Please introduce your company and your role within the company.
Snyxius Technologies is basically a web and mobile development firm, as well as Inbound Marketing agency. We started back in 2008 from Bangalore, India. We have scaled to a team of 30 and typically we work with start-ups and small-medium companies helping them with product development. We come early in the stage were the founders are trying an idea out or trying to get a prototype done, we help them research the product, conceptualize it, brainstorm with them, and then build the whole product. We do iPhone and Android apps, web based applications, cloud, and SaaS. We are also a full service Inbound Marketing agency focusing on SEO, content marketing, and growing businesses organicly. We have office in Bangalore and in Austin, Texas.

I am primarily involved in setting up and scaling up business and operation in the US. So I take care of the business development and project side as well.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app?
It depends on the complexity of the whole product and the features and functionality that goes into it. We initially start with prototyping, creating wire frame sketches, and the time frame here typically takes a one-to-two weeks. It also depends on how clear the product founder is with the idea. If he is not very sure what he wants, this can easily go up to a months time as well because this is where we nail down what each and every screen would contain and how the whole flow of the app’s going to look like. The design is the look and feel that comes later after the prototype is done. We start with the designing of the app; this is where we fill in the colours, getting to know founders or the start-ups preference on the colours and the design helps a lot. At times they are clear on what they want, and then it becomes easier for us to put this all together without any hassle. Following that we have the development piece which is pretty straight forward; it's very easy to come up with the timing based on hundreds of apps that we have developed in the past so many years. We understand features, their requirements, and how much time they take, so the development is the easy part, everything else is fairly subjective and a lot of that depends on the clarity of the whole idea and how flexible the founders are.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile application?
It is typically about 40% on the front end, another 45% on the development and the rest is on the testing part.
What is your company’s business model–in-house team or third party vendors / outsourcing?
We have in-house team which does all the work, start-to-finish, from conceptualizing to user experience to UI design and finally the testing.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Most of the clients don't just see us as a development shop. In lot of cases, we sort of partner with the clients and not just as working together, for some of our clients, we even invest in their business as well. If we really like the product or the founders, we see that this could become super big in a couple of years, we reduce some of the pricing and compensate in terms of equity and shares just to have some skin in the game as well. So in a way we partner in with the client even if we are not investing, we still work very closely with the founders. Our association doesn't just start with developing the product, it goes way beyond that. We help them further on figuring their strategies out and how they could scale, putting together road map for them as to what the next set of development would look like, understanding feedback from customers once they go live, and try to incorporate those thoughts into the product. So we are very different from any other development agency which would just take a project, turn it around, and give it to them.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
One of them is the geography of where exactly you're focusing on. If the app is to be developed for audience based in India, then Android is the best option because of its popularity. If the focus is the US market, building for iOS first would make sense because that’s what the majority of people use there. So, it depends on who your target market is, which location you are trying to focus on. Also, if the product is all about scale and reaching out to everyone possible and I am trying to do it in India, then yes, Android is the choice. If I am trying to go with consumers with higher buying pattern (research shows that people with iPhones tend to buy more quickly as opposed to those who own Android) it would be iOS. Type of audience: consumers or businesses also matters. Another determining factor is the budget of the app; developing an Android or iOS could cost the same, if you are paying X on Android then you are paying X on iOS. But if you are trying to do both the platforms then you have the option of going native where you pay 2X or you go hybrid and you still pay 1.5X for both the platforms all together.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
We try to understand the functionality and the feature of the app. If there are any reference apps, we try to look at that, look at the design preferences, how complex they want the designs to be before deciding the final cost. Apart from that what platforms they are looking to build on whether it’s Android or iPhone. Are they looking to build on phones only or are they looking to build on tablets as well? If there is a web component, which there usually is, what kind of web synchronization do they need? Do they already have something on the web? Are they are looking to move to mobile now? These are some of the aspects that come into play while determining the cost.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients?
We start with fixed fee for the project that converts into a retainer kind of a model and work with them on an on-going basis.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement?
We try and work within a specific range and just not take in any project.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2015?
Minimum was US$10,000 US and maximum was US$150,000.
Which business model do you suggest to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
This depends on what the client is trying to do with the app. If the app is a utility app or just a game, then you are better off monetizing with some in-app purchases and virtual currencies would come into play there. If it is a product for businesses or enterprises, then a subscription base play on the app where people will subscribe and pay a monthly fee just like how SaaS would work. Even on monetization, there are different ways, one could advertise through click ads, advertise with videos, or app installs. App installs would enable install of other apps on the app and generate cash through that app. If the audience of your app starts downloading other apps, then you would be able to generate some revenue through that. There is incentivising as well. Recently we offered incentivised promotions, so customers on our app would have some virtual currency to play game.
