleet data,  increase transparency and reduce operating costs. And everything is accounted for through reports which can be generated through one click.

Through the web app, the admin can easily manage everything from adding cars and drivers to renewing registration numbers, schedule repairs and even set up insurance policies for the cars.

Using the mobile app, the driver can connect to his car and get all the information he needs. He can schedule service visits, pay fines, send messages through the integrated chat and even replace his car.

Technologies and architecture

We built this comprehensive system using, PHP and Laravel for back-end and HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Vue.js for the front-end.

Main activities and responsibilities

Project planning and management, UX design, app design, programming (front-end, back-end), testing, deployment.

Financial & Payments

Our client asked us to create a digital payment gateway for the services they provide.

We built the entire system from scratch: all the way from the portal concept, to wireframes for the user interface and programming a complete and secure payment interface that includes Credit Card, Direct Debit and, also, BITCOIN payments.

We also did the branding and the presentation website.

Technologies and architecture

The framework used for the development is CodeIgniter. The production version runs on AWS cloud services. The solution features a full stack secured payment gateway. The transactions are processed through BITPAY and WIRECARD payment frameworks.

Main activities and responsibilities

Project planning & management, UX design, database design, programming (front-end + back-end), testing, deployment, branding.

Please provide your feedback on how Goodfirms has contributed to increasing your visibility among potential clients.
Goodfirms has helped show that we’re a trustworthy company. Through your rankings, businesses that want to find a technical partner can easily see we’ve been recognized for our work and can better determine if we’re the right fit for them.
Please introduce your company and describe your role within the organization.
UPDIVISION is a design-driven product development company that takes ideas and turns them into software that disrupts industries. We help startups and enterprises save millions of dollars in operational costs: with our design-first method, we take the time to know the user base and to build software that improves their lives.

I’m the company’s CEO and co-founder, and I lead our UI/UX design department. I manage organisational tasks, and I’m also deeply involved in our app-building process by giving UI/UX directions.
What inspired the founding of your company, and what is the story behind its inception?
I started UPDIVISION in 2010 with a friend from high school. I was a marketing and design guy at the time, while he was working as a developer. We were so young, but we wanted to build something with our own rules. It was hard, but we never looked back.
What are the core values and principles that drive your company's culture, and how do you ensure alignment with these values across your team?
We value honesty and fairness the most. I think everything is built on that. Being honest with yourself and your colleagues creates a good work environment. And being honest & fair to clients leads to better software and positive outcomes.
Can you highlight some of the key achievements or milestones your company has accomplished since its inception?
In our first few years, we were a digital agency. This ranged from online campaigns and creative strategy to presentation websites and software. In 2012, we doubled our service portfolio and started providing software development. We built our own SaaS software and started growing more and more.

Starting in 2015, we partnered up with an American AI and mobile development company and began focusing on larger, more complex development projects. A year later, we started a strategic partnership with Backpack for Laravel, built by one of our own.

Since 2017, we’ve been focusing solely on software development. We’ve now dedicated ourselves to a design-first development method, which helps us build software that solves real problems quickly and efficiently.
Could you explain your company's business model? Do you primarily operate with an in-house team or utilize third-party vendors/outsourcing?
We’ve built up an amazing team of in-house people from across Romania and nearby countries such as Moldova, Armenia, and Georgia.  Since the pandemic, we’ve been forced into a remote-first culture, but we took it to our advantage: we’ve found amazing talent from across Romania and a few other countries.
How does your company differentiate itself from competitors in the industry?
We’re not your average outsource development company. We build all our software products through a design-first approach. We focus on getting to know the user base, mapping our user flows, and then building the app’s entire design before it goes into code. We always know how the final product will look before it comes to life: this way, it’s quicker & easier to iterate and for clients to change their minds about features to include.

We’ve created our own design framework called UFOs, which stands for Understanding, Foundation, Original design, and Stress testing. We follow this framework throughout all our projects: it helps us stay consistent, focused, and build better software products.
How would you describe the dynamics within your team, and how do you foster collaboration and teamwork to achieve common goals?
Since we work remotely, we promote collaboration and encourage our team members to socialize and build up their working relationships. It also helps that we hire like-minded people who we know will blend in well with the rest of the team.

Due to the nature of our software work, our team members work closely together: not just senior and junior developers, but developers, designers, and testers all have to work together on a regular basis. We encourage them to help and inspire each other through regular meetings, interactions on tools such as ClickUp, Jira, Discord, and Slack, and through teambuilding activities.

We also have a program for fresh university graduates: we hire for attitude and values, and then we help them grow & polish their skills.
What measures do you take to support the professional development and growth of your employees? Do you offer training programs or opportunities for skill enhancement?
Our team learns a lot through our work. Complex projects are a great way for junior and mid-level developers and designers to polish and improve their skills, but we also offer them the opportunity to join classes. We especially encourage junior developers to take courses and learn new technologies, and we also do mentorships: our junior developers shadow & learn from our seniors.
Could you share a notable success story or case study that exemplifies the impact your company has had on a client's business?
For many years, we helped one of the biggest cosmetic online retailers in Romania build and level up their online store. We helped maintain their e-commerce presence and handled all technical issues, while they focused on coming up with innovative makeup products. Over time, we became their trusted business partner as they handled over 700,000 orders and earnings in the millions.
What industries do you primarily cater to, and do you have a significant percentage of repeat clients? If so, what is the ratio of repeat clients?
We always adapt to the industries our clients work in, as complex as they might be. A lot of our projects have been in the e-commerce, entertainment, healthcare, tourism, and transportation industries. Our expertise definitely helps when getting new projects in these areas, but we love to learn new things and discover business models we didn’t know existed.

We have worked with some clients for many, many years. For some, we do continuous development, maintenance, and bug fixes, while others return to us to add to the apps we already built, or to build new software under their umbrella.
What initiatives does your company undertake to foster innovation and stay at the forefront of industry trends? Do you invest in research and development projects?
We always stay up to date with the latest technologies: think the latest versions of the best frontend & backend programming languages. Our biggest game-changer was going from the monolithic approach to microservices.

We often build internal projects, so we get to try stuff out before rolling them out to customers. Overall, we encourage our team members to research & learn so we can improve our skills and work faster and more efficiently. What helps is that our team is very passionate about their work, and will often learn on their own.
Please share some of the most sought-after services that clients approach your company for.
Most commonly, we’re asked for UI/UX design and/or MVP development. A lot of businesses come to us with ideas they want to turn into tools for running more efficient business processes, while some need more manpower for their existing development teams, or a design refresh and UX overhaul.
How do you build and maintain strong relationships with your clients, and what mechanisms do you have in place for gathering and acting upon client feedback?
We’re overall a very friendly and sociable team. We’re transparent and we listen to our clients’ requests, but we’re also ready to share our own opinions and guide them on the right track. We always ask for feedback and work hard implementing it, to ensure the software we build is both satisfying to our clients and to their end users.
How has your company adapted to changes and challenges in the business landscape, and what strategies have you employed to ensure resilience and sustainability?
We’ve been faced with both technological and business challenges over the years.

In terms of technology, we always try out the latest technologies and switch to the most useful ones instead of the trendiest. We’re always open to new things and new ideas, and we love to learn new things.

When it comes to business, our biggest challenge was the pandemic. We had to embrace working remotely as our guiding principle. We’ve made the best of it, though - we’ve built a cross-cultural team and even though we’re away from each other, we work well together.
What payment structure do you typically follow when billing clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, or Pay per Milestone (phases, months, versions, etc.)?
We don’t usually charge a fixed cost. Most times, we charge by the hour. Our developers estimate the amount of time a project will take, which is how our clients can get a sense of how much it’ll cost. If they wish, they can build their software in phases, which helps them phase out payments as well.
Do you accept projects that meet your basic budget requirements? If yes, what is the minimum budget requirement? If no, what is the minimum budget you have worked with in the past?
Yes, we do have a minimum budget requirement for our clients. We don’t take projects that are under $5,000.
Can you provide an overview of the price range (minimum and maximum) of the projects your company worked on in 2024?
Our project price range in 2024 went from $10,000 to $300,000.
What technological capabilities does your company possess, and are there any ongoing or planned investments in technology infrastructure or tools to enhance your services?
Since our main activity is software development, we regularly stay up to date with the latest technologies and programming languages. Lately, we’ve been working towards improving our security and learning how to use AI to our advantage.

In this landscape, protecting your data is very important, so we’ve been taking extra steps learning how to avoid data leaks & how to keep all the sensitive information we work with entirely safe.
Where do you envision your company in the next 10 years? What are your long-term goals and aspirations for growth and development?
On Mars! And we’re not kidding, we would love to write software for the colony on Mars. If that is not possible, we will do our best here on Earth. Just like the past 10 years, we are learning and growing our team. Solving problems through custom software.
