We hired Dean Infotech to help us with the website development and digital marketing. We were looking for a robust platform and seamless functionalities. We were also looking for a proactive team for digital marketing as we want to reach out to more people.

Our goal was to get more traction on our website, more people to help our cause, and an overall better position on Google search. We required a new website with a payment gateway. Seamless functionality and increased online visibility was our ultimate requirement from the team at Dean Infotech.

Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?

Dean Infotech Pvt Ltd is an ISO 9001:2015 certified IT Services company. We have got the privilege to work with clients such as United Air, Lacoste, Rado, Indian Air Force, Reliance, Baskin Robbins among others. Dean Infotech was established in the year 1996 as a computer language training institute. After teaching 4000+ students across several years, the company transformed itself into a full-fledged IT services company. Currently, we are providing services across the following areas - Salesforce Implementation, Web and Mobile App Developments, and Custom Enterprise Product Development. We are experts in re-engineering our client’s businesses with Custom Enterprise Solutions.

Being Director and CEO of the company, my presence is required in every vertical of the organization. The Sales Head, Operations Head, Accounts Head, and HR-Admin Head reports to me directly so I need to oversee work happening across all the verticals. Being head of the institution, my primary aim is to have enough business for the company so that we always keep looking for a new workforce to grow the organization. Currently, Dean Infotech has two development centers in India, so my job also involves managing both the centers with respective team members.

What was the idea behind starting this organization?

The organization was started way back in 1996 with an aim to provide computer training to the masses. Back then, the computer in itself was a luxury item for many households but with the dot com boom in the 1990s, there was a big demand for computer professionals. With an aim to train the young generation in the different coding languages, a company by the name of Datamind Computer System Pvt Ltd came into existence in Faridabad City of India. 16 years later, the same company was renamed to Dean Infotech Pvt Ltd with a transformation in business line from a training institute to an IT Services company. Since 2012, the company is now providing IT services to global customers.

What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?

Primarily, we do the majority of our projects in-house. However, we know that IT is a vast domain in itself with several technologies playing their role in every project. In case we come across a project which needs a skillset outside our main area of expertise, we do outsource that part to our trusted vendor/freelancer. All the people who are working within the company or who are associated with the company are carefully selected based upon past experience and rigorous interview process.

How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?

The main USP of our business is the end-to-end delivery of every project we develop. The client need not go elsewhere to get any part developed. We take care of the complete SDLC model at our end and our project managers are also highly skilled to follow Agile Methodology to keep the project flow smoothly. We work right from idea conceptualization to designing to development to deployment. We also have our own dedicated hosting servers to deploy the projects to the cloud. In all, we are one-stop shop for Web and Mobile needs.

What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?

We have been fortunate to work across several industries. We have not restricted ourselves to any particular industry. We feel that being an IT company, we should know how to code. What to code is what clients tell us through the functional requirement gathering. We have worked for Real Estate, Automobiles, Hospitality, Healthcare, Education, eCommerce, Retail, etc. The work which we deliver enables us to retain most of our clients. The retention ratio at Dean Infotech is 30% of our total clients which means out of every 10 new projects we get, 3 projects are from our existing or past clients. We value this number a lot and we always try our best to be on the higher side of this retention matrix.

Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.

Estimation is one of the strong areas of the Sales Team at Dean Infotech. The complete team is well aware of the steps involved in the designing and development of a mobile app. Almost every proposal we share with the client has a Gantt Diagram in it which shows the split of all the phases of the mobile app development along with the weeks each phase is going to take. Such a diagram helps our leads to visualize the flow of the app and how much time it is going to take.

How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?

The front end of the mobile app consists of phases such as Wireframing, Graphic Designing + Slicing, and Prototyping. The backend of the mobile app consists of DB Architecture, Super Admin Panel Development, API Development, and API integration with Prototype. We have observed that the front end consumes approximately 30% of the time and backend consumes approximately 70% time of the total app development time. Most of our proposals have similar split of time.

What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?

The two most common mobile application platforms being used in today’s world are Android and iOS. The consideration of the platform should be made based upon the target users of the app. If a business owner knows the types of app users, then the answer to the preceding statement gets easier. The next parameter could be the budget. We have observed that iOS apps development generally takes more development time compared to Android apps development; the cost of development varies proportionally. Other than these, I believe functionality wise both the platforms are quite rigorous and if a team of good developers is working then they can build anything and everything as per the business needs.

Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?

Our first question to every client with Mobile App Development needs is the platform they need. Most of the clients, know the answer to this question and we take the discussion further from there. For the clients who are still brainstorming for the platform, we try to understand their business needs and their target customers. Based on our understanding, we recommend the most suitable platform Android or iOS. However, if they have a budget to go with both the platforms, then this becomes the best option for any business to launch.

Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?

Native or Hybrid is a question that crosses the mind of every person out there in the market willing to launch a mobile app. The answer to this question also lies within the needs of the client. I personally suggest Native Apps as they give the freedom to code anything and everything. But with the introduction of technologies like React Native, the demand for the Hybrid apps is also on surge because of the flexibility and speed this technology offers. Still, so far Native Apps are my favorite but I feel that the time is not too far when Hybrid Apps will take that slot.

What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?

The cost of the mobile application development depends upon the resources the app needs. If it is one of the most complicated apps, then for sure senior developers and architects will be required for the app development. The Native and Hybrid App developers also create an impact on the cost of the development. Our price range starts from USD 15/hr and goes until USD 40/hr depending upon the skillset, experience, and urgency of the app. If any 3rd party integrations are required, the licensing cost of the same is directly added to the proposal cost along with the implementation cost. Google Store costs USD 25 a time fee, but Apple Store costs USD 99 per year to host the app.

What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)

We prefer to do the Pay Per Hour model with our clients. We have resources available across the spectrum of technologies with varied experiences. The clients are free to interview them before the project starts and if selected, the client can work directly with those resources on day to day basis. We do weekly invoices in this model. There could be a scenario where clients would like to do a Fixed Cost Model and we are open to that as well in which we split the projected cost across different milestones.

Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?

Yes, we do believe to take projects which meet the basic budget requirements because it takes efforts to set up a team for any project and if the project is not of considerable size then it becomes difficult to provide dedicated services to the client. As a company, we aim to get Mobile App Development projects which stretch across 10 to 12 weeks at least. This time is required to cover all the phases of Mobile app development. Cost-wise for new app development, the budget should be atleast USD 10,000.

What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2019?

2019 was a fantastic year for Dean Infotech. We grew in revenue, in headcount, in the number of clients, and in ticket size as well. The smallest project we did was to develop an Android application for the field resources of a business to log the orders they get from the network stores. The pricing of this app was USD 10,000. The biggest project of 2019 is still in progress and it involves complete end-to-end development of a medical emergency app that users (basically students) can download and add their near and dears ones to let them know about the whereabouts. There are geofencing features in the app to track students and raise alarms if the device goes outside those regions. There are several other in-built features and in-app purchases. Both Android and iOS native apps are in progress and the ticket size for this app is USD 45,000.

Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?

SaaS based models are best suited in today’s world. Come up with an idea that solves the potential problem of the users and I am sure users will be willing to pay monthly subscription fees to solve their problem. One such area could be to develop an app to remind people about the tasks they need to do. Let's suppose they tag Market in their app and add a reminder for Market. When they cross that particular Market physically, a reminder should be sent to the users to let them know about the task. Such apps are quite simple to make but can be very useful for people and can help in generating revenues for the app owner.
