Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
As you probably mentioned in the title I have the pleasure to be the CEO of  Gecko Dynamics. My role within the company is to simply solve all the problems that may have an impact on our business. It’s hard to describe my daily work, every day is different and brings new tasks to deal with. Frankly, my biggest role is to make all this happen and make sure that all the words that we gave to our partners will be kept, no matter what will come up ahead.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
Our company can be described as a boutique software agency that has vast experience in the aviation, manufacturing, and logistics industries. To be honest the whole idea behind our company is to be a reliable partner for all kinds of companies that needs software services. We’ve been bored with the “traditional approach”, what I meant by that is that we don’t perceive our clients as a bag filled with money, let’s be honest this is one of the most competitive markets. That means that there are many companies similar to ours. The question was, do we have to treat people who came to us strictly as a client? The answer is no, we can be partners, today's world is changing rapidly, so it’s easy to stay behind, this business is not only about making money but is also about making difference. People are more dedicated to someone who is closer, who is not seen as the next batch of money, that why we have partners, we work, grow and achieve goals together, both sides have an interest in being successful, right?
What is your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
In my opinion,  an in-house team is essential, you can’t grow if you don’t know the people that you work with. Building a team is not only about combining people with skills that match requirements, it’s all about gathering people that want to be a part of something bigger, that will be a part of their teams, that will see a bigger picture and achieve success together and if something goes wrong they won’t look for someone to blame, but the solutions that keep everything going.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
We work with, not only for the client. Sometimes it’s hard to disagree, but if you want to be a real partner you can’t accept every idea simply to get money. In short terms, yep you will earn some money, but let’s be honest, someone who wants our services probably is looking for solutions that may help with solving their problems, not someone’s acceptance. This means that we can’t always agree with all of the aspects of the project, if we see any flaws we’re looking for a solution,  not the next paycheck. If our partners won’t grow and achieve their goals with what we do why would we?
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive?
In general, most of our projects are for Manufacturing & Logistics, but we work with almost all kinds of companies all around the world. In case of repetitiveness, it’s hard to tell, there are always some common tasks and phases in software development, but all of these projects and people behind them have different needs, what makes them unique is their situation and in this case, we can’t speak about receptiveness.

How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of software?
That depends on the project - there are projects that require more frontend work (e.g. with sophisticated interfaces, tricky design elements, animations, or where most of the logic is done by frontend application) or projects that are more complex on the backend (e.g. due to advanced calculations, 3rd party integrations, etc.)
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right framework for developing software?
  • Size of the system 
  • Specific operations the software has to perform 
  • Purpose of the software 
  • Other specific requirements of the software that may be impacted by various frameworks 
  • How well the framework addresses these parameters 
  • Popularity of the framework - whether it’s still being developed or is it an outdated
Which languages & frameworks do you prefer to use in development of software?
Our core expertise is Java and .NET in the case of the backend, and Angular and React.js for frontend, but we also work with other languages, frameworks, and tools, such as Node.js, Vue.js, PHP (Laravel, Symfony, Yii2), Python (Django), C++.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of software?
  • Scope of the software
  • Workload required to complete that scope by certain team
  • Complexity of operations the software has to perform
  • Amount of 3rd party integrations and their complexity
  • Design (tricky designs can significantly increase the frontend development cost)

What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
For scoped projects, we work on a Time & Materials basis and Fixed Price basis, and for outstaffing / team extension type of projects we work on a monthly rate basis that is specified for each member of the team.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
We don’t have a minimum budget, which doesn’t mean we take in any project. We treat every project as an opportunity and evaluate it individually and then decide whether we want to work on it or not.

Event management software called 123Signup is a complex SaaS system serving two main purposes – event management and membership plan management. The platform is currently serving numbers of various entities and organizations such as private companies, event organizers universities, local governments as well as NGOs and non-profit organizations and is recognized as one of the market leaders in the area of event management software.

The owner of the product reached out to us asking to take over the project after another company which failed to deliver satisfying results in terms of quality and deadlines. The very first version of the platform was developed a long time before that and was already one of the recognizable products in its industry at that time and . Therefore, there was a lot of legacy code that we had to take over and rewrite or refactor. The project also came with a lot of legacy technologies and frameworks, which also had to be rewritten into the modern stack.

Since there was a huge piece of legacy code, it was a natural step to start with extensive and thorough code audit. As a result, there were identified issues and parts of the system to be refactored or coded from scratch, which were later on prioritized. In the course of code refactoring, we also developed many brand new modules as well as redesigned the existing ones, both in terms of modern UI and optimizing the existing logic and processes.

The system and its main modules was rewritten into modern stack, after which we continued to work with other legacy modules and develop the new ones. At the same time, we were also providing the maintenance, support, DevOps and database administration services.

To sum up, we provided all the services listed above, working at every single bit of the system which includes:

  • Event management – highly sophisticated and advanced module covering all aspects of event management. That being said, everything from creating, through scheduling and calendars, to complex overview of participants and their management.
  • Membership management – enabling membership management to various entities using 123Signup as a SaaS platform. The module enables to create membership programs of various kind by admins and sell them to the users.
  • Donations module, which enables the users to make a donation for chosen entities, as well as creating ad banners in the web that redirects the potential donators to the donation module
  • Extensive reporting of various data and information gathered across the system
  • Website-builder enabling associations using the platform to create their own website through visual builder basing on predefined templates
  • Member directory, allowing members to search for other members and see their connotations with the organizations they are participating in
  • Online purchases of subscription plans (event / membership management)
  • Extensive billing module

Volo Innovations was a startup based out of Vancouver, created by Nikki and Barry Layton in 2007 who at the time were gym owners looking for a solution to manage their gym and its operations. Since they could not find anything on the market that would satisfy their needs, they decided to create a custom SaaS application for themselves and other gym owners.

Gecko Dynamics helped Volo Innovations by developing a whole product (called by itself Volo) from scratch and maintaining its further development & support. Over the next years, Volo became a successful product and one of the leading applications for gym management in US and Canada.

Spectrum Wellness reached out to Gecko Dynamics seeking an urgent action on developing the frontend part of their brand new platform, which was scheduled to hit the market by the end of 2018. That happened, because Spectrum realised, that the in-house development team is out of its capacity and will not manage to release the complete product by the end of the year, and therefore needed an urgent help with getting the things delivered, as the whole marketing campaign was landing at the same time.


Gecko Dynamics took up the challenge and has worked closely with Spectrum Wellness development team on a frontend part to help delivering the product within the required time. Gecko Dynamics team was set to work closely with Spectrum in-house development team on the frontend part of the application.

Therefore, there were 2 teams in 2 locations working on the same product, which required strong communication between the teams and properly distributed scope of work to both teams. It is worth mention, that both teams were working under pressure of fixed deadline and the work was necessary to progress within the requested pace.

TekeTeke is an m-commerce digital ecosystem for focused on online shopping and delivery in Nairobi, Kenya, developed for the Kenyan enterprise Greenskies Investment as another project in their investment portfolio.

We took over the development of this project on demand of the client, after previous software development company failed to deliver the project within the desired timeframe, cost and quality. The product couldn’t be deployed to the market because of flawful application and our job was to bring the originally desired quality and make it running flawlessly. What is important to mention, while other companies contacted by the client were advising to develop the app from scratch with higher cost, Gecko Dynamics was the only one capable of working on the provided source code and refactor it instead of coding from scratch.
 

We started with thorough code audit to identify the areas for improvement and grouped them in various priority categories to give the client an overview of which improvements are critical and most urgent before deploying the app on the market and which can wait for later. After the code review, the client asked us to proceed with our findings which ended up in performing multiple tasks and improvements in mobile, backend & frontend parts of the system consisting of 4 main areas:

Native mobile application for iOS & Android for regular users (buyers):

  • Browsing for various shops and their products basing text search and products categories (food, clothes, electric products, beauty shops, sports, etc.). Sellers are the physical shops located in across Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Making the purchases choosing from products available in the shop
  • Paying via integrated mobile payment gateways that are specific and well-known in Africa, such as M-Pesa and Pesapal
  • Setting the delivery address
  • Signing up with email or Facebook, creating user profile
  • Showing orders history
  • Ability to use promo codes to get the discounts
  • Livechat with the app’s support consultants

The client, which is a London-based startup, contacted us in early February 2018 looking for software house to take a full care of their new startup. What they had, was a concept of a social platform working as a web app on which companies can look for other companies to do business with. What the client needed, was a company that will provide an end-to-end process, starting from workshops and business analysis, through UX wireframing and design, to software development, QA and maintenance. What we are particularly proud of, is that the client has chosen Gecko Dynamics out of over 20 companies they contacted.

Given the requirements for the platform, Gecko Dynamics started with thorough business & technical analysis of the platform requirements by conducting the Workshops together with the client. As a result of intensive brainstorming meetings conducted with the client’s team over 3 days, the exact scope has been agreed, followed by UX mockups and Specification of Development. As a next step, both teams worked closely on creating the appealing UI design. Having that part accomplished, the team commenced software development process in the Agile process, dividing the whole scope into 2-week sprints, with QA process happening in parallel.

In the end, we created the whole platform, which functionalities include:

The client reached out to us after the previous dev company failed to deliver in terms of quality and deadline, which makes it a legacy project. In particular, the client complained about the slowly working website and constant crashes, as well as layout full of bugs. At a glance it may not sound as a very unique situation, but in the addition the client decided to set up his own development team and needed a company that will refactor the whole application, repair it, implement outstanding features and prepare it for the upcoming team who were meant to kick off from September 2018.

Therefore, our job was to not only finish what the previous team failed to deliver, but also to prepare the application and its code in a way that will make it easy for the new team to start working with it. We started with thorough analysis of the current technological situation and code audit, which discovered a lot of inconsistencies and errors in the code and overall architecture, which were causing constant crashes and were also slowing down the site. Following the audit results, we had to refactor the major part of the application, implement the outstanding features, prepare everything for the new team and conduct a step-by-step handover.

We partnered with Gecko Dynamics because we needed to develop a domain registrar software
and they seemed to have the closest understanding of the business and technical aspects of
such software. The domain registration industry has a very sophisticated requirements so we
needed a partner who can understand them and has a very deep technical knowledge. They
showed both in the initial meetings.
After being contracted, Gecko Dynamics developed a custom platform from scratch in Java. In
addition, they also provided business and technical analysis which potentially saved us a lot of
money as they indicated threats which we were not aware of. They also did the UI/UX design,
testing and provided project management and maintenance as well. The platform turned out to be
successful and it currently serves over 65,000 customers.
What I appreciate most is that they were very thoughtful from the beginning, they didn’t leave the
questions unanswered and really showed a great attitude to really understand all high and low-
level details. I found it very impressive because I’m in IT industry for 20 years already and I’ve
been working with many different software development companies, and with various results, but

it was the first time I saw an external company caring that much. Sometimes I had a feeling like
they were caring about how to make the most optimal solutions more than me.
After Phase 1, I decided that I want stay with this company for the next phases and for and other
projects. They turned out to be a perfect mixture of attention, knowledge, cost and performance.
They also communicated very well and I knew what was going on at every stage of the project,
and if there were problems or issues they were always able to resolve it in a healthy-working way
for both parties.
I work with them for 12 years already and am very happy with everything they provided so far.

They were very thoughtful from the beginning, they asked only relevant questions and they never left my questions unanswered. Before I partnered with them I thought I will need to push them in communication since that was my previous experience, but that was never required.

I can’t think of anything significant right now. Obviously, in every projects, especially that long there are ups and downs but in my opinion it’s not really possible to never had a bad day or to never make a mistake, I think what matters is how a person or company recovers from it and how it can manage possible issues, and although there were very few of them they managed them in a very healthy way so that everyone was happy

I hold a position in the R&D department as a Product Owner. My background is IT (hardware, software, networks, engineering, integration). For some years I have acted as Project Manager for IT projects .
Our Company decided to expand our service offering adding a new core electronic service. The challenge was to create a scalable , extendable, robust responsive middleware and integrate the underlying technology with the upper public service layer.
We have followed a typical RFP cycle for this project and Gecko Dynamics won the contract.
During past 5 months, Gecko Dynamics has delivered the middleware and it has been pushed to production test successfully. We expect to go live with the service by the end of the year.
The cooperation between the teams is excellent, Gecko Dynamics remains responsive and supportive during the pre-launch step, that in turn led to Phase 2 of this project (extension and additional features integration).
In general, I was able to reach Gecko's Project Manager well out of office hours, something that I consider as invaluable when you are deploying a service. Sometimes you need that security from your technology partner.
Over all the cooperation is excellent, the only note that i would made is about Documentation. They are supportive, responsive and will spend time with you but if you wish to follow strict Prince 2 principals on project closure you have to adapt their documentation and generate the Administration and Key User manuals.

Review Summary

I hired Gecko in order to develop a mobile app. From the beginning, the team was great with communication and establishing targets and deliverables. I was working under a tight deadline, so the team respected that and diverted resources properly to make sure it was completed on time. I was impressed with all the groups, from the UI/UX, to backend, frontend, to designing logos, etc.

The team was very professional and was patient with me, coming from a non-technical background and at times not knowing what is required. Midway through the project, I wanted to completely change the design of it because I wasn't completely satisfied with the aesthetics. The team managed to change and overhaul the entire thing within a matter of a week, and now it looks amazing!

The beta that was delivered exceeded expectations, and was exactly as we had planned. The team is continuing to make great progress and tweaks, and they have been exceptionally capable.
