We developed an advanced YOLO-based object detection system to enhance the security inspection process by automatically identifying prohibited items such as guns, knives, scissors, and blades within X-ray baggage scans. This model is tailored to tackle the complexities of X-ray images, where items often overlap and cluster, leading to frequent missed detections with traditional inspection methods. By detecting and labeling threat objects with bounding boxes, our system efficiently highlights areas of concern for inspectors, ensuring greater accuracy in real-time. Additionally, by focusing on object detection rather than simple classification, our approach effectively handles the dataset's imbalance between threat and non-threat images, as it treats all regions outside bounding boxes as implicit negatives. This reduces the need for a large, manually labeled dataset, saving on both time and training costs without sacrificing accuracy. Ultimately, our solution boosts the speed, precision, and reliability of security inspections, helping to protect public spaces against potential safety threats.
