Challenge

In this R&D project, we wanted to exercise our IoT and ML expertise by developing a road stress detection system. The idea was to use IoT and ML to detect parts of the road network that cause the most stress for drivers, and use the solution’s architecture as a blueprint for future healthcare projects.

Solution

We assembled a small focus group of drivers, who also happened to be our colleagues. To measure stress levels, we equipped drivers with wristband heart-rate monitors, which are connected to a smartphone app via Bluetooth. Smartphones continuously collect data from heart-rate monitors and send it to the server via a Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP).

After reaching the MongoDB database, an ML model processes this data to detect sudden jumps in heart rate. To ensure that the system can scale on-demand for bigger projects and can efficiently process large amounts of data incoming from thousands of sensors, we used Apache Kafka.

By aligning heart rate deviations with GPS data, it becomes possible to detect which exact parts of the route cause the most stress for drivers. To visualize heart rate data and stress zones we built a web-based application.

Result

We built an MVP of a healthcare patient monitoring system, which we tested as a road stress detection platform. With an inadequately small sample size, we found out that drivers were stressing the most on a difficult intersection, and, quite amusingly, near office and home. The architecture of this IoT-based solution can serve as a blueprint for future healthcare systems that require remote patient monitoring at scale.

Challenge

The customer, a US-based startup, wanted to develop a one-stop solution for healthcare practitioners to streamline lab test ordering. Given that lab tests contain highly-sensitive patient data, such a solution requires compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, and HL7 standards.

Solution

Here is how a system works from a clinician’s perspective: 

• After login, a clinician can see critical patient data including medical history and what medications a patient takes
• A clinician logins into the portal and sees tests available for order from multiple providers
• After ordering a test or a set of tests, the request is confirmed by both patient and doctor using e-signatures
• The system automatically confirms if a patient is eligible for requested services with an insurance company
• Respective laboratories receive test requests following HL7’s standards around data exchange

Result

We delivered a comprehensive regulatory-compliant system that streamlines lab test ordering for clinicians and optimizes request processing for laboratories. Clinicians no longer need to fill a different test request for each laboratory and have access to a broader range of lab testing services. The service enables smaller labs to become more competitive as they get significantly more exposure.

The customer, an independent software vendor, wanted to create a platform that consolidates all the patient data in one place to streamline communication between healthcare professionals, ease access to patients’ health data, reduce the amount of paperwork, and decrease the time it takes to solve patients’ cases.

Solution

Virtual Nomad's team developed a cross-platform web app that allows healthcare professionals to quickly find patients' data including diagnosis, demographical information, medical tests, and treatment history in a unified platform.
The main features:

• Unified database for electronic health records that can be integrated with third-party medical data archives.

Result

Our team delivered a fully-fledged healthcare document management system that allows multiple healthcare organizations to effectively store, share, modify, and track patients’ data. Healthcare institutions that use our solution report increased efficiency and faster decision making, improved communication and collaboration between healthcare professionals, and decreased operational costs.

Challenge

Our client, a US-based healthcare startup, decided to develop a virtual care solution from scratch.

Solution

Virtual Nomad delivered a full-fledged HIPAA-compliant virtual care solution that allows patients to receive medical care from the convenience of their homes.

Using the patient portal, patients can book a virtual appointment, fill in a clinical questionnaire, pay for a service, and access prescriptions. Using a clinician portal, healthcare professionals can access patient data, check appointment schedules, and communicate with patients via text and video chat.

The solution can be seamlessly integrated with third-party providers to allow patients to purchase and receive prescriptions without leaving the platform. Clinicians can order lab tests and follow up on patients once results are obtained.

The platform supports HL7 and FHIR data standards, which not only ensures regulatory compliance and secure exchange of sensitive data but also allows for integration with other HL7-compliant services in the future.

Result

The developed solution allows patients to receive fully remote care. Clinicians can save time and resources without compromising care quality. Digitization of document flows and patient journeys enable faster resolution of patient cases and improved efficiency of daily clinical workflows.

Challenge

The customer, a global leader in medical data informatics, is building a digital platform that allows pharmaceutical and healthcare companies to find more suitable patients in a shorter time frame.
The idea behind the project is to allow medical professionals to access different hospital databases in a unified platform and make the recruitment process more efficient. Given that the patient recruitment system scans hospital databases that are located in diverse geographies and have different structures, it was critical to ensure system interoperability and compliance with region-specific standards like HIPAA and GDPR.

Solution

Virtual Nomad quickly assembled a team of experts that supported the Clinerion team's development of the UI layer and assisted in the creation of a comprehensive search engine. The platform allows retrieving data from multiple healthcare institutions across different countries, which significantly decreases the time it takes to identify the most suitable patients for clinical trials.
Our dedicated QA team continuously performs manual, automated, pre-production, and production testing. We are also responsible for system security, compliance with OWASP, and the data security technology for patient data anonymization. We also used our expertise to support the back-end development of the system modules using Java technologies like Entity Manager and Report Manager.

Result

The solution is now widely used across healthcare companies based in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. As reported by our customer, compared to the conventional approach to clinical trial patient recruitment, this solution allows companies to find up to 30 times more patients per case. Importantly, the whole process now takes minutes instead of weeks or months. The system operates in real-time, 24/7.
