itCraft sp. z o.o. Reviews

Our collaboration is highly satisfying.

We've decided to expand our project further and we can't imagine not working with itCraft. Their professionalism, flexibility and expertise are undeniable. The company helped us with creating the concept of cross-platform iOS and Android from scratch. We've started with 2-days of workshops to establish requirements for the production process. They took care of design and development and now we are finishing the product with additional modules. We definitely recommend working with itCraft!

What is it about the company that you appreciate the most?

First of all, the professional atmosphere. From the beginning, we knew that we and our project are in good hands. itCraft is flexible and swiftly reacts to changing conditions, which we are very much thankful for. Their team consists of various specialists in development, design, and other IT areas. Collaborating with them is not only development but the whole process of creation - from idea to an actual app.

What was it about the company that you didn't like which they should do better?

There is always a place for improvements in every process. They know it, that's why they are constantly working on that. We were able to observe that during the whole development process and our meetings, where itCraft listened carefully to all our suggestions, and together we adjusted and improved all our common processes.

Web Development for Construction Startup

itCraft developed our Webapp to simplify the process for gathering data for a construction project. Following the beginning phase in which they helped us with the outlining of the project and its specification we stareted developing. itCraft was a exceptionally great partner for us because we were no experts and they were always keen in helping us beyond only developing just what we were saying but also giving us input how we could build something better than we first imagined.

itCraft sp. z o.o. Executive Interview

Karol Wegner
Karol Wegner
CEO, itCraft sp. z o.o.
Please introduce your company and give a brief about your role within the company?
My name is Karol and I am CEO and Co-Founder of itCraft - a software house from Poland. We specialize in native mobile app development, but we also build cross-platform and web solutions. Our main goal is to deliver high-quality products to our clients. My role is to take care of general business operations and the company’s growth in the future perspective.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
My friend Bartosz (other Co-Founder of itCraft) and I have been known each other for years. We went to high school and college together and then worked at the same company as developers. After being promoted several times to Tech Leaders and Project Managers, we’ve decided it was time to open our own IT company. With lots of industry experience and almost no business knowledge, we did that in 2010. Our enthusiasm helped us to learn necessary things to run the firm properly and here we are, 10 years later, with more than 65 people on board and many successful projects behind us.
What are your company’s business model–in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We hire an in-house team that we frequently outsource to others. Our offshore development team is available to our clients in many models - staff augmentation, body leasing, and traditional outsourcing.
How is your business model beneficial from a value addition perspective to the clients compared to other companies’ models?
By offering various services with different settlement types, we can help many clients with multiple business needs and goals. Our idea is to deliver robust software to whoever might need it. But not every company needs a whole team - we can lend them a part of our staff to share their competencies and expertise in concrete types of projects. On the other hand, many companies don’t want to hire developers - mostly because they just need to build one app or website and that’s it. They save time and money by outsourcing their IT needs to a company like ours.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
We don’t limit ourselves when it comes to the industry - we’ve been working with healthcare, logistics, wholesale, retail, and many more. As a company that exists for 10 years now, we always wanted to accept new challenges and that’s why we did various projects with global and local brands. I can confidently say that it was the right decision - this way we could gain experience and knowledge from many areas of business, which helped us offer even better services to our current clients.
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
There are so many of them! We always emphasize the fact that we practice an individual approach with each of our clients. So we consider all the factors - their budget, their desired time-to-market, technologies, and the complexity of the whole project. To determine each of those elements, we recommend starting our collaboration with 2-days of UX & UI workshops, where we discuss the details and requirements needed for the expected outcome. Then we can estimate the time frame for each step and the whole process.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front end and back end of a mobile app?
It all depends on the app’s architecture. Sometimes we have to do with applications with most of their business logic on the frontend (mobile) side. Other times, the backend takes control of the user’s data processing. I don’t think there’s a universal rule because it all depends on the system itself.

I would acknowledge another fact here. Whether it’s web or mobile, native or cross-platform, frontend development takes a lot of time. We need to perform multiple tests and refine the user interface, which is responsible for showcasing the quality of the solution and are the main component the users come into contact with. So to build a world-class app with excellent quality is always time-consuming.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
First of all, you should think about your target group - where they are located and what devices do they use. This will help you to find out if you need an app for iOS, Android, or both. Then, we should think about the budget and timeline, as well as the number of features and how advanced they are. Knowing all of this is the key to picking the right technology.
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
As I said, that depends on many factors and there is no right answer - everything depends on the project. For example, when it comes to location - Android is very popular in Poland, but not developing an app for iOS wouldn’t be good for business, as we have a significant group that uses Apple devices. iOS is much more common in the US, so sometimes, making a mobile product for just one system might be justified. Although to achieve the best results, we recommend both.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
Native is our way to go and whenever it’s possible, we recommend choosing it. That’s because it offers much better performance, excellent design, and access to advanced hardware features like camera, GPS, etc. Cross-platform development is suitable for particular cases - we disclose more about that in our newest ebook about these two methodologies of producing software. Both technologies have their success stories. We deny none.

As for iOS or Android, as I mentioned before - it depends on many factors that everyone should think through before starting an IT project.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
Very similar to the factors we consider when determining a timeline for the project. Each time, it’s individual goals, needs, and pains that influence the brief and the guidelines we will follow. It is said that cross-platform technologies are cheaper, but we don’t recommend using that as an argument to lower the costs. Remember that the best way to find out what your budget should be discussing the project with your software house of choice.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions etc.)
We operate with two basic types of contracts: fixed-price and time and materials. We want our clients to get what they pay for and pay for what they get. That means they can pick the type of payment structure they prefer - one is less flexible, but there is a lower risk of constantly growing costs, the other offers flexibility when it comes to budget, timeline, and scope of the project.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement? If no, on what minimum budget you have worked for?
Let’s assume we are talking about creating the whole system and leading the entire production process - from workshops through UX and UI design to implementation and deployment. At itCraft, we charge a minimum of $50 000 or more for projects like that.

If we are talking about developing just one component (e.g., a mobile app only for Android or only for iOS), the budget can start at around $20 000.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2020?
Our current hourly rates range from 42 to 48 EUR, which is approximately 48-54 USD. So that’s how much you will pay for an hour of our specialist’s work - depending on the seniority level.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
That is an interesting question that is undoubtedly hard to answer. The mobile app market divided itself into a couple of monetization models. There are two that I would consider most effective. First is payment intermediation, where the application becomes a middleman for buying products and services. Another one would be a subscription-based model that requires periodical fees for these products or services.

These models are the best because they maintain the cash flow and maximize the fee that the mobile system’s owner receives from the market they operate at. Good examples are Uber and Uber Eats, Netflix, Spotify, and Airbnb. They generate high-profit margins by mediating in product or service purchases.
