Executive Interview of Yalantis
Alexander Kholodov
CEO and Co-Founder
Please introduce your company and your role within the company.
Yalantis is a mobile app design and development company. We excel in customer-centered user experience and user interface design. We focus on metrics in our approach to app development. We determine key performance indicators before developing a product. They allow us to understand a product’s objectives and design solutions to achieve those objectives. We optimise our products at every stage of their development to give our clients maximum value for minimum effort.
We work with small and medium size businesses and startups. Our company’s brand is well-known among executives in New York, Silicon Valley, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo, and Kiev.

Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app?
Generally speaking, the time frame of developing a mobile app depends on three factors: 1) business idea, 2) business objective, and 3) technical complexity. Implementing particularly complex technical components may require a lot of time, so we distinguish these components in the estimate to suggest our clients more cost-effective ways. We can offer to alleviate a component, use an alternative solution, or move a given feature to the next app versions if possible. We specify a rough maximum and minimum amount of hours required to accomplish a given task. These values can give client some understanding of the scope of work.
How much effort in terms of time goes to develop the front end and back of a mobile app?
Just like there is no one-size-fits-all solution for all market segments, there is no one-size-fits-all for all mobile apps. For example, implementing advanced video, audio, and graphics on the front end may take longer than developing backend for the same iOS or Android app. And in some apps backend does all the heavy lifting and therefore requires more effort.
What is your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors / outsourcing?
Yalantis has more than 100 specialists working in a shared office space. Our team includes iOS, Android and web developers, designers and quality assurance engineers, project managers, business analysts and marketers. Organizing all these people in house is highly important as it lets us freely collaborate with each other, ensure greater transparency, and experience exchange.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
Before our clients invest in developing and launching a new product they should thoroughly analyze the market and study their competitors. Our competitive research and benchmarking gives our clients such understanding of the competition that no other app development company can provide.
We guarantee that our product design will deliver the best user experience among existing alternatives.
We are fully transparent in our way of thinking and we show results of our work. Anybody can read articles on our blog, view code samples in our Github repositories and see our designs on Dribbble and Behance.

What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
The key parameters include the target market, the app development costs, and the speed of return on investment.
iOS is more popular than Android in key Western markets including the US, the UK, Denmark, Australia, Canada, and Ireland. Even though Google’s Android remains the dominant leader globally, most entrepreneurs start their application development from the iOS platform because they’re targeting markets dominated by Apple’s App Store. It is well known that European and North American markets support stronger app sales and more in-app purchases, meaning higher average revenue per user.
However, there are other target markets where it may make sense to start with Android. Countries where Android currently dominates include Mexico, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, China, India, and South Korea. Android is experiencing considerable growth in these regions.

What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
The cost of a mobile application depends on a number of factors that are needed to successfully implement an idea, and include needed talent, the type and complexity of the product, and post-release support.
Complexity of a product is the main factor when it comes to counting app development costs. By complexity I mean technical complexity, the number of devices and OS, and custom designs and animations.
But app development budget isn’t solely comprised of the funds spent on the actual development activities. Online entrepreneurs should also take into account all the money that goes into growing a product. Just like with any business, an app needs updates, customer support, backend servers maintenance, cloud hosting, and even legal support, not to mention app marketing and promotion that make a huge impact on the product’s success.

What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients?
Our payment structure largely depends on the project requirements. But most often we follow the Time and Material (T&M) engagement model in which our clients are billed per hour for the time spent by our team working on a certain set of tasks.
For small app development projects with clear requirements, set specifications and defined timelines, we follow Fixed Budget payment structure. Usually this model is applicable for startups with a limited budget willing to test their business idea with a minimum viable product (MVP).

Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement?
Our minimum budget requirement is $30,000. But sometimes we take on app design projects that exclude app development and cost much less.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2015?
$50,000 - $200,000
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
This is individual for every project. If we’re talking about startups, I would recommend to focus on building a product that people would be willing to use and pay for. Focusing on making money, rather than growth may doom an early-stage startup from ever achieving scale.
Also, lately we’ve been working with small businesses that create mobile apps to stay competitive. Mobile apps save businesses money in the long-term and reduce the amount of time their staff needs to spend fulfilling orders, taking payments or completing bookings.
