I am the founder, CEO, and CTO at Smartym Pro. Now we are a boutique lab that helps our clients bring their ideas to life as a market solution.
What was the idea behind starting this organization?
By the moment I started the company, I had gained a unique knowledge of the enterprise software development process. Therefore, I brought this expertise to startup development to help our clients achieve guaranteed high quality.
What are your company’s business model – in house team or third party vendors/ outsourcing?
We have a team of 50+ professionals, every one of which is a full-time employee. In some particular cases, when our clients require specific expertise, we refer to our proven database of technical consultants and developers.
How is your business model beneficial from a value-added perspective to the clients compared to other companies' models?
We are providing a full-cycle development for our clients, and we are always clear with the efforts and time needed to deliver a solution to the market. We provide everything needed for our clients, starting from early discovery stage and ending with continuous software maintenance after a project has been finished.
What industries do you generally cater to? Are your customers repetitive? If yes, what ratio of clients has been repetitive to you?
As a rule, we don’t limit the range of industries we work with. We have many projects in e-learning, loyalty programs, social platforms, a lot of Blockchain based projects, many projects on business process automation and others. We are proud that our customers are returning to us every time they need development or enhancement of their products. For example, one digital agency has already returned to us for the fifth time. And of course, we are grateful to our clients that advise Smartym Pro to their partners. We appreciate the positive feedback from our clients and partners very much!
Mention the objectives or the parameters critical in determining the time frame of developing a mobile app.
Our experience taught us that each project differs from what Agile or Waterfall methodology in classic understanding is. Therefore, we recommend our partners to stick to the following proportion: plan the Discovery stage to be done in 1 month and limit the first development cycle to 3-4 month. This timeframe is always enough to deliver the key functionality and rapid go-to-market strategy. But of course, everything hugely depends on the project’s scale, the difficulty of the technologies that will be used, clients’ limitations and the industry's nuances.
How much effort in terms of time goes into developing the front-end and back-end of a mobile app?
As it was stated earlier, we are doing all application elements in-house. Therefore, we are able to parallel the tasks and achieve the first release of the product in 3-4 months. But there is no such thing as standard project duration: in some cases, there are projects that require years of development - including constant functionality enhancements, improvements, and maintenance.
What are the key parameters to be considered before selecting the right platform for a mobile application?
According to the statistics, the most frequently used worldwide platform is Android. However, firstly, it is very important to take into consideration the target audience preferences. For instance, one of our projects was specifically targeted on small retail that uses iPads integrated into the shelves. For that reason, we were asked to make only iOS application tailored to iPad’s screen resolution.
Which platform do you suggest your clients to begin with when they approach you with an idea (Android or iOS) and why?
Of course, if the idea is to reach the maximum audience possible, we recommend doing two native mobile applications for both iOS and Android platforms. In case the budget is limited, or the target audience is narrowly specified, the best idea for a soft launch is to concentrate on the iOS application since the iOS users are more solvent.
Android or iOS, Native or Hybrid — which platform is best to use to build your app? What are your recommendations?
We strongly discourage our customers from developing a Hybrid mobile app. In the majority of cases, especially when it comes to long-term projects with big perspectives, Hybrid apps make it a lot more difficult for the developers to implement any changes due to numerous Hybrid development limitations, and it is more expensive to maintain. This being said, we recommend our clients to stick to Native development, such a decision will cut down the number of risks and unplanned additional costs to zero.
What are the key factors that you consider before deciding the cost of a mobile application?
Generally speaking, app development price is a multiplication of hours needed and the hourly rate. However, it is common knowledge that the final cost of the app consists of several components: labor efforts of the team needed to develop the app, the pricing model, our Service Level Agreement terms, the complexity of development, risks, costs of additional materials, etc.
What kind of payment structure do you follow to bill your clients? Is it Pay per Feature, Fixed Cost, Pay per Milestone (could be in phases, months, versions, etc.)
One of our key advantages is the agility in work with the client. We have worked with all the mentioned payment schemes, and we are ready to cooperate on any negotiated terms. The pricing model we use for a particular project depends on the client’s preferences and limitations.
Do you take in projects which meet your basic budget requirement? If yes, what is the minimum requirement?
We have no prejudices or minimal requirements when considering a project. We are very keen on our customers’ needs first. We negotiate and together decide on the best budget/functional set proportion with maximum benefits for both sides. Important is the idea and the amount of unique experience and expertise we can get from a project, and not the budget. The more experienced we are - the more possibilities we can offer to our potential customers.
What is the price range (min and max) of the projects that you catered to in 2018?
It happened that all the projects we got in 2018 were more or less in the same pricing segments since the majority of projects we have been working on from 2018 are long-term with subsequent conclusion of maintenance contracts.
Which business model do you suggest to your clients enabling them to generate revenue from mobile applications? Why?
Establishing a mobile app business model is essential, and if implemented properly, can allow your startup to hit the top. There is no one business model that we suggest to every client since this matter is extremely individual. Every project requires a thorough analysis of customer’s goals, criteria of acceptance, his needs, expectations, target audience and many other aspects. The decision on which business model to implement in a particular situation is being held during meetings and master-classes with customers and our business development officers.

We started to work with Smartym Pro from outstaffing of just 2 front-end developers. The team showed really high performance and as a result, the delivery of Web part was completely delegated to Smartym Pro, as well as the development of mobile apps. Also, we started the development of a complex project, which consisted of three parts:
